Three years ago this month and British prime minister Tony Blair left ten Downing Street took on a new role.
Special envoy for the Middle East.
The request the United Nations the US and the EU he was asked to improve economic conditions in the west bank and Gaza but also.
Help the Palestinians and Israel move towards a two state solution.
Is that -- still possible.
Joining me now live from Jerusalem for an exclusive interview with Fox Business former British prime minister Tony Blair mr.
Blair welcome -- -- this answer.
Now you just spent the day at the Palestinian investment conference -- what her goals for this conference was to.
Reduce waiting time at checkpoints make it easier for tourists to see Bethlehem for example but given the Israeli -- on the flotilla over the weekend.
Are you all discouraged by what has happened there.
-- it's a terrible incidents that happened and obviously costs shadow over the conference and over the peace process.
On the other hand what is extremely important is that.
We treat this Palestinian investment conference what it is -- seven -- stay in the river a thousand people from hole.
Different parts of the world we announced a major programs.
And both all in housing.
Actually the West Bank economy not Gaza but the West Bank economy is growing by a body and a half percent unemployment coming down the deficits coming down.
The -- access and movement restrictions being lifted we've still got a long way to go on the west bank and Gaza raids.
As difficult as we know but the fact is -- has been some real change progress and I think.
Amongst all the the -- necessary because of what is so tragically happened in the last few days we we duty to hold on.
Of that -- -- -- askew and there have been a lot of construction this break in Ramallah in particular but.
Today did you find that there was a sense among the Palestinians and a -- -- Abbas was with you today that possibly a two state solution is now.
Further away -- and do you think that a two state solution is possible.
All -- this year next year.
I think it is possible.
And I think that whatever -- setbacks we received we got people pushing for it because it is the only solution.
I was in Bethlehem which is in the Palestinian territory I've come through -- to Jerusalem here with -- -- Part of and Israel AD UUUC.
In each -- how -- people have to live together because of course the Palestinians to live in in the East Jerusalem.
-- is no solution other than peaceful coexistence living side by side.
A secure State of Israel and a viable independent state but Palestine that's the only solution to this issue and said it.
Yes of course what has happened in the last few days is yet another set back.
But it is important to recognize what has changed on the West Bank.
In the past couple of years the Palestinians are doing their own security.
The Israelis have stepped back we have been.
And apple opening some of the key checkpoints and expect access and movement points and tourism for example has tripled in Bethlehem and the -- couple of years.
It's normal that there's a long way to go to the -- huge challenges but we should -- ever give up because.
The only solution is peaceful coexistence.
In two states also.
Only a lot has happened in the last three years since you took on the role of special long boy a lot of positive things.
Happened but after the events of the weekend it seems -- that the Israelis are kind of digging in their fearful that their defending their actions.
Do you think that this jeopardizes in your opinion at least.
Of the goal of seeing the Palestinian economy not only stabilize at this point.
But triangle -- all along side the Israeli economy.
Well I still think it's necessary to do -- -- -- respective Gaza.
You know I thought you for a long -- that what we need is.
Is a policy because of that next boots didn't that help legitimate business that we build the infrastructure of Gaza.
And we can do that without aiding the extremists in in Gaza into Israel spot the genuine security -- we -- protect that.
But one way.
Of protecting it long is to lead Palestinian people Tibetan living conditions that to push from the bottom up if you like towards the Palestinian state.
Just as we negotiate the key issues bottomed -- top down -- You know -- I've been here and every single -- -- the Palestinian territory into Gaza.
Ramallah have -- -- -- you know all over the West Bank.
And I am absolutely convinced that the only solution that works long time.
Is one in which we built from the bottom up the economy the institutions of statehood.
At the same time as this high level negotiations.
Which the Americans on the -- the Mitchell conducted with Israelis and Palestinians.
To trying to find the borders of the state a deal with some of the -- difficult issues.
But never forget.
Indian states -- just about territory borders that are about people living conditions the economy and government's.
Well you've had a good relationship with President Abbas you've had many conversations -- prime minister.
Netanyahu I mean in though I know that you've only been there a couple of days at this point but have you been able to speak with either of them.
It in real time and to have good Clinton close talks with them basically to find out how they're feeling.
At this moment a word they say.
Things going moving -- What do you know I think for both -- months suspect President -- the day -- will see prime minister Netanyahu tomorrow.
Look for both of them they all they all very used to a situation in which.
Justice we try to move forward something dreadful happens and we seem to move back but one thing islands in in the way that I did with senator Mitchell in NORTHERN IRELAND.
Which is you just didn't give up and that there is no alternative but pushing -- say push off.
