Morning fair and balanced Republican congressman John Culbertson is joining us.
He's from Texas cities and -- he's in DC this morning of course at Fox News political analysts Ellis Henican we get -- of the moment.
In the studio.
Talk -- -- point of view but congressman let me start with you.
Just talk for a few minutes about how the Republicans are approaching this again did -- -- but this idea political theater is there any way.
For the Republicans -- -- -- serious -- that leads to real compromise issues that you think can be accomplished today or is that just ask you -- too much.
We'll be Americans that we represent are suffering from high health insurance costs and we as conservatives have been.
Offering ideas to bring him -- cost of insurance to make it more affordable and portable.
If -- across state lines -- small businesses negotiate together.
-- -- and bring down rates now we as representatives have been offering those ideas from the very beginning but.
Democrats control the house absolutely and I have to.
Disagree with a reporter who is on just before minutes and we've been talking about this -- -- year.
We as conservatives representatives have tried.
But Nancy Pelosi the Democrat leadership have refused.
To even talk to play at all today right congressman here's essentially have the chance for -- -- today I don't on television and everything else and people to sell out just for show but.
It's a chance to put forward the ideas which ones can be realistically.
Accomplished as the Democrats say that across state lines thing is included to some degree in the senate bill that -- little further there that's the starting point right you bet absolutely we're grateful that we're talking it's always important in this stuff.
On an issue is complicated and important is this that we.
Work together to find a solution to bring down the cost of insurance and make it affordable and portable for people liability perfect protection for doctors.
His -- is something vitally important -- we understand.
Yeah it's important to remember that that Democrat leadership has total control over the house they haven't they don't need a single Republican vote.
And they haven't talked to us at all so that's been very.
-- very -- if you understood absolutely that we as conservatives also want to focus on jobs we need to secure the economic prosperity the nation and grow jobs cut taxes and cut spending.
Let me ask you remember -- -- second one before I do that congressman just the the in the big the big picture criticism of Republicans and the Democrats have made is the and you've heard this of course that the party of know that you're out there really to defeat the president had his agenda not succeed as opposed to driving your own agenda forward.
-- It is not fair to some degree that the just and blocking for the sake of blocking now.
We can't block anything we know we're we're in the we're in temporarily until January we are in the minority.
And the Democrats can pass any any bill they want anytime they want and they have done so.
Nancy Pelosi has run this house with -- on this thing since like you filibuster just about anything we -- you know -- -- let's -- -- -- on -- I don't know the other side of the house and you're in the house represented that I get that sense though.
And now Republicans cannot block -- -- -- until Scott Brown came along -- -- they -- -- sixty votes so we -- not obstructionists in -- we've offered constructive thoughtful ideas based -- common sense from our constituents the president and the Democrats -- -- the country.
They've ignored the conservative were Americans that we represent.
And it ignored the need to protect this nation's economic growth and they're ignoring job growth okay.
That's our real concern is too much spending too much debt too much taxes let's focus on the economy.
And deal with the problems of health care reduce the cost make it affordable and -- and portable.
All right affair and a conversation -- to make comebacks in 12 if that's okay -- -- to balance this out a little bit and bring Ellis Henican and Newsday columnist Fox News analyst who supports the democratic plans.
The democratic plans on the health care.
-- debate reaction to what the congressman saying if the Republicans basically say hey we've been presented these ideas nobody's listening to us -- there risks for both sides in this in the risk for the Republicans is that they appear as you described as the party you know with the people who just it is in a moment in America without some genuine problems they health care system.
Just vote no no no no congressman coalition I guess he -- -- from the party noted the party -- with a big exclamation point at the end of an if if the conversation today it reflects the tone that we just heard.
There's no chance of all bipartisan -- what reason people think because because I think that the confidence some of his colleagues thankfully this is not true of everyone in the Republican Party.
But believe that there were political benefits to simply obstructing any kind of reform and and that's what we've seen until four votes that are literally every single Republican will not not not a single vote -- many of these publicity just ideologically to -- -- it.
It in -- that could be but it can also be that they -- generated some.
Effective political -- -- -- -- congress and you're not produced any result you're obviously every two years in the House of Representatives up for reelection so Ellis races this point that the reason the Republicans are fighting.
Here it's not because that as I brought up because of ideological differences but because hey listen.
We need to get -- we need to gain some how house seats and some senate seats at mid terms points had.
First of all week in the minority blocking thing we're not a position to block anything they don't need our votes they -- -- asked our input at all until today is the first time.
