We'll have served our country.
-- The defense of freedom and justice and now it is time for our leaders.
To do the same.
Short time after lieutenant Dan Choi said those words yesterday he was arrested for chaining himself to the fence outside the White House.
Lieutenant Choi is protesting the continuation of the Don't Ask Don't Tell policy a policy that led to the discharge of this heroic Iraq War veteran.
Lieutenant -- was released from custody earlier today.
And made his way from Washington to New York.
So he could be with us here tonight lieutenant Choi welcome back to freedom watch what were you trying to accomplish yesterday outside the gates of the White House.
We have to make a very clear and resounding message to all of our leaders that in time of discrimination.
The people who Wear their uniform.
Who have been discriminated against.
Even though they were trying to protect the very country -- And just -- treats them.
We are standing up and saying that you if you were not involved in process of repealing Don't Ask Don't Tell -- you're betraying not only gay people but all of America.
-- you're a graduate of West Point you're a veteran of the Iraq War at some point during the you're being an officer in the united states army you did tell about your sexual orientation and they kicked him out.
Since that time a federal court has prevented the government from enforcing Don't Ask Don't Tell during that time period when Don't Ask Don't Tell was prevented from being enforced did you try -- get back -- I did try and what happened and when President Obama.
Wanted to resurrect Don't Ask Don't Tell from the dead.
Really cause lot of confusion.
Among the recruiting command.
They assumed my paper should be shredded they put me in the same pile of applicants that did not graduate high school or have a -- And so after saying that my paper was were being shredded.
I made very clear message to President Obama that he has lost my trust you said earlier we have a full screen of what you said this is before the incident and what you were changed to the White House yesterday.
There -- loud homophobia.
Of those platforms and there is a silent homophobia.
Of those who purport to be our friends and do nothing.
Loud homophobia and silent homophobia.
Have the same result they must become batted.
And this is what we intend to do did you say that yes of -- were you referring when you send silent homophobia the president of the United States absolutely.
Anybody who purports to be a leader in this country.
We have raised our right hand and swore to protect the meaning of the constitution the constitution itself which tells all of us that we should be treated equally under the law.
And when we have this kind of injustice going on.
When homophobia -- not only.
Rears its ugly head in the laws but on the playgrounds in.
The schools where kids get bullied for being gay and you have so many suicides we have to wake up to the realization the truth that.
If you do nothing then you are just as dangerous is those people who are allowed.
Our we're we're gonna run a clip that happened yesterday tell us what happens here this is you.
-- and it to a fence outside the White House and they woke.
-- what's going through your mind there what are they saying today what are they -- At this point.
Although we're not resisting arrest we're not assisting in the process and for me.
Well there were.
Taking control of my body and putting me under arrest -- Realize.
How so my Iraqi People felt when.
In a time of war that they lose complete control of their own -- -- and other video I don't know if seeing this one this this is one of these guys.
Stopping you'll have to -- -- -- and then within these what's going through your mind at least at this point I'm not resisting.
And I am making sure that people know.
Things that I said after.
Being arrested with zip ties on my wrist that although I have.
Bondage in a physical capacity.
I am more afraid than I have ever been because I've thought for just when you change yourself to the White House about how did you do -- handcuffs yes OK did you know and expect.
That they would cut it down and arrest you that's certainly a little we're gonna leave -- there.
We knew full well just like when I came out publicly to tell the truth I was standing for something that truly believed in.
And we knew that his little consequences we're proud to stand does this message get through.
To libertarians to conservatives to liberals in the congress have done nothing for you.
For the rights of of gay and lesbian and transgender people I think the message has to be absolutely clear this is not just the lobbying issue.
This is not just something which you can pay money for and win.
Through paper this is something that affects people's lives is how serious this is -- when discrimination is not fought against.
The result is not only contrary to what America stands for but it's deadly invent it talks -- -- the entire being.
Lieutenant Choi thanks very much her for joining us -- Now here's something you have a right to know about the competition.
The First Amendment says congress shall make no law abridging the freedom of speech.
It does not say that freedom of speech is suspended.
In matters pertaining to the military.
I have argued before that this means that the military's Don't Ask Don't Tell policy.
Unreasonably restrict -- freedom of speech absent some evidence that talking about sexual orientation.
Isn't imminent threat to national security.
Free speech obviously means letting those who may offend you speak not just those who agree with you.
Whether speech is viewed as liberal or conservative as libertarian -- as crazy.
Or even -- subversive.
The military does not wield a -- -- over the First Amendment.
And the military's anti gay policies are also a threat to freedom of association.
And the right to privacy think about it you chose -- romantic partner -- -- around it doesn't require the permission of your neighbors or the voters.
Or and I got.
