President Barack Obama continues his push to shut down gitmo couple weeks ago while meeting with French leader Nicholas Sarkozy the president told reporters -- follow.
I made the decision to close Guantanamo because I did not think it makes America -- -- congress both Democrats and Republicans don't -- today.
Senators voted by nine need to six to cut from a war spending bill the eighty million dollars -- was your crew requested by President Obama.
To transfer hundreds of inmates from Guantanamo.
And close down the camp by January 2010 -- lawmakers.
Say they need to actually see a real concrete plan from the White House senators still want to know.
We'll we bring terrorists onto American soil.
And what will happen to them once they are released our tax dollars.
Could very well be used to help them reenter civilian life and then what will it be wandering on streets across America will they go back to the battlefield a lot of possibilities.
That are not that delightful Fox -- State Department correspondent.
James Rosen has been following the story he reports to us live from the Department of State so what's the latest James.
Well the president and his national security team and David are still maintaining they can meet this one year self imposed deadline of January 2010.
Of the White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said today flatly the president made a promise he intends to keep that promise.
Of course it's a bit more than a promise it's an executive order he signed it carries the force of law at the same time.
Gibbs gave the reasoning the president holds -- why he wants to accomplish this in that time for.
Heard president reason I would say members of both parties agree.
Guantanamo Bay has become an image.
For terrorists around the world.
At the same time David we heard from a senior State Department official today who said.
But just in terms of trying to get other countries to agree to take some of these people's back into their native soil.
The United States ought to be prepared to do the -- James work where folks surprise inside about -- that some Democrats were coming out against us.
Yes it was kind of good defection by the Obama administration's natural biological allies.
And so in order to push back against that a top Defense Department official today the undersecretary of defense for policy.
-- for -- basically told lawmakers to get over themselves.
So they're gonna have to make some hard decisions here we're gonna have to step up to the plate.
And think strategically about this.
Basically wasting -- going to have to get used to this idea of some of the gitmo detainees are going on US soil at the same time perhaps undermining that message the FBI director Robert Mueller today.
Pull the House Judiciary Committee he has real concerns about these gitmo detainees even from their prison itself here in the United States.
Somehow being able to aid and abet terrorist cells operating here in the United States -- the administration not speaking with entirely one -- -- David.
By the way that get over yourselves you're not paraphrasing that was a quote right.
I am paraphrase all are -- just it's always so much fun to say from back.
I think I -- quotes around it one of the news stories that's why it's good to see AJ thank you.
Joining us now from inside about ways Republican representative Phil getting -- he -- of Georgia and he issued a no gitmo in Georgia act that was intended to ensure that current gitmo detainees are not -- located.
To his state and congressman I understand I understand your position and I I wouldn't want them close to where I live I don't think.
Anybody would because there's a track record.
There have been some detainees who have ended up back on the battlefield doing some very evil things right.
Absolutely and you know -- I introduce a resolution back in February.
13 outlook a congressional delegations -- the house.
Did the same thing.
And you know you can say well it's -- not my backyard catapult our approach will certainly it is you're nobody wants these these characters and their backyard and that's why the senate was so unwilling.
To put eighty million dollars in this emergency supplemental.
Without a plan for what to do with these detainees -- commend them for that.
What were you surprised I just as James I guess a lot of people in DC were surprised when I heard Harry Reid.
The leader of the senate Democrats say and essentially nimby not in my backyard as well.
Well you know I think it's an -- suggested -- would put him anywhere in the United States maybe Yucca Mountain.
Would be a good spot since -- won't let us put nuclear waste there but -- quite honestly I have Abdel in the armed services committee.
Awful for years and I visited Guantanamo Bay twice during that.
Thought interview and in -- in the -- privacy.
Each individual detained me.
I -- no mistreatment.
The food was good it was culturally appropriate.
The prayer beads were there for each and every one -- Indeed quite a few of more world of inside the -- playing soccer.
Also it's not a horrible place -- it's a good place to detain these.
These enemy combatants and that's what they are not -- war until we can determine they're they're guilt or innocence and they certainly will have their day.
Called before a military tribunal in the supreme court of course has approved that.
Well when will that -- -- might might this whole thing I'm I'm wondering if if this whole thing drags out may be -- -- -- -- won't let it drag out but if it does.
Could their day in a military tribunal actually happened before they leave gitmo.
Well that's certainly very possible goals the president to end to a degree has put himself in a little bit of -- back and with a new executive -- a date certain these date certain -- dog mechanic come back to bite you sometimes in the same thing in regard to getting all the troops.
Out of Iraq on a date certain the president.
You know made that play -- on the campaign but I think he understands now.
That that's not feasible after talking with general Petraeus and general Odierno when in flawed that the your commanders on the ground and and Afghanistan and Iraq so he could he could certainly.
Rescind that executive board -- now may -- the president's gonna have a speech tomorrow I'm I'm very anxious to hear what he's -- site.
Maybe they do have a plan.
But it cannot include bringing into the United States and put them on our soil and I think you ask any Republican or Democrat.
Majority of minority and they we'll tell you.
Not no but -- you know.
And let's before we appropriating money to build a prison.
Ball or create some it's kind of -- court system of them what we've got.
-- let's see what his plan this congressman do you know sheriff Joseph Arpaio for miracle we're counting.
