Vice president Joseph Biden stepping back into the budget battle today meeting with congressional leaders to hammer out a compromise.
This is the debt ceiling is getting closer and closer for more I'm joined by Republican senator Roy Blunt of Missouri.
Senator great to see you.
Good to see you -- Thanks for stopping by a lot of stuff they ask you about starting with the budget.
It seems like there are more versions of the budget than there are of the Bible.
Which one is gonna win out and do you have any confidence that we will.
Come together over some kind of budget that everybody can agree too soon.
You know my guess is there won't be an agreed to budget this year I think -- -- house budget maybe I don't even know that there -- -- -- senate budget.
You don't have to have a budget I think that's why so many people are looking at.
Debt ceiling debate as the debate that -- -- structure and spending generally what's our target.
To get from where we are to where we need to be we just simply can't continue to do.
What we're doing now and think the American people -- generally figure that out so there's.
There's willingness for the congress -- -- that congress just needs to figure out how to act with the president to get this spending under control.
-- you said that congress has to figure out how to act that's for sure.
How would you respond to something Paul Ryan's dad about the debate on this bill that's going on line this is Paul Ryan.
We -- under no delusion that we're gonna get everything we've always wanted in this one bill but let's get a good down payment.
And let's get this this this spending situation in the right directions.
So senator you get the impression that side there is some willing to bend hear some willingness to -- You know in the conversation keep going on behind closed doors the American people of course are locked out -- can't see inside any of that.
Is your progress being made or not.
Well I hope so I think.
Actually I do think I'll say it again I think the debt ceiling debate that everybody realizes.
To moving forward one way or another provides the the requirement that we get something that people can agree on you know the president's early view was.
We have to pass this debt ceiling so.
It needs to happen without any other discussion going on and all I think the other view that is if we have to pass the debt ceiling Mr.
President you think it's.
That critical you're going to have to give some to get that done and right I think Paul Ryan and others are signaling.
-- were looking for a way forward here that moves dramatically in the right direction but at least moves in the right direction.
Well -- and I guess we'll see if that comes to pass of course now we're talking about not doing anything about entitlement spending putting that on the back burner for awhile.
That's really seems like missing a great opportunity there seem to be a lot of consensus that something needed to be -- specifically about Social Security Medicare and Medicaid.
Are we losing an opportunity here.
Well Social Security Medicare and Medicaid spent almost all of the money that came into the federal government this year the entitlements.
Generally spent a 101%.
Of the money that came in.
-- so sure we need to deal with them you're not gonna begin to get this problem under control until you deal with them.
I think there'd be a lot of credit for the president -- lead on any one of those three.
In this year to to secure the future of Social Security to make Medicare Medicaid work better.
I think he'd get huge credit for that because it has to happen for us to really solve the problem you cannot solve this problem.
Unless you deal with those three things in a more innovative.
And thoughtful way.
Well and leadership is the issue right now I -- you got that right right you sit on the Senate Intelligence Committee -- I had I have to ask you big debate this week.
Over whether the pictures of bin Laden should be made public to put to rest fears that.
Maybe it wasn't him maybe he didn't die -- should they be made public in your BM.
You know I think anybody who doesn't believe the government's report on the DNA anybody who doesn't believe the on site -- -- not gonna believe the pictures so I'm.
I'm prepared to trust the president on this -- thinks they shouldn't be that they would cause more problems.
Than they're worth I suspect that might be the case are plenty of other things to argue about.
You know the -- still alive let him show up somewhere with a newspaper with the day's newspaper.
And prove it I think the mission was accomplished it was an important mission to be accomplished I'm looking forward frankly to all the other information.
That the seal team was able to take out of there and I hope that there's lots of concern and disruption and wringing of hands right now and al-Qaeda.
Because just like we don't know yet what's on there they don't know what's on there either end the difference is we will eventually know.
They'll never know what we're finding out from the information that Osama bin Laden had with him.
Well and we will be following that story for weeks and months to come right and appreciate your stopping by senator blunt thanks for your time today you've been.
