This is a segment of the show we call play makers where we bring in the biggest names in sports entertainment business politics we mix it all up.
My partner is always mixing things up what -- shots and order the jets.
Businessman he's a political insider as anybody in New York up -- and joining us now is a man who is also become a real new Yorker and all story in many different fields sports broadcasting.
Entertainment and business.
-- -- -- -- thanks trap me on got enough pleasure the pleasure of HS tell anybody -- I know what got you on the team when -- well that's why I was gonna say you left the jets before you came it would you have hired this guy.
Absolutely but I was gonna ask you.
Did from you know you're a lefty that's right now there's some talk about another lefty Michael Vick that's right and how do you -- the team -- -- his legal and all that which is major right side.
With a left hand the and we know you warn you warn Iran are I was out like my little rubber not I was not likely that Michael is is not what we're better athlete but.
How do you build I -- the left tackle right tackle he goes down you've got to switch does.
Well I don't know you know -- play with more on the great left tackles of all time if not the greatest left tackle that was Anthony Munoz right and Anthony Munoz always used to tell me.
Just let me know where you're gonna be and always be in that same spot and I can protect you and that was something that Michael Vick.
Didn't really learn as a player prior to all this legal stuff that has been gone through and it makes it hard for offensive -- because -- was so spontaneous it was all over the wells.
At community always what do you -- and I and I was just going I think probably the greatest athlete that ever play quarterback is Michael Vick but that doesn't make him.
The greatest quarterback of all time the game is meant to be played out of the pocket.
That's -- Peyton Manning Tom you know Tom Brady and Donovan McNabb are so good as it is -- out of the pocket.
So either be really hard to -- -- -- that's an advantage because they're not seeing the ball coming out directions -- I will say this that defensive defensively I think I suppliers like a lefty tennis player right charges to cover all the time that you know I would do things opposite they would -- fifteen.
Different quarterbacks during the year and on number sixteen I would come -- and I would be the left -- And they would have to think backwards because we would do everything opposite -- itself.
I think another way you're right our guests here -- guys -- would you hire Vick.
When we got to quarterback you've got a great quarter where radio guys are ready you know I have my guess is asking you know just in terms of managing the team managed -- -- line if that goes down.
You know what does it change what -- Medicare just like that pat Kennedy writing for Woody Johnson would Woody Johnson say okay he's he's so good -- hired I think the -- look at his we've got two good quarterbacks and so were good on quarterbacks.
And believe it at that.
That's a good ways staying away from the controversy so -- ordeal like talking about sports Morton plant.
You know there's nothing quite like plan to balance for the guys are you work upon Sunday morning you get ready go to the stadium.
And there's the anxiety there's the excitement and then there's 75000.
Fans that you know didn't have to -- PS cells back in the day.
'cause I think eleven -- that's ahead.
Added -- an event but I will say this that there's nothing quite like it and -- now doing WFAN radio here in New York to a CBS television on the weekends.
You know doing Westwood One on Monday night's you know might my.
My play this fall as soon as you would say during the football season especially but I love what I do I get paid to do it calm and as long -- my bosses are happy then I'm certainly happen -- show.
They ask your question I mean we're talking about a they economy -- and it's -- right and some of the old Angel persistent problems of players in any leak.
Retaining their cash what they aren't as athletes which any career and athletics normally -- maybe exception Tom Watson.
-- -- order right and shorter and the young guys even you when you started out you went through your initial paychecks pretty rapidly.
How do you come up with a plan where you something like even a grand -- trust where you defer it until you're 3540 at least until you're out of your playing career and and don't buy cars and boats and.
Well -- and I think the inevitable -- that he gonna spend some money I did it when I was younger to not I didn't sign a fifty million dollar contract.
But Mark Sanchez did for one New York jet team I was making good money -- plans not a fact of the most money ever made in -- single season I believe was three million a year which.
Listen -- you know hey I'm happy and out elections right but today a guy that was making three million man is making twelve million now so it.
So there's going to be a little bit more flexibility with -- amount of spyware what did you what he -- blow the money on -- well you know I've bought my data car did all of you know the typical to what everybody else -- you know I helped you know expand this house so I made his life a little bit better with you you spend so much time making my life.
As good as he possibly could as a humanitarian side doesn't give you well what I do a lot of I owned houses I you know I -- a lot of cars I traveled originally I think does have the same money manager.
