A lot about teachers' salaries and teachers unions on this program now let's bring in a real -- -- a coffee.
He's a future in Georgia he's the author of the book how to survive them perhaps thrive on a teacher's salary.
Danny welcome to the program it's very going to be at the Columbine project.
And -- Ernie thanks so much for having me on how much -- you make.
I'm -- now it's a little about 39000 dollars a year we we actually haven't even gotten our -- contract yet because we have furlough days coming been.
They really don't know yet so but I'm going off a blasters figures so little about 39000 -- -- -- and didn't dollars and you that you pay.
And you've got in the lifelong some holidays -- holiday Christmas time and in this and I'm not not being facetious but you've got some generous vacation time that.
And it's very good benefits I take it fat health and pension and all the rest of my.
On the health insurance idea hey you know some out of my pocket -- for my family but they do covers.
And the -- we actually in the state of Georgia we contributed automatically taken out cover page on 5% each month this is taken -- You know I don't have a choice with that fitness for the -- that you teach because you wanna be a teacher.
You teach for the love of it you're a natural born you'll cold to being a teacher you are not teaching for the money -- -- right now.
That's correct I mean it's hard to complain with the money I mean because a lot of people are struggling right now and you did mention you know that we do have some pretty good benefits.
But I would think most agree that 39000 dollars a year and this is my eleventh here teaching you know it's not a large salary so you know first and foremost I did have a passion.
For teaching to get into it over time you know you can do really well but yet I I ask you because look at that financing of teaches an education.
Is a real problem at the moment because state budget saw often in deficit.
A -- Alaska the what do you think about the union.
Because we've often talked about the union on this program and the way that they perhaps represent the union as opposed to teachers and children.
Won't fuel reaction once -- feelings about the union.
I think you can do some good things with you know fighting first salaries but I also think that I've seen in the past.
That they can protect teachers that are doing a good job you know what you and does -- amid a union protects its membership that's what a union's -- I mean that's why you pay your -- if they get protected and I think you know unfortunately.
A few bad apples can bring down the whole profession and let's just say if you're a teacher that has thirty students and -- not a great teacher.
Well there's thirty parents we're gonna think negatively upon the teaching profession you -- that you know.
Danny -- have you got ten yet another was that you can't -- 5 tomorrow morning can -- Right there is a process you have to go through correct okay.
Would you favor -- I think we're at a point that we need to really think about doing that because teaching -- such an important job and you know in the private sector -- show for -- -- you don't do your job he may be given a little warning or whatever but a lot of times you're gonna be out the door because the company is you know they need to make money and if you're not upholding -- into the bargain.
Then I think it's time to go and I do think -- -- with teaching because it's such an important profession that we have there are our future I mean were in charge of educating our future.
If we're not doing a good job doing that our country is going to suffer so I would say that I I think that we need to start looking at it a little differently.
And getting those features that are doing a good job -- how -- you -- a brave man.
-- we really appreciate you being with us today which we could -- -- far more -- just like you dwelled on -- thanks for being with -- Thanks so much.
