Decide that those last week's budget agreement meantime averted a government shutdown and included almost forty billion dollars in budget cuts but.
Its interest because there is one controversial program that did not get cut.
It was restored money actually being put back and for school vouchers and Washington DC.
Joseph -- is now executive at our parent company news more.
And he's the former New York city's schools chancellor -- great to see you first and foremost next.
Is this a good thing.
I think it is a good thing I mean I'm familiar with these sea island -- many years it's a school system that really isn't working he had a whole bunch of kids who were there -- Really challenge for environments.
And who get the chance to go to some very good schools and so I'm glad that the Democrats and Republicans came together and restored this month the month the argument against vouchers has always been that it take they take money away from the public schools which I'm sure you.
Or heard that argument many times when -- running to New York City public schools.
What do you make of that.
-- -- It's gonna cost you whether you educate that she -- public schools or if they go to a private school.
And so it's not a question taking money effective per pupil cost of this program.
It's really quite of it's far.
And what you find is if a kid gets into more expensive school they get scholarships and other things so I don't think it's a cost issue I think it's a political issue.
And we wanna do it and union -- -- -- Yeah of course Tatum because today like everyone to go to the public schools -- the system that they control and that are one and exposes maybe the poor education that kids might again.
That that too.
But I mean we got to worry about these kids I mean what did these kids in DC and think about you know how many people in the house and in the senate send their children to -- -- private schools.
So it's not enough for decades what it's not good enough for some kids who growing up and out of costume and northeast -- DC.
-- we wanted to talk a little bit while you're here about your old job McAfee black resigning as the new York city schools chancellor after only a few months.
Now we just understanding Dennis -- -- there's a deputy -- been -- got the waiver he'll take over for her.
What do you make of that with Mayor Bloomberg.
Basically that he was wrong -- actually the two of them and inclusion and hadn't been working and you know that's the case you've got to.
Make the change that may have stepped up and made it and I think Dennis is a terrific terrific upon me I work with him.
-- and a half years -- -- my last call at my my first call on morning.
Was with Dennis walk -- Stephanie -- executed grew up in Queens went on a public schools.
Knows everybody and has a real passion and commitment -- public education so I think it was a good move in and I'm glad that -- Dennis took this on and I think we can expect terrific thing for.
And that -- interviewed mayor Cory Booker of Newark, New Jersey yesterday do you think somebody like him can make a difference in that city schools because again.
You news become outraged anytime you talk about change and teacher -- -- they're getting money from FaceBook in the -- outraged about private money coming into that school system.
I do you think -- can make a difference going to be tough but they let's be honest and neat if we -- warning about the union's issues.
Which is really to protect.
Ten year and to make sure -- be big post employment benefits and all those issues instead -- about the kids issues the north is gonna continue to get the failure.
That it's gotten in public education of people in that city ought to be outraged that the fact that their kids are not getting educated at the level they need and I really commend Corey Booker for stepping up.
And taking a leadership and to get additional monies from the private sector to help support.
That to bring better programs.
All looks to me to be good stuff to help the kids in north and nobody can defend the current system in Newark right now it's a jobs program it's not a system for the kids Joseph -- always good to see a comebacks and great look forward to the hunted down here in the building yeah -- there yeah.
