-- we're back here live on what is a very active -- for the for the New York Mercantile Exchange here.
-- this morning talking about energy prices crude oil still hovered around a hundred dollars.
A barrel -- people talking about gasoline prices all of come down a little bit is still up there as we get ready for the Memorial Day a weekend of the summer driving season.
People are still asking is now the time you wanna go electric are you interested in -- electric vehicle.
Well the Obama administration's making -- -- on electric announcing plans to buy more than 100 Chevy volts and Jennifer grand home -- former governor of Michigan she's now with a few charitable.
Trust -- she's a senior advisor joins us from East Lansing what do make of this move by the Obama administration governor.
I think it's great it's great leadership and once thousand volts are those electric vehicles get out on the street and people -- -- And -- -- there really substantial vehicles or not.
Tin can vehicles and that you can go somewhere in pain.
Two to three cents a mile rather than the fourteen cents a mile that you pay now by filling up your tank.
I just I really think this is going to take off so easy it's so cheap and really well made.
Well you're right the cars look good -- the issue for video and I guess for a lot of other people with electric has always been about infrastructure.
And part of the administration announcement today was installing a hundred car charging stations in five cities just look you gotta see with the -- -- DC Detroit.
Los Angeles San Diego and San Francisco but I remember.
Last year I was in China talking.
Some of the auto executives there they were saying boy if the Chinese decided tomorrow to put the infrastructure in place they would do it the government would lead the way and that might.
Lead to electric cars taking off but mobile oversee it to that while they are gonna get.
And O'Connell since.
Yet since then the Chinese have announced that they have 25 cities that they're installing the infrastructure for.
But the greatest thing about electric vehicles -- you know is that the infrastructure really is already in place in much of America which is.
They just plug it in overnight in your home in your garage for most people who have garage is an access still plug.
You know you charge it overnight so it's not that much of a step up in terms of infrastructure would it be nice to have more of those stations all over and available sure and that's happening.
But the great thing about the electric vehicle is that you don't have to invest that much and infrastructure.
Well the thing is governor you know there's a gas prices are as high as they are now are higher maybe there will be more demand for for alternatives I found it interesting that -- poll that came out pew research poll on why gas prices are as high as they are the top edge of 31%.
Greed the oil companies and speculation.
Which is -- dirty words of these traders on the floor down here but what do you make of that.
Well I you know I mean people know that they're paying more at the pump and they know that oil companies have are -- record profits and so they're connecting the two.
And and I'm sure that there is some aspect of that happening but we also know that oil prices are based on -- global market and it's not as though they gas station owner at the corner is is able to control that.
But I do think the best way to be able to bring down the price of gas or at least the price on your wallet with every.
Family spends about 2000 dollars a year on gasoline is to make cars go further on either take -- gas through more fuel efficiency.
Or having the plug in their cars and go electric and by the way panel.
This creates its -- in America.
You know that that China as you were there and Korea are investing billions of dollars in making the electric vehicle and especially the battery for that electric vehicle.
The rest of the Obama administration's that Recovery Act they also invested in Michigan we have now eighteen companies that are.
Making the electric vehicle battery which is a -- in new ecosystem and new.
Supply chain for a new industry which is great job six and you know thousand jobs being created and that in Michigan alone.
And I was gonna say you know better than anybody that that's states the needs that helped governor grand -- thank you very much it's good to see you again.
Thanks for coming on great runner -- thanks -- what -- landed it.
