Calling out the red carpet this Sunday this year's Academy Awards is setting up as a showdown between the eye popping visual extravaganza avatar.
And the suspense filled -- a mother her -- who was gonna come out on top.
Get a score off course we have media entertainment analyst and Academy Award winning producer Peter don't work here great to see -- thanks for being here.
My pleasure so let's start of the controversy over the Hurt Locker.
You know there -- this guy who.
Did something dumb apparently and again it's all allegedly etc.
we want to qualify but the fact did this story is that he sent a letter to academy leaders saying hey.
Vote for the Hurt Locker because the other guys spent you know hundreds of millions of dollars and we did it on a tight budget.
That guy apparently is not going to be allowed into the Academy Awards is that could affect -- hurt -- chances at all.
Non non now all these people crawl out of all these -- at the last minute they got a little piece of acclaim and will be profane.
And no I don't think so I think people -- voting on that benefit and the burden of each of the -- I think it'll come out pretty much along those lines are right now when I think -- best picture I think of something that's a real breakaway guy I don't mean to focus on camera but something like Titanic.
Or gone with the wind -- the godfather.
Hurt Locker is not that kind of movie even though the direction of the Hurt Locker was fantastic.
So is it fair to say that a best picture would be a more along the lines of an avatar which really sort of sets a new agenda for what Hollywood does.
-- been something -- Hurt Locker.
I think you said -- preferably I think that's exactly.
The argument and you know the only difference is that the academy -- -- statues of academy is unique 6000 voters.
And some of them are a little ticked off that -- so much digital wizardry in the avatar that -- venerate actors is so forth.
That's one side of it and the other one is that there's such a big picture.
That -- the face about just didn't -- they feel but I think that it does get a big voting block and box and studios.
I think it could well be the proper and you're right it did change the language of cinema.
-- of course the irony of this is that two former married couples James Cameron and his and his and his wife who did that Hurt Locker might they give her.
The best direction because as I mentioned the direction.
The film the Hurt Locker was picked I think what you will.
Of how they might have messed up what what goes on in Iraq a lot of veterans of Iraq including my son by the way say.
They got some details -- but the direction the suspense was incredible so maybe.
Best picture to Cameron.
And best director -- hurt the Hurt Locker where you think.
I think -- has it right I think that reality.
The reality is that that you said it really all but I really -- doesn't predict that they did directors guild.
Which -- only by direct business.
Both 9% of the time for the win and they voted for Kathryn Bigelow so it's a pretty good odds on bet that she'll win which is.
The reason why they might spread the wealth to give best picture to have a job.
You're very -- you must have been channeling me because I couldn't remember her name Kathryn Bigelow forgive me Kathryn Bigelow.
But again we -- we think you may get -- okay let's talk about actors and actresses -- actor Jeff Bridges I haven't seen crazy heart what you think of his acting and.
I think superb -- a four time Oscar nominee hasn't won yet.
The constituents and the academy is all that probably fifty to sixty not young guy Jeremy Rana who is sitting in the wings to potentially -- yet.
They feel probably he can way he -- like the hall of fame.
And I think that those the two leading candidates I think up in the area and Clooney's got -- has I don't think this is the place we've got -- emerged.
But you know it's an irony devil run is want a lot of awards as does that Jeff Bridges and I think Jeff Bridges bridges the overall lead in favored in that category -- -- Lou we've talked a couple time about the politics not in -- in the clear left right politics thing but.
Just in terms of of whether people vote with our -- rather than their brain in the academy that is a guy.
Who's you know been up for it like bridges says four -- hasn't received it does that play a part in people's decisions.
Human being beings vote the last time I know it breathing most of my breathing living human beings voting.
And they they generally vote without hard on their wallet -- maybe third of their minds you know their -- if they're part of a mob -- studio and you know -- hard if there.
You know really -- cinema file and they're really you know believe that I think.
This case they're gonna vote with the -- And actresses.
Ted it's it it's a tiger -- the actresses were all so good those were nominated whose your on -- on favorite.
Well -- Sandra -- we're that sleeper film that became a sports -- -- the woman leads probably the inside favorite because of the prior awards but you know.
You know when you think about Meryl Streep -- been nominated 141246.
Times and in this is a real winner and -- a -- maybe the greatest American actors right now.
But I think this film -- she was then Julie Julia.
Didn't emerge that big time films that doesn't leave her a lot of room to win again that's against.
Sandra and finally the business of the Academy Awards Peter how much you have a difference does it make in the end whether -- studio does well or not.
Well you know monetizing the Oscar is very different now because the film's most of them played out her -- has essentially out of the theater is.
Have a Dodd has no -- money to -- -- from having that they've taken it all off available so the question as we get is wears a monetization well.
For her -- if it were to win.
If you're willing to win.
A small studio like summit would have a great benefit it would give a lot alike that company probably allowed to raise a lot more capital it would make -- -- value of the terminal value of that film more for that company so there is a real monetization value via.
But for the actors and actresses.
Not very much Peter go are you gonna be there by the way.
I'm going to be angry satellite that bad ticket but I'm not going to be -- this yet Ben is 24 times four times -- saddened that there when my -- for best picture.
And you've you've had enough -- you gonna do a Marlon Brando thing and just call in somebody to pick up your award if you get one for something to you might get like Diana and who knows.
I have an American -- standing by to come out streaking across the stage behind.
You got it all cover all the bases are covered by Peter Gruber as usual Peter great to see -- thanks for being here appreciate it.