That I have since today I started -- -- 1984 she's been with me ever since when she I'll tell you turn direction pretty -- I did and then I realized also once you have kids now all of a sudden especially especially these telegraph -- -- -- Who has cystic fibrosis you talk about this as his health care debate rages I've been living in it.
For the last us eighteen years with -- Have to make sure that his future is covered have to make sure that my daughters' futures covered -- had to put money away for a college education we had a private school educated.
You know how do you get sad how do you get the young student and young athletes -- I was sad strangle all of them and should we can't look like yeah.
Get on one day and they.
And that's not enough it's not a candidate dates and everything -- the other thing too is you know they have to learn to trust people and and then when you read the newspaper whether -- Bernie Madoff for whether the some other Ponzi scheme that is going on.
You can realize that all these guys are worried about where they're gonna put their money and a I would hope that they would have some good people advising them some quality agents with money managers advising them but you know -- are you guys -- simplest -- treasury bills meant.
Well now it is chances are -- -- -- an athlete seasoned investment.
And everybody else is passed on an already so it's not a good message -- think about this for a second Bernie Madoff took down 65 billion dollars worth the money maybe even more than that.
And these world with educating people right and he was given them you know you don't fake numbers and all that other stuff I think about it if you're not that educated you don't come from a lot of money and all of -- sudden you win the lottery by making a an NFL roster and that's a lot of money in front of you how do you tell somebody.
What to do with that money and how does that person learn to trust -- -- vultures everywhere we're all used to do it I used to I don't see much anymore I think because people know that I'm already locked and loaded I know what I'm doing I'm trying to be very conservative.
With what you're in touch with a lot of the young athletes hear stories from them.
I do and I see a lot of my ex teammates from way back in the day.
That are destitute -- trying to kill our tissue want to prevent right right you do and you know on net and I always take it to the next step.
I hear a lot of retired athletes complaining that the NFL doesn't take care of them.
You know what I don't I didn't require the NFL to take care of them taking care myself.
You know -- the money that I earned that I have to put away that I have to make sure is there for a rainy day.
A lot of athletes unfortunately feel like you know there should be somebody else taking care of them not -- those guys -- saying today I don't have the same arguments you know listen now I've got into all these different entities after football whether B radio television nor.
Investments or business opportunities.
And I look at all those things with a fine toothed comb and I take it all cirrus -- watch my money.
And I and I'm also very charitable.
And I believe in charity now comes back at all those comeback but I also know that -- all of these new tax debates raging in the health care raging.
Health care is -- is you know is gonna go one way or the other.
Its either gonna cost somebody like me even more money not just taking care of my own some but also taking care of other people.
And then I have a foundation with ten employees.
You know and -- what happens to them when you know the people who have given us a lot of money over the years.
Might think twice about you know giving us -- the -- one -- I was Gunner doing I know he's -- -- Boston College in -- hell he's not going to be playing football I won't be playing football which you know thirty years ago.
They probably wouldn't of told us that you know college was a real possibility for him but you know with cystic fibrosis and the the breakthroughs that we've made through research and through the cystic fibrosis Foundation's leadership.
-- going to college and it's really cool not not that good things that government does -- -- and that's and that's research that's right NIH has been a big part of all they just aren't as you know way opens that's right and and and -- I -- -- -- for he's my wing man and he's been my wing man for eighteen years.
And he's going away to college are made out like every other parent who's going through this for the -- hour right now on said I am really said I'm anxious to get a dollars Donna still hanging below the whole another story and -- -- she's going to excuse she's gonna rush is on our connection to the -- you're you're doing well on radio.
I am who I -- really you've had some good comparisons with -- -- he's tough live I've great partner Craig carton who's a real radio guy our our ratings.
However I would like to talk about ratings because they go like this a lot of times but what's your number one now with a birdie on yeah FA -- made number 1 in the morning -- time slide through it very very proud of it -- -- what happened at radio station the value stations is going down.
Well I know one either going to be able to compete want to it's still a free medium remember yes you know you turn on your way out of a -- -- -- -- for a what's serious here and exile now.
I mean -- that you can't really follow the ratings there I mean I think they do internally.
Best they can.
I'm sure it's an alternative for some people -- like the personalities on that format.
But for us just like when we are free radio baby eternal son and there we are every morning six to ten screaming on at each other WA AF talk about the jets the Mets -- the -- days.
And they give us all these news stories boomer guys and what a pleasure to thank you so much router but what is so.
