No big controversy about young athletes taking injuries that not only could ruin their career but ruin their lives.
Out of this fear a group of sports experts sense an opportunity for a new business designed to determine if baseball players were hurting themselves by the way they were playing it's called.
And three of the principles are here with us now former Major League general manager and friend of scoreboard Jim -- Former Major League pitching coach Rick Peterson.
And -- that I really mean famed orthopedic surgeon doctor James Andrews whose reputation deservedly precedes him.
By miles gentlemen good to see all thank you for joining -- -- first few yeah I had a -- get this going.
Well this is something that.
Rick and I have talked about for quite some time is actually Rick's idea way back when he was.
A pitching coach in Birmingham when he had the opportunity to meet up with -- -- Andrews and his group down there and -- semi and and because of his experience at the Major League level in dealing with music pictures and all of the injuries that we have seen at the Major League level 330 million dollars.
We're on the disable this last year it was amazing pictures now we said Jesus -- -- way that we can bring this to the amateur market and try to get this off a valiant and hopefully keep.
The pitcher's health.
So let me get an idea what you're doing here -- you you go out and -- some of the players and see if they're doing something that in the eyes of doctors like doctor -- who really screw up their career and their lives but what's different -- at the professional at the Major League level.
We've taken over eighty some -- to the lab.
In collaboration with doctor Andrews in 1989 when doctor and he's had this incredible vision.
To open up a lab for the bio mechanical study the pitching delivery to reduce the risk of injury enhance -- -- to enhance performance.
I happen to be the first pitching coach ever in there and from that point on my career totally change house.
Because this is the most advanced pitching program that is out there -- few doctors research.
Do we know now from getting measurements in the pitching delivering -- if there's a red flag.
In that delivery that could be a major major risk of injury we now can make and adjustments and make changes to that as you're watching Barry Zito right here.
Who went to the lab prior to his Cy Young award year.
Went and then won the Cy Young.
And I gotta say that that this.
With his analysis we are less able to make -- significant differences cliff Lee's pitching today right now I went to the lab CC sabathia is gonna open up Friday's.
Game game 10 -- show us it has pulled up.
Doctor Andrews and just put your career and you forgive me for.
Putting it in a nutshell here but didn't some -- your patients include Michael Jordan Joba Chamberlain Peyton Manning Eli Manning Shaquille O'Neal I could go on and on but.
More specifically to this particular business Jonathan Papelbon who actually I watched him play unfortunately Red Sox -- win a game.
But there he was he was playing essays a closer for the Red Sox you worked with him as well and exactly what do you do what do you see.
About the way somebody is pitching that might lead you to believe.
That they're -- for injury.
Well one of the big problems is all over rotation.
Then they sit there trying to reach back in and and all around -- to throw just a little bit harder and -- your where your rotator cuff in your life from what supposed to common areas and was -- injured in this elder.
And then there about fifteen absolute simply go look far.
And kind of -- correcting and have proper mechanics and we can tell from about mechanical evaluation -- and Rick Rick really the one they can recognize that not me.
But but but tell me exactly what they would be in for if they didn't change their style.
Well let's it's a gradual wearing tea phenomena in their -- her.
And not only the shoulder but -- -- itself and that's why for example -- seen so many.
Rotator cuff -- combination injuries in the shoulder and we're seeing that Tommy -- injury to bale -- Not a lot of it is a related to to the number of pitches -- PH and -- and again that's associated with product improper.
Mechanics and their comes the injury.
But but I think it incorrectly if I'm wrong doctor but there was this Tommy John -- surgery that used to be done -- the elbow or maybe is still -- is that the kind of surgery that they would have to have if they didn't change your style.
That's a big operation on male well.
All right well how do you make money off for -- -- are you paid directly by the players or by the teams are.
Or has correctly from the players and -- we very taken it to market we have several.
Relationships with academies are ready we're finalizing an agreement -- Little League.
We have an agreement are ready with the largest.
Tournament and and showcase in this country perfect game -- so really we're we're bringing it in making money off club with a win.
Plus parents take their kids through the program in film their kids and there's certain angles that we have on our web site.
That -- film though -- to us via the Internet we create a portal for them this is what we're looking now right now it's a very similar to what they would receive if they when they upload their.
Video to us we would send them report which would highlight any red flags fifteen red flags there are in the delivery.
And Rick in Rick has obviously proven this that the Major League level we're taking that obviously to the amateur mark.
Well -- it is important for the majors to have this but it also.
You can save a kid a lot -- lot of heartache and perhaps training -- and a way that might make them professional.
Absolutely and what's so amazing is that this is this advanced technology that.
At one time was only for Major League players now we've been able to take it from little leaguers all the way to the elite college pitchers all based on doctor -- research and development.
Can truly make a difference in these injuries and his doctor his resist saying.
Tommy John surgeries are up over 700%.
At the amateur market 700%.
-- another -- it's epidemic and to start at the Little League level.
To teach kids how to throw properly.
-- -- throw properly.
And then have your delivery intact so that they can truly stay healthy and enjoy the game -- -- By the way doctor IBM a yankees fan I have to admit but that.
When I looked at when I look at -- at that.
Some of them the really good players that better closers Mariano Rivera chief among them.
And they are like approaching -- I think -- is now about forty years old is he doing everything exactly right.
Well he's got the right -- and he's certainly doing everything right at age forty and that's it that's his exact age.
And you gotta have almost nominations debate that's a -- Oh by the way you've also dealt with football players in basketball players could this business turn into the same thing for basketball and other sports.
You know -- -- status covered up right now and and where it -- -- of course in prevention of injuries in all sports the counselors as Rick said there's an epidemic of injuries particularly in youth sports.
And -- baseball just happens to have the -- the limelight right now.
But the other sports are falling right behind it particularly for example they -- soft -- got to do a lot in that area to.
And Jim I'm thinking I -- -- knee injuries and in basketball we'll certainly knee injuries in and basketball you certainly do it in volleyball as well that the baseball seven million amateur pictures.
Two million in soft balls well that's where the market is next and that's where we plan to go after the pitching market by the way where do you plan to go with a business.
While we're in the point where I guess that we've we've very established a number of different relations were at a point now where we're ready to raise capital and you're out for investors looking for investors attracted do you have any trouble finding -- they -- -- to area.
We had a couple.
Yeah we certainly have we have -- lined up and because it's just it's just so exciting to be able again to partner with doctor Andrews to truly make a difference it's.
-- the most exciting things I've ever been involved with in my life are right while he is he is a legend in his field heard about it for a long time doctor James Sanders thank you so much for being here.
