Almost fifty years in pro sports in.
Raising nineteen children from around the world know that that that's team building at the -- -- -- you -- -- -- and professionally and personally fourteen of those kids adopted -- very good you.
-- let's talk about this okay there there are two schools of thought in leadership one is.
That groups of people can come up with a better you know sort of crowd sourcing ideas that groups of people are smarter than one person the wisdom of crowds or other thoughts and say listen.
Leadership without making decisions not about collective thought.
I could see the argument for both.
Well Brian I think at the end of the day yes we need strong individuals but.
But you're not gonna really get things done at the highest level -- that she put a team together.
The days of the Lone Ranger operator over.
And I think what I've done in this book is explained these eight key qualities are key ingredients that have to be -- you're gonna put a great team together.
And there's a fascination this is -- in the business world.
About the great team builders in the sports world over the years and is all that sports stuff transferable over into the business is relevant because the guys like when you might suggest you do gummy bear some of the most sought after speakers -- -- -- -- Circuit right.
Well and I -- what I -- lessons for our small business owners that may be watching this program -- managers watching this program -- we do.
Principle number one you've got to have outstanding talent there's never been a great widget factory or an NBA team without great talent.
Second -- you've got to understand.
How important leadership is.
I've -- Brian there's never been a successful team that didn't have outstanding leadership.
And then at third principle that I write about it's called commitment great teams have committed to each other they've committed to the highest level of quality.
They've committed to compete.
And above all they've committed to win at the end of the day you got to produce w.s in whatever the -- but sometimes that means you've got to let people go to and bring in different players right we see it in sports when we we're gonna have to -- -- in business.
Well that's one of the things I write about Brian in this whole area of talent.
Higher very slowly take your time don't rush hiring be as thorough and complete you can.
And fire quickly because if there's a problem if things are not working if you're trying to put -- square pagan around the hole with people.
At the end of the day it's probably not gonna work so everybody is better off if you move on quickly.
One quick other lesson please.
Well I think the other thing that that I would share is simply bids.
You've you've got to build -- with character people old fashioned values honesty integrity responsibility.
A work ethic a humble spirit.
We we tend to think that's all gone out of style but as I've really study team building Brian.
Character people at the end of the day -- gonna get you through quickly I'll make some headlines hopefully in the sports world on fox sports is the magic.
Ready to win a championship with the nucleus and has now do you need to bring somebody else then.
What we feel we've made a lot of offseason moves notice that the GM's been Wheeling and dealing.
-- even though we got to the finals last year -- a terrific here we feel we've improved ourselves.
But with the Celtics getting better in Cleveland getting better with Shaq there now.
And other teams improving you can't stand still in this business and you'll get swallowed so we think we have improved definitely.