Nancy Pelosi and the Democrats have included Republicans -- any kind of discussion other than committee hearings are on the house floor secondly we have -- conservatives been offering.
Very constructive ideas from day one and we would very much like to solve the problem of -- -- control health insurance.
-- how happy -- that by the way how to how what's what's your cost solution on this because.
The only thing I'd say to that is the CBO estimate on the democratic bill.
And when you compare -- to I guess the year that the Republican version that was put forward actually said that the democratic bill would reduce the deficit by more if you look at it over the course of ten years.
And other assumptions made there.
But you know I've just done that the estimate along the CBO estimate the Democrats are doing more on cost so no well certainly the first of all the president's bill is a press release that CBO cannot even you have -- -- the senate bill the senate bill that already passed in the senate okay let's talk about a hundred billion dollars plus over ten years in terms of deficit our guys are gonna look at bill with a lot less over ten years deficit reduction.
We as conservatives would approach this were common sense perspective focusing on the problem which is -- cost of health insurance.
We would have first of all go after the fraud waste and abuse in Medicare and Medicaid.
That is we've hit we've seen expenses seven Saturday -- -- billion right away you we -- then make insurance portable.
And more affordable allow people to buy insurance across state lines allow small businesses to.
Tool there but -- negotiating power together so they could bring down the cost of health insurer was that first.
Medicare Medicaid reform so what else to react to this what does that mean raise the retirement age or because you're right everybody does something's gotta be done on that long term otherwise.
We run out of money as a country not tomorrow but at some points of what we do Medicare Medicare.
Medicare and Medicaid to reform it.
What we did we start first of all by going after -- I said of the fraud waste or abuse the system right well it turns up far -- Iraq Paul Ryan.
Of Wisconsin -- has laid out are very thoughtful.
Alternative that he has been working hard to gather support for.
In the house.
He -- he will be the next chairman of the Budget Committee come January because I expect we're gonna see a tsunami.
In this next election sweeping out liberals and electing conservatives.
And I've done my best to avoid same Republican or Democrat because of the economic problems -- in the nation quite frankly -- what.
-- most concern us as conservatives we look at the -- of the control and spending and cut taxes.
And do what we -- to reduce the cost of health insurance while protecting your privacy of the doctor patient relations.
-- that's a big point -- philosophical the right and let -- make your point on that because you know as a congressman says Medicare and Medicaid reform is something at some point.
That we have to deal agreed in and to do what we have to be serious about that you know things like what I brought up raising the retirement age -- As the congress the says cutting out costs and and and fraud abuse and if we don't do that.
Go broke and we need money need to solve -- Medicare and Medicaid programs.
CF if I was on top of the program something like that.
That may be one eats into it I mean how would say though that that she answered that Connell is the kind of conversation about bipartisanship that we can expect -- what we've just heard.
Physical game difficult and emotional issues in a congressman and an opinion or on it and try and scare people what does that mean -- may still -- -- -- sorry that what what what what what did you just hear there that you think is pandering if is the belief that somehow or another we cannot solve these problems that it violates the fundamental principles of American providing healthcare for people who needed -- a decent society.
There's nothing we can do to the tens of millions of Americans who operate without health insurance.
-- when children are sick we gonna keep having to drag into the emergency room death about the worst place in the world to get him health care I -- England only.
Of priorities are covering more people are really want to run cheering on his second Nokia and the congress one last chance congress and congress and to respond to that is to say.
This is just -- I -- not defeatist but pandering by saying hey we can't get anything done here to cover more people which is clearly a Democratic Party is -- a Republican priority.
I'm not sure what I had never set any of that I'm focused on solving the -- insurance affordable and portable focusing on the immediate problem.
Giving liability protection for doctors against frivolous lawsuits.
For going after the from the -- in the abuse and that will immediately make insurance more affordable for people in the meantime we have got.
To stop spending money this nation is being driven into we're gonna become Greece if we do not cut spending and cut taxes and that can only happen with a new conservative majority.
In January unfortunately this president this congress has spent more money in less time than any congressman -- and a lot.
Conservatives speech is not black -- -- found we will -- don't know obviously had a conversation without turning it into a political speeches there.
dean you know -- little -- consolation guards finally trying to solve something.
To get health care for the American -- -- use this as a political platform power this is that unfortunately.
So unless I am philosophical differences we wanna control debt spending cut taxes we wanna protect the privacy of the doctor patient relationship that's philosophical it's profound and that's where the country is and that's why you see Republicans in the ascendancy today congressman -- -- -- Texas.