I have heard of -- OK I'm -- I like if you're wondering.
I mean you know a lot of the lawyers representing these detainees say -- you know all of this stuff that they go through you they wouldn't go near dead stuff that they were on US soil.
Imagine if Joseph Arpaio had these -- Joseph Arpaio -- guy who spends less than one dollar I think it's 87 cents a day on rule for his prisoners some of whom.
Wear pink underwear etc.
US soil it varies from place to place in terms of how prisoners are treated doesn't.
Well it does and I don't think -- any question that the former administration.
Did everything that they could to make sure the prisoners.
Were treated appropriately they're not Prisoner of War but they were granted all the lights of the Geneva convention.
And I know because I was there I witnessed it.
I'm a position.
Before becoming a member of congress I got to visit the medical facility they -- got to talk to the surgeon.
That there was in charge of their their health care.
State of the art absolute state of the art so there is no clue what -- -- -- is no mistreatment.
Paula today there is a system put in place.
That does not know what does not grant them the same rights -- our own citizens the right to -- habeas corpus and the rights to come.
The United States in and have access -- point systems.
-- just imagine what would happen of these people are released into our society.
And we know there's some that have been released -- combat of the countries and don't write back on the battlefield and some locals have been killed trying to kill our own soldiers.
All right doctor representative -- -- -- actually if you wanna stay with us please do because you -- to turn to an expert panel we have joining us is Mike Baker.
He's a former CIA Covert operations officer he's now president of diligence LLC it's a global intelligence and security firm Monica Crowley.
Fox News contributor and democratic strategist Julie regents he good to see you wall -- first -- thanks for coming on.
What actual intelligence threat -- these people -- on US soil that they don't now -- At -- well I.
Kate is that this so much here.
First of I don't understand the logic trends says.
That because of gitmo where less safe.
You know in the area gets a wonderful thing and while while while we're all drowning level -- and wanna be more -- -- and is not a wonderful thing.
But -- from a reality point of view -- more safe because we have gitmo as an offshore facility to house these detainees.
This is not something new this is not suddenly Obama -- -- problem when he said by god I'm gonna close this place the Bush Administration has been trying or tried prior to the change.
For quite some time to find a way to get rid of -- to close it down primarily by going to our allies and saying would you please take some of these people.
They have no interest in in doing that.
In part because and again we you know we're worried oh my they have been in beef problem -- -- same problem and it's a very legitimate problem and the extremists now we look at me in in certain again real -- let's get away from the whole theory of of me you know we don't wanna feel good about myself.
The extremists out there and in in Islamic community.
They're gonna be upset with this weather we have -- what we have these people and facilities in the US or whether they're housed in -- -- repatriated back to our allies in and that's not gonna happen.
-- and that's the majority in the in the Muslim world.
They don't want these people back in the neighborhood I wanna get -- here -- Julie how does President Obama deal with Harry Reid if he can't get the leader of the Democrats in the senate to go along with us how's -- gonna get it done.
Well for us let me just seasoning to get to the congressman we already have some of these people on our soil super Max facilities -- not a surprise to anybody I'm sure the congressman's very aware of this.
That -- salaries here.
That Richard Reid the shoe bombers here very bad people who some of them admitted to something to their crimes others were convicted.
But the point is that these people are super Max facilities they're never getting out as -- -- They might ever get out there are people have got nobody has ever nobody's ever got out of through my -- that is.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- It beat out the actual leaders of al-Qaeda and comparing -- let me Sally -- -- -- up.
Let me also finished and say this has done to senator it's afternoon when of the ninety that voted against us and he said he voted against it because he wanted to see a plan wanna see -- are taxpayer dollars are being spent.
And and once he figures out the plan is he's -- he's.
Open right now like the -- -- -- he may not like the plan but the bottom line that he said is what he feels like he's recovering -- 75%.
Of Americans don't want these people on our soil right they're just -- and and and obviously the congressmen and the senators have heard about this.
And they don't want to take the political heat.
Exactly and the problem here is that President Obama announced on.
He announced that without a plan isn't it ironic.
That for X number of years going into Iraq that the Democrats have President Bush with the exact same criticism you don't have an exit strategy.
What's going on here you don't have a plan.
Well now -- President Obama finds himself in a very thorny security and legal position.
With Guantanamo -- the reason our allies don't wanna take these people is obvious there are terrorists not necessary -- -- you talk.
Did any of your democratic colleagues who who say that there may be a plan that would.
That they could sign off on -- is it just -- no matter what.
OK I guess we lost -- guy.
I think frankly -- I think that's that's right and you know at the point where they feel their political survival is intact.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- In putting these people on US soil congressman.
Well I want to hear what the president.
Scott the site but I I think that this all all members of congress are probably gonna be be very reluctant to put him on United States soil.
Even though law as as the lady that go on the Democrat strategists said there are -- couple -- to read at all that are here now Richard -- I think it was one that was mentioned but that doesn't mean.
That we win in this business of -- -- that there's no possibility of a state look.
They're two people still missing from -- Petraeus so I mean it's it's possible they couldn't skate.
And we're not gonna take that chance to people in Georgia don't want to take that chance and and I think that dog that my colleagues in the congress.
Have spoken spoken very clearly on this issue why haven't done -- -- that's got.
