It boasts one of the lowest unemployment rates in the country and a growing population so how in the heck did they do that.
Joining us now -- the -- he's been in east Parker and he's welcome good to see you.
Glad to be on with you sell.
Let's just start with the basic facts here how are you managing.
And to grow jobs there.
Well this is something that and we've been working on for a very long time.
People don't recognize that Houston is one of the most diverse cities in America we're really better known across our borders and across our state lines and we have been aggressively learning company's.
From all over the world that the big four sectors of our economy our oil and gas and and where -- -- and yes capital of the world we know that.
But that's not all right then you're much more diversified and that adds one of the things I found very interesting expected to hear -- energy story.
But that's not all that's going on there.
No we're the world's largest medical center we are -- that America's largest foreign -- port.
And we have Johnson Space Center NASA so.
You know -- -- -- area in the aerospace.
I read that you've certainly had -- -- -- A broad based economy we.
I I I didn't understand that you -- created more than a quarter million jobs.
In the nine years between 2002009.
How was the last year gone had he got caught up in the national reception.
We're suffering just like everyone else but there's been a lot of companies there are a retrenching into Houston and and we have actually grown.
In several areas in construction.
In the energy in the medical center -- we -- Parts of our economy can continue to expand.
Deal is -- helpful you have a business background he worked in private industry for a very long time.
-- -- comptroller of the city which is an elected position which is little different than a lot of places.
Does that help you figure out how to lure new companies into Houston.
The best thing to you can you do to lure companies -- you have a good quality of life.
And this city that provides of high level of basic city services you can.
You could offer tax incentives you can offer infrastructure build out you could offer access to venture capital which we do.
But if you don't have a good quality of life companies won't relocate.
All right and and you know I -- -- that Houston and I and so surprised by the amount of growth you -- had.
What are your plans going forward who are you wearing now what is secret tricks.
The secret sauce that you're using to get new companies that everybody talks about international companies I -- that's one of your priorities as well.
Well the whole world already lives in Houston we have 93 foreign consulates.
-- have an aggressive schedule of meetings.
And with all of our local counselor officials.
We entertain inbound and outbound trade delegations I'm going to be I'm going to China and August to the world expo.
Houston is already known on the national stage but we're trying to polish an image and actually make eight.
Face to face pitch.
Wherever we can.
And how many companies that he managed to bring in in the last few years.
-- in the last.
Six months or so since I've been in office we have.
-- sixty companies of various sizes that have either moved to Houston are expanded their physical presence in Houston.
Those big sectors of the economy.
When you work with the local.
Universities are education.
Community is well we've been able to leverage the fact that we have major research universities here.
Rice University with nano technology University of Houston with super conductivity and their new their new energy center.
That all very and we were -- well -- medical order.
I you know I have to ask you -- wouldn't think it center -- your growth is continued.
Continued during the housing boom it affected so many new growth cities at particularly out west.
In some in the south but.
He's really participate in that in fact you've had housing price growth.
Even in the worst.
Of the housing crisis.
How did you stay away from that.
And in fact one of the companies it is -- significantly expanded into Houston recently is -- -- homes that I would say two things one.
We're the largest on -- city in America which can make governing a little messy at times while but it means that weaken rapidly redeveloped.
An area goes into the Klein -- it can turn around very quickly.
We didn't have a housing bubble so we mean mortgage market's collapse that we didn't have the the sudden drop in property values are values leveled off.
And we had some foreclosures that had the move through book but we didn't have the severe dip in in values and that insulated us from a lot of what was going on in other parts of the country and -- -- -- call about the time that happened there was a run up in oil and gas prices.
How well that doesn't hurt that we -- we benefit.
Around yeah I do you remember that quite well their picks for joining us today we really appreciate it.
Always happy to.
