Noble prime time tonight with a press conference to rally America -- that -- Health Care Reform plan followed by trip to Cleveland tomorrow for town hall meeting.
As part of his week long media blitz and -- -- new data shows Americans are giving a good prognosis on the state health care a new Associated Press poll.
Shows more Americans have returned to thinking the country.
Is headed in the wrong direction.
Jerry doesn't feel the entertainment marketing firm united entertainment group and if the team director and senior program officer at the -- would.
Johnson foundation which works to expand health care coverage good morning gentlemen good to see you guys.
-- let me start with you.
President's gonna make this address tonight he's gonna appear in front of the American people.
-- by the way he announced it on Twitter.
-- -- over the weekend.
And I wonder -- tuchman -- of Reno about the slash -- wonder.
And nothing for five days in advance -- and you don't -- forget how old the support of your top Democrats.
Why -- decision what is -- -- there tonight without a lot of support.
I think he's coming back to what his platform has been all about which is transparency and honesty and sticking with his own message and by engaging with the public first saying I wanna be on.
Watch watch me and how many how many give I was told like it is I think that he's gonna try that create -- -- strategy.
Engaging with the with the with the public first and having both files kind of come along with him and and stick with his message -- Ukraine.
I agree and one of the things we're trying to do with the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation has been putting -- data that shows where the concerns at the American people are experiencing are.
So we presented data today.
Which shows that Americans are suffering that the at the feet of a flawed health care system.
They are extremely concerned about.
What they're gonna face in the year ahead if we don't do Health Care Reform.
So one of things were trying to do is make sure the president and members of congress focus on the fact that we cannot have the status quo.
We have to achieve Health Care Reform this year.
-- talking to the health and human -- secretary before and I said to her listen physical and understand -- I don't understand the immediate urgency.
I have I don't understand why it it has to be a marked up bill in August any.
Why not take some time here.
Instead of maybe two weeks or -- month.
Maybe three months to really put something together that fixes this system and -- getting something that's watered down or egregious for certain sect decided.
Do something that's gonna really work what are -- survey say about people's tolerance for that right now.
Well our surveys don't say anything about the tolerance for more debate.
But clearly no matter what happens there will be more debate.
It'll take more time beyond August recess of course to work out differences and the various bills.
And also take considerable time even years to work out details of the legislation.
Moreover there's been plenty of time already spent between both political parties policy makers and experts.
On how to reform the health care system we know a lot.
So I think -- the concern is and as -- secretary pointed out.
There is a great urgency that we -- -- deal with this now we've been waiting for lifetimes and you resolve it.
But there's also political urgency and I think folks who understand a legislative process no.
That the longer.
-- process like this plays out particularly -- -- one like this.
The more the easier it is to defeat.
I would assume Jerry did part of the -- the reason my presence gonna do this primetime press conference is because he's slipping in the polls.
And people again really wanting to get worried about the financial situation and he's got to go out there do what he does the last best which is basically sell what he's doing to the American people.
The question is is it is in deliver results because he's been out everywhere thus far and it and it might arguably be hurting him.
Yeah I mean the presents a great orator and he knows how to rally people around him I think as you said what he does best is getting.
People really excited about what he stands for and what his mission is.
I don't think there's any other way that he can do it I think he has to get out there as I said before engage with the public and get them excited about the bill as did he -- I agree.
He can't sit and wait the longer he waits the worse it's gonna beforehand just to go out that the flag in the ground.
And then figure out how it's going to work as opposed to just continue to wait have other people pitching their ideas he's got to get out there be firm.
As the people think he should be and and move on from there.
I want to read something.
We're getting a lot of emails and comments after the interview that I just have the health and human services secretary.
And -- me -- me now that I received.
-- the issue is not actually health care this label -- a smoke -- this system.
The secretary Sebelius and her boss actually believe it's quote -- Americans and the system that they're trying to fix is a capitalist system.
-- round with eyes wide open and recognize.
The theme of this administration and congress.
She's -- socialist.
Was bosses Marxist.
-- mean -- crazy call me crazy but why would we expect.
We're getting flooded with those emails anti flood.
And it's unfortunate it's it is rhetoric like this that obscures the debate undermines the debate.
-- -- and the language is out there intentionally to do that.
And and that's why would leave -- search that were putting out today is important.
The politic politics is necessary politics is how you forge compromise that it's actually going to.
Bring our lawmakers together and and achieve Health Care Reform.
But there's a negative side of politics of course and that is to frustrate.
The direction of the debate.
Right but -- the reason people.
-- -- is because.
We -- in one of the most challenging recessions in our country's history.
Unemployment is rising.
Wages -- declining.
People can't afford their bills -- -- more leverage than ever and as -- health and human sap services secretary -- 121000 people they're losing their health care coverage.
The problem is we're trying to do so much in such a short period time.
At a very difficult time in this country and and people want resolution we want reform we believe and reform.
We just not sure how we're gonna pay for that reform.
And -- and those are all legitimate concerns.
In in fact one of it consumer and information stemming from our research today.
If in fact 85% of Americans appreciate the fact that Health Care Reform is necessary to address the economic crisis.
So Americans feel and the bills they have to pay those bills.
Our health care bills.
50% of Americans.
Have you know questioned whether they can afford whether they're -- they think will be wiped out in the event.
A serious -- medical illness and so that is what you know this is trying to achieve.
There isn't there isn't an.
Endless need for debate and if we're back who go on we'll never resolve all the concerns of the American people have this is going to be an -- -- process.
It's not going to -- even when the president signs a bill so we're working it for the long haul but people should not mistake the -- the status quo.
Will be far more perilous to all of us if we don't act now unraveling on that sanitary -- thank you guys very much great conversation I appreciate.
