-- a -- leading a psychiatrist also that contributor for Fox News said doctor Keith tableau is with us here in studio right now to talk about a whole host of different topics but it's always good to have you on doctor Keith and good morning.
These tornadoes is one place he wanted to start and Diane -- and I were talking about this earlier how.
Just -- hard hit this area of the country has been and you look at a place like Joplin that's just been completely wiped out -- -- one of the time we had -- talking but I believe the earthquake in Japan but you start to say.
How do people psychologically pick up the -- -- and start to bounce back from an event like that.
Wolf first of all I think you have to acknowledge just how traumatic it is so the people who would say look just you know kind of try to get over this right are gonna fall on deaf -- -- you have to acknowledge that you can't quite.
Feel what they're feeling at this time and then what I try to do with people is to say listen.
-- life story isn't ending here.
Thank god so in retrospect think about your story developing the chapters yet to come the way that you respond now.
Giving your grief give in -- few years.
Your opportunities show courage and grace under pressure that's what will be written into your story going forward so as hard as it is.
Try to find the opportunity.
In these dark times to distinguish yourself to love the people around you.
And to thereby right incredible chapters in your life story candidate almost be for some of these people -- new beginning -- strange as that sounds sewers are going too far nobody can it can be because you know what.
A lot of people live in sort of houses of cards of one kind or another.
And moments like this is when you realize -- when you realize.
What really matters.
Listen my life my family matters my friends and neighbors matter and those are the things they're gonna define me going forward and it's a lesson that those folks may never forget and many of us may never learn.
-- -- -- -- -- I was I was wondering if if it helps to tell people stories of other people who have been in similar situations.
And have managed to overcome that or is that.
Kind of frustrating to know exactly like to join my practice and tell your -- I did the right out on Imus in the morning and if it doesn't work out here I've get a chair in a country they're gone no because I often say to people listen you're not gonna believe me.
But twelve months from now you're gonna be back in my office looking back saying I can't believe the distance I've traveled.
And so yes.
Forecasting for people clearer skies literally and figuratively -- very helpful.
That is interest -- -- tableau is with us here on the the Imus in the morning program now you do -- -- -- -- your Fox News contributor and you wrote a blog here few weeks back for fox a and I'm still a contributor even after the book.
After that blog which -- -- One of this X axis somebody is a guest on this program not that long ago with Imus is Chaz Bono.
Who loses a child -- -- share and it now is going through this as I -- transition.
From being Chastity Bono to Chaz Bono but anyway you wrote a blog posting about that that elicited a lot of response tell me about.
A storm of another kind it was it was elicited because look here's what I said.
Before we start celebrating.
What a sign of incredible.
Self esteem it is to change one's gender I don't really behind -- Because listen here's what I was taught in med school and in psychiatry residency if you have a fixed and false belief.
In other words you have the genetics and body of a woman.
But you believe you have the conviction on mail right it's a sense we always -- here called the delusion right as we always hear people -- while always here.
But we hear people saying their quote unquote.
And and I never understood -- I yeah I'm but again I always assumed that you know you just don't understand these things much you're going through them or whatever the case -- but you hear people say all your -- trapped in this body or use.
Phrases like that they have but look psychiatry is so effective at getting to the bottom of stories the roots of it okay you feel trapped right in your body.
In what other ways -- you felt trapped in your life what other inescapable situations have you felt frustrated in.
Get to the understanding part before you grab a scalpel.
Shouldn't there be a whole bunch of arrows in your quiver of arrows that you wanna -- first rather than celebrating this and saying yeah I think we should all.
Consider are we locked in the wrong body.
You know we've got -- Toronto couple now -- -- isn't announcing the gender they're not announcing the gender their child that is the child encumbered.
By social convention.
Yeah they're basically they have other kids did you hear about this story this is I did there that though -- only three people that know the sex of the baby and not telling anybody babies named storm appropriately.
So they have these other kids said no -- -- -- enough -- met male female but -- I think they're a little bit of both of the boy and a girl whatever the case to be older children now they have this other baby.
And suddenly they don't want to name the gender of the baby you're saying -- And I'm saying that's crazy I mean doesn't take a psychiatrist to tell you that -- -- -- but I think that that's damaging to that child.
And that if we can at least agree on whether people are male or female.
Then what can we rely on it has to truth in our culture -- -- back to Chaz Bono thing for again so you were you write this blog posting.
Which essentially says that it's Biden.
Yeah that would what Chaz Bono is going through is I don't know if you if you're -- is not legitimate but.
They -- the son of psychosis rather than a -- of good health and the response to that is why.
Well some support and vigorous opposition because.
There are many many groups and many folks out there now who believe that these things are fluid that one should be able to declare oneself anything.
And that that should float with the rest of us will listen.
I'm not going to encumbered -- -- I'm not gonna force anybody into any kind of treatment they don't want right if that's the treatment the Chaz Bono wants.
Fine I guess but the bottom line is I'm not going to applaud and see why what a great thing -- -- a tragic thing.
It's very sad and that the fact that it had to come to surgery.
Even sadder because you know what I'm not convinced that there wasn't something different that could have been done so chancellor Gordon the other options that people should look at before the area but generally try to change that -- -- which seems to be well you'd certainly want to try to be comfortable on the gender with which you were born again.
I know I'm gonna get a fire storm again of feedback but you know want.
There are medicines.
That are designed for people who have fixed and false beliefs fixed and false belief delusions.
Even in anti psychotic medicine shouldn't you try it first for a period of time before you go see the surgeon I'd say yes.
Some of my colleagues might disagree and much of the American public might disagree but listen this is a time when fiction.
Is substituting for fact in the economy in politics.
And in medicine so in the bottom line is I I like the fact.
Part would you be more supportive if -- had tried these other methods first before resorting to.
You know going through and an identity change basically.
I would be look at I'd be supportive to relieve his.
Suffering and I -- his in quotes his suffering regardless.
But the bottom line is.
That this standing ovation business where we say no no no everybody listen -- in now -- star -- incorporate this in language people are saying.
Advocating saying.
What gender were you born.
Which and a review board not what gender are you -- should be obvious from looking at you but what were you born as 'cause what have you selected.
Now not up to -- -- believing I'm telling you it's a slippery slope if you cannot believe the body with which you were born you can't rely on anything and we're lost wireless that -- -- -- an interest in conversation if we get her.
Hate mail while still being digest thanks always come back and meet sincere thank you yacht -- if you deceit -- to -- -- on our thanks to -- fox the.
