-- start -- season of 51 annual Daytona 500 just ten days away this year to time that NASCAR champion Tony Stewart.
Not just a driver he is now also a team owner Stuart left Joseph Gibbs racing to be co owner of Stewart Haas racing.
He's hired last year's Daytona 500 winner Ryan Newman to drive for his team.
And Stewart's won everything there is to win in NASCAR except the Daytona 500 so this is important for minutes ago.
I asked him if this would be the year.
You're starting year old business now is as as part of the team is co owner of the team.
What are the advantages and disadvantage of the -- starting in a down economy.
Well I think that disadvantages.
Obviously were when we went and what we've been doing trying to get sponsors for both teams and obviously.
We we were very fortunate and we've been very blessed -- you have Office Depot and old spice come on my car right away in.
And the US army came on Ryan's car really quickly also so that's.
That's been a huge advantage to us.
Obviously it's a tough time in the economy so it's harder event to finish out in the sponsors for Ryan's car right now about we're still working -- to have a lot of conversations with.
A lot of companies send so far that's going really well but.
It has also been an advantage from the standpoint of of hiring new mechanics and crew guys -- -- there there were a lot of teams that.
Had to downsize a little better or shut down altogether so.
It gave us of -- -- of about a thousand different guys to you.
Look for different areas and different aspects of the team that we were looking for firm new -- to fill those spots so it's it's been.
A big help from that side of it.
And of course when you start when times are tough there's no time to be lazy at all so -- you develop.
-- esprit de corps among those who here.
You're worker with that is that is unbreakable.
Yeah I mean it's it's been a tough time obviously for the guys that work.
At -- -- C racing before I got there you a lot of guys were worried about -- whether they were gonna have jobs at the end of the season end.
-- then there were a lot of guys that were released from teams that we're looking for jobs so once we get those people complacent.
You know got him used to.
Working in our system and how we're doing everything and kind of penicillin retraining -- -- -- him -- mindset behind why we're doing things the way we are.
It's been like -- finely tuned machine so that side of it's been really fun to to watch suited building processes -- watching all these.
You guys that came from different areas and different.
Organizations watching him from working together for the first time -- you -- had such a long and successful.
-- -- Joseph Gibbs and he's he's clearly one of the nicest guys in the world how tough was it to leave him.
It's like leaving family -- realistically I was with.
Joseph Gibbs racing for twelve years if you count the time the Nationwide Series so.
A third of my life I spent with Joseph and JD and you know it it's definitely a hard decision I mean it's.
It's leaving it's likely even home the first time I guess I mean you know that.
Your clothes are going to be watched every would -- you know your and your mom's gonna make your Victoria and then also need to Sidon.
-- believe and I got to do it on your own so you know but we've we've left on great terms and Joseph and JD have been a huge help.
Do the off season and you know they've been very supportive even though they didn't want me believe they've been very supportive of what we're doing then -- you know means the world to me.
But -- you know there's some other race of people like Kevin Harvick for example done the same thing you were who were drivers as well as co owners.
And you know they say that that the headaches.
Which you probably haven't really experienced yet will come online after a couple of months.
Why not just sit back be a driver have all the fun and and lead the business angle to somebody else.
Why not be a car -- I mean to have a chance to be like Richard Petty and Richard Childress Rick Hendrick Joseph Gibbs.
You know there's there's what you do you -- -- you'd -- if you quit driving race cars and you know this was a perfect set for a lesson in the great thing is we have.
Office -- come on board which you help meet with the business side of it to -- -- got to worry about the driving right now and then you know obviously Monday -- Thursday Emma.
-- a driver -- the owner you know Friday he's sending him on the driver so well you know I get the best of both worlds some people were even worried they saw you were lose a lot of weight -- -- sale may Andy -- work into award in this business but here you say it hasn't been through hard.
Now I trust me the little bit of -- like -- lose more so -- could work even harder apparently according to their theory -- Tony I gotta tell you might twentieth wedding anniversary is February 15 I say that because of course that's the David Daytona 500.
