-- no doubt heard the employee free choice act some people call -- card check that is legislation that would kill the secret ballot for union elections.
One -- supporters of this bill is congressman Phil -- of Illinois and he joins us now congressman thank you very much for joining us.
Arnold has no public support and very little union support for this why are you supporting it.
-- union support for the employee free choice act yes according to the Zogby poll there as 76% of union members.
And if you're not -- rank and file do not once secret ballot.
I pay very little attention Zogby poll agitated people in my district and around the country the Gallup poll shows that about 5354%.
Of people support the bill.
Look the bottom line here is this this is about a level playing field for working men and women it's about giving them the opportunity.
To sign a card and join a collective bargaining unit.
And then if they can't reach an agreement which some of these once they do if you're lucky -- to get.
You recognize him to get to two years so.
You know I would question mr.
Zogby -- -- -- usually way off the mark.
Anyway I relocate what Scott Rasmussen of Rasmussen Reports Susan who's polling he's generally right on and just polled Americans only 9%.
Say they would -- -- join a union.
That's the -- incredible mind me I'm -- 61% of people.
-- 61% of Americans would want to join a union or 60% of union workers would want the employee free choice act.
More than 61% of workers we're of -- -- units would want it you have somebody represent what.
We understand what's at stake in the selection in this whole nonsense about.
Into the secret ballot the current law says -- 30% of employees wanna secret ballot election there -- entitled to what the current -- what the employee free choice act does.
If 30% of the people that sign.
The -- say we want to secret election they get the secret election I think this is.
Once again you know it's -- propaganda by the by the right they're all scared to death somehow ordinary people are gonna have somebody to go to -- bargain warm for you don't think there are really important -- -- workplace safety.
Bereavement pay pension programs health care.
Those kind all of which would all of which are noble causes but we've we've we've heard analyst reports on Wal-Mart that if this passes.
And Wal-Mart unionize -- prices will go up for everybody FedEx yesterday saying.
It's gonna delay the purchase of thirty planes mostly built by American workers.
Because they're afraid this will pass that.
Well with all due respect you can -- looking at a parcel service of supports this Harley-Davidson supports -- the number of corporations throughout this country.
Support the opportunity for people to sign a card look.
And an as far as Wal-Mart -- this is the corporation who doesn't know how to figure out what a real forty hour week yes.
There health care of their employees is spotty at best that'd be scared to death that they're gonna unionize because quite frankly they need to be so you know I don't really terrible Wal-Mart things -- throwing.
Your leader Harry didn't listen and to be honest -- -- I don't either.
But a lot of people rely on wal mart's prices being -- a lot of struggling American people a lot of people that are your constituents.
And -- -- -- you cannot.
I mean we all know if it if Wal-Mart unionize as their prices will soar.
Which damages how -- we -- know how do we know that because wal -- and so does that make -- -- -- rather labor.
Costs go up which -- the biggest part of any balance sheet on any corporation anywhere in the world.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- Well Unita Parcells doing very very well -- -- doing very very well Harley-Davidson's doing very well thought the bottom line here is like.
This is typical of businesses that are just scared to death that somehow employees are going to be able to determine their own destiny.
If the price is a Wal-Mart go up.
You're gonna blame that on people wanting to negotiate for health care you're gonna blame them people wanted them.
I'm I'm not I'm simply saying -- no there aren't I think that it could -- and I agree media that we need better pay out there and American average people to shop locally forever.
But what I'm saying that there are in unintended consequences are they're not well look I -- I rolled the dice on this here here's what -- roll the -- on how to roll the dice on people that want a union.
First of all you have to want the union to sign the cardinal presented -- force them to sign the card.
I would just tell you if you could you certify a union by society 50% plus one.
What's the big deal about being able to -- union -- With 50% plus one -- -- 30% of the people want a union election secret ballot they get the secret ballot -- -- look.
Everybody is so absolutely -- commerce is this is Armageddon Armageddon.
We're giving away billions of dollars debates with no strings attached with ordinary people.
Have never been Wal-Mart might have a few higher prices because they -- actually gonna treat their employees.
With the kind of respect and health care and forty hour work week and over time.
They know almost basic fundamental -- so look.
You know if it's good enough for the CEO's these preparation.
-- -- I got that I think got an old argument congressman I didn't I don't think my -- down an old argument Cuban let me tell you may be an old argument -- -- -- the correct argument.
I've organized I've been there done that.
It's no secret that but that for what George Bush reinstated 30000 people George W.
Who was no friend of labor.
For people who were summarily fired because they wanted to have a a labor union in -- in their shots to represent them to look the bottom line here is -- If people don't want the union they don't have to sign the card they want the union -- sign the card.
If 30% want union election to get shot shouldn't -- if they can't reach an agreement -- it did it really kind of the go to binding arbitration.
Why can't they do -- another secret ballot what I mean what addition we also -- -- that when you vote in any election you have to come out of the pole with a sign that says who you voted for it and -- but let me put it -- -- -- I would tell you what I told my Republican colleagues.
If they want to talk about a fair election what if I had unlimited access to voter registration rolls.
And unlimited access to talk to voters individually for however long I wanted to and my opponent.
Had a grand total of two weeks it can only speak to them either over the phone.
We're trying to knock your doors if you consider that a fair congressional election the answer is now currently that's the way it is union organizers can't -- on company property.
They have to talk to the workers at home yet the -- to bring people went for 23 hours at a time with that testimony that they've done that.
And they're gonna tell them the evils and of the of the union -- it comes -- and we're gonna have to shut the plant down through intimidation.
Look this is all about being -- and that's that's what we're talking about on this bill with anybody really in their heart of hearts believes.
There's somehow the enactment of this piece of legislation is not gonna help the middle class but I'm not an economist -- I I worked in factory.
And I know what NC labor conditions are all about I know what it's like people don't have the right to file -- -- and -- it seems to me.
That if it's good enough for the people that make the most got to be good now.
For people I'd better and I listen I won't agree disagreed on that congressman but I can do is tell -- this as a business journalists I've spoken over twenty companies privately.
All of them have told me that they will lay people off.
If because they'll pay there workers more they'll get better benefits which is great for the people who'll keep their jobs for the people of all lay people off to the people have a job will be better.
But we'll have more unemployed.
All of those this I talked to I've talked to hundreds of -- -- needs of my congressional district.
And I looked at me they couldn't disagree more look at into the day -- get more money people make the more they're gonna spend -- -- stores.
If they have a job congressman -- -- -- -- like it's a battle through it happened thank you very much for joining us one we're gonna win too.
