-- through the market for a used to where they call them a gently pre owned car are you going green or red eagle on -- like a big bad SUV.
The numbers say used car buyers aren't looking at small cars as much in the value those cars is taking a hit for more.
Let's turn to Paul Taylor is chief economist with the National Automobile Dealers Association -- with Brian Sullivan thanks for coming on Fox Business.
My uncle owns big used car dealership down in Virginia and -- he's saying not only are sales all.
But now he's moving a lot suvs that's surprising to you.
Now it's not gasoline hit four dollars and eleven cents last summer it's relatively modest by comparison this summer so.
The usual mix of vehicles is coming back on -- side.
And that's heard some small car prices although not all of them we've drilled down into the inning DA -- to take a look at it and I'd like share some of that with you break it out would -- to see -- how batter up some of these cars the small cars how -- -- they get hit.
The smallest cars the -- Americans usually don't fit into but that that they buy when they -- worried about gasoline prices which they were last summer.
Are down 35% compared with those elevated prices last summer.
The popular small cars like the fifth and the artists in the year.
Versa -- actually down to 4%.
-- -- down about 12% so what's happening is Americans are shifting back to cars that meet their households needs.
And that's bring down the prices of the small cars bringing up the prices of the truck based product in the larger in midsize sedans.
It pretty fair to -- Made that the American you know I -- I know there's a big push to be a little more environmentally friendly but it's fair to say that.
For a large part of America for whatever reason they got -- -- something they got a couple kids they -- -- them to carry around this feel safer.
Bigger cars are the better option for a lot of family.
At least that's what they want.
If you're calling something -- going camping certainly the suburban that your.
One -- your choices and even if you're buying the sedan you wanna -- in the end they'll take the whole family on vacation and reasonable comfort.
So in the absence of a gas prices that are tremendously high in four dollars and eleven cents cause that reaction last summer.
You find it households buy cars that that meet those needs.
You know I was a little bit surprised by the reaction of consumers the high gas prices listen I know it's expensive to fill up tanks especially four bucks a gallon but you still gotta fill the tank even with a smaller car it's gonna cost hit a few more dollars maybe ten or fifteen more dollars every time you fill up in an -- So -- total four times a month okay sixty to a hundred dollars more in gas.
I know that's a lot of money but when you look at the price of an issue do you think it lost 45000 dollars in large part.
Are people really this price sensitive and -- in my 45000 dollar you know escalade.
-- really worried about another hundred dollars a month and gaps.
You can afford it but but it noise issue and so sometimes that affects your choice and vehicles and we see that only win.
Gas prices typically hit a -- that they haven't crossed before last summer that happened.
Now people are used to the gas in the 150 to fifty range and that's where it's been for the last year.
So again what we're seeing is a more normal mix of vehicle selling in the new market -- the -- market.
There was also some results.
The clunker trades that cause people to.
Go after some of the smaller cars but generally more expensive smaller cars like the hybrids and like.
The corolla rather than the small -- small cars.
During the clunker.
Event and and that's sold those cars and now.
And converted some usual used car buyers of that size cars into the new category.
So that's another downward pressure on the used versions of those cars.
Well some were black compared we have we got to leave it there I'm sorry this is a great time and everything like that -- Listen we'll get back on -- don't wanna talk about the month after cash for clunkers possibly your folks are doing out there it's Alaska back on -- -- to talk about that okay.
