Governor Jim Douglas who fresh start of that private meeting with the president on the stimulus plan and -- governor I know you represented.
All the governors when you go in and talk to the president on these matters but.
How do you or your fellow governors in states like Pennsylvania and Oklahoma.
What do they say to you about why should we.
Have to get a wife who we have to pay -- what we're running our states on a balance basis.
Most of the states are facing real challenges of one kind or another.
The National Governors Association asked for two things from the economic recovery package help for Medicaid because the safety net.
Program demand is greater in a recession and help for infrastructure to rebuild America's roads bridges rails and water and sewer systems and to create jobs.
Obviously the legislation has a lot more components than that but if we can get back to the basics focus on those two elements I think it will be good for the country.
All right so what's shovel ready projects do you have in your state.
That are ready to go right now if you do get the money.
Well we have -- a list of transportation projects that are ranked in order.
And when we have about -- state budget every year we go down as far as the money goes and then we we cut it off.
So we have a long list of summer state project summer local summer road summer bridges summer Covert we're ready to go.
But -- backing stimulus though governor I mean you have to realize since you are -- the governor's charge for stimulus money to go to the states and remember many cities in this country.
Are also looking for federal money to help them keep that the train rolling down the tracks financially.
How do you go back and say OK the banks seek help homeowners need help but -- the state needs help that our cities and help as well.
A lot of people have their -- out to the president right now.
Well a couple of thoughts first of all we work with our municipalities in fact the number of bridges that I got in my budget for the next fiscal year has more for the towns and for the state because that's for the greater urgency is.
Secondly we're not really -- -- their hand out we're doing the heavy lifting -- governors are cutting budgets making very difficult choices.
Trying to resist tax increases which would would not be good during a recession.
We understand this is temporary help during an extraordinary time and we're gonna do our part.
Have we thrown the the towel out of moral hazard -- -- that completely out the window now about.
Stay within your means and we can't come with.
More money it just gives you overspent.
Well there's no question that the fiscal integrity of the country needs to be addressed as soon as we get out of this recession the mounting national -- is -- is a real problem for for all of us.
And secondly I want to be sure that states.
Put their budgets on a sustainable track that's what I'm proposing in in Vermont.
We don't want to rely exclusively on federal assistance we know that after two years this is going to be gone so.
We're gonna make the tough choices do.
Governor governor -- on a second what did you what did President Obama.
I promise you in that closed our meeting today.
We've been promised me anything other than his and of bipartisanship to.
Work together two find some common ground with governors and with the Republicans.
I think it's important that we all respect each other's point of view.
Recognize that not everybody is gonna get everything he -- she wants but to find that common ground and get a bill passed.
You know govern here fox we have a very close connection with their viewers and the people who reader blogs and on our web sites.
And more than ever taxpayers are saying I think more than any other network any other company.
Taxpayers are saying not just Wall Street -- Washington and the states and the -- said they completely tone deaf to what taxpayers -- -- I hear what you're saying that you're talking about fiscal probity what other governors are talking about that.
To my mind and to the viewer's mind.
No one is standing up for the taxpayer is solid so much of the taxpayers can take.
Well you're right the president is said and I've said that one purpose for this.
-- recovery packages so that states do not think about raising taxes.
You're you're correct that this is not the time to increase the burden on people who may have lost their jobs may have.
Lost their nest eggs were earning less money than they did before whose homes are being.
Foreclosed on we we don't need to raise the burden of taxation and that's why I think some assistance from.
The federal government this helpful right now.
All right governor Jim Douglas from Vermont governor great to talk T on Fox Business -- love to have you back.
