We'll -- you've got a great idea for -- innovative product but don't of the first thing about getting it made.
-- pay close attention because my next guest knows exactly how to get started Tory Johnson.
Is the CEO of women for hire and founder of sparking -- dot com OK so let's get started because people asked me about this I have no idea how to answer.
You -- create a prototype.
That's the very first thing and that is to take what's up here and sort of make something of it and this could be as simple as sketching out your designs the I deal thing you -- -- do is actually formed something that looks pretty close to whatever this acted.
And it doesn't.
Have to be and probably won't be in the same material as what your final vision is going to be so one great example that I love there's a woman who is on shark tank her product is even the elephants and it is a a medicine dropper for kids that talks and it looks like an elephant trunk there isn't.
It's -- plastic device you when she -- this thing she couldn't describe it nobody understood it says she made one out of grape cool day just at a cool day and that enabled her to -- exactly what she wanted to look like she went on shark tank with her claim model she got her funding.
And we'll ask it now in retailers all over the country and it's really intuitive.
Absolutely absolutely so the first thing you wanna do is try to create this thing to that if you're talking to manufacturer ordered up faster as you can actually shell it as opposed to describing it.
Are they say researching anything out -- that might be similar yeah I know what the competition you want.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Leather wallets little handbags.
What were other things made of what -- -- look like what kind of fasteners and and sort of -- -- And that's ultimately helped her to have her apartment to look for cues -- -- based on other stuff that exists rip up the best idea -- is gonna stop you addicts and throughput and ray groups do for me when I'm trying to get that product out the -- trade groups he can save you from all the -- in the learning curve so there's a trade group that almost every single industry look at those trade groups looking at specific associations there's small business development centers.
All across the country they can help connect you with.
Manufacturers that have strong reputations in specifically.
In the product category that you are looking -- so they may be able to say you know we know someone -- -- really great experience with this manufacturer or we know this particular person that you should talk to my advice so much it might as opposed to sort of assuming that just one book or one resource and in the -- like -- so much stuff they can be overwhelming.
Go straight to a specific source you think cold call other small business and they aren't -- is gonna tell me yeah and you ever nation -- -- competing so you're not call someone who insanity let's and I plan on ripping off the same product that you make.
But again that example of Wendy with her card -- she called women who are small business owners who manufactured handbags she studied their handbags she then called them up instead I have been a long admirer of you and your business that -- created.
I'm interested in creating a small leather products it doesn't compete with -- said it right off the bat -- wondering if you might be able to share some you know tales from the trenches -- -- good advice and almost always a small business owner is so proud that they have manufacture this product that yes they're willing to it to share all of the war stories so you can avoid that and also the best practices to travesty you -- in the right direction to.
Don't be afraid to pick up the phone calls on make sure you've done your research and you know what their product is you know a little bit about them so it's.
Get a little flatter -- -- -- sold out Larry they get buried there at Barry.
Fareed so one of the questions we -- -- -- this with was.
Big question and there's no easy answers to there's a lot of considerations.
If you -- -- mass produce something large run you might wanna look at China.
However because it's going to be difficult to get someone in China to do a small -- that this is a small boutique he kind of exclusive product.
That might not be the place that you got.
How there's also other considerations regardless of the quantities -- you're looking to manufacture.
It -- made in the USA is a point of pride.
For your branding for the authenticity of what -- that you're trying to create and so you that means a lot to a lot of consumer and a lot of consumers who don't just -- -- to get the cheapest price I've got to go to China because there's a cost associated with doing that so I -- say don't just missed the manufacturers right here in this country.
Well often love to have your business at least give them a chance to bid on your business and recognize that when things are overseas.
They take longer you're gonna pay more for shipping -- -- to building your time for things to come by see if not you're gonna.
Prepare to pay big bucks to air -- your stuff so.
Language barriers -- -- a lot of considerations when you're dealing with the but sometimes that's the fact of the matter is like made in the USA you you can you can say that proudly and you can still sell at a low price that don't dismiss.
The American and I -- here I love that answer.
A separate and all this time yes I'm developing this fantastic product that I'm really really proud up but I don't want anybody else to steal what happens is that so here's the thing I don't tell people worry less about somebody stealing your idea worry more about people listening to what it is that you wanna do and a lot of times -- will -- -- this amazing idea but I can't tell you what is.
I I Wilson are gonna go -- and manufacture your product idea.
Then the next guy and so a lot of friends we've got -- like give up information to be able to get our stuff out there to be able to get really strong advice and get really great resource is people say that I have to patented first I've got to take market first.
Those things might be valuable to you I would suggest that you talked to a lawyer first get a free consultation because the reality is a patent trademark those things are only as good as your willingness and your ability to defend it so there -- a lot of people with great products who have a patent on it but -- some of those emits a mop.
It doesn't -- that's just coming in to you can't you can't its patented got to take them to court and you got to be prepared to spend a lot of money to fight them so that patent.
Only protects you.
Based in your willingness to defend it but but in some cases -- -- want that patent for short and you've got to be able to talk to an attorney to say here's my product category.
Here's potential -- investors here's my distribution do I need to go through the patent process and someone who's an expert at that we'll tell you.
Yes -- now but for a lot of people you be worried about something you don't need to worry about a lie about the little guy just do I -- would worry about just skidded out there.
General -- Arab touring great information thanks so much for healthy.
