There's no regulation motor sports and it's sunny Sunday's Daytona 500 no bigger name and race in the Joseph Gibbs -- former Super Bowl champ.
-- runs one of the most successful NASCAR teams it's called of course Joseph Gibbs releasing.
A short time ago he joined me from his Charlotte, North Carolina headquarters here's -- win.
Joseph Gibbs great to see how you feel -- -- -- guy again let's do some businessman was this a bit all right you've got it so first of all let's talk about building a team because.
Joseph Gibbs racing and racing is doing that like privacy along -- got a lot of young guys there yet -- -- got of course.
He cracked up on Saturday but he's still going strong so your.
You're kind of building focusing on the young guys -- -- It's a little bit David like you can get you can get some drivers appear like you get quarterbacks.
Now we're fortunate enough to get -- bush is a free agent last year but you also can draft guys you draft them that's really what happens enjoy got up.
Happens to be one that as a rookie.
This can be like starting a rookie quarterback in NFL is it's wild it's exciting home -- excited about it.
And it's going to be a big event but particularly you got a -- Kicking it off with a Super Bowl.
-- shouldn't get exact that Daytona five Bradford for the.
I think -- -- can't start any bigger than that what about the culture Joseph Gibbs because so many -- year old teammates say that that that cultures is like a family how do you.
How -- kind of orient these people to the Joseph -- way to doing business.
Well I think David that things have been involved him.
Are really had been NFL.
Motor sports bill in the business and all of that is what this team.
And that's people.
And so for us here we try and we China invests in our people.
And picking the right people is the key to success Francis -- -- -- Redskins.
The most important thing I have is what the players fit and I had the right players they may be -- go ahead and so.
I've been involved in sports.
So I think I know anything about and -- -- -- -- and -- fitness I don't know much about much.
Well I know the right people you don't win did not only go about getting -- right people but you know about building that sense of fact I in past couple days I talked to Bobby LaMont they have talked to Tony Stewart.
Both of them.
Talked about Joseph -- work -- would Joseph Gibbs like it was a family he is such special guy coming I learned so much from him and I know Tony has to and say the same thing.
It's like leaving thing -- -- realistically I was with.
Joseph Gibbs racing for twelve years if you count the time the Nationwide Series so.
A third -- my life I spent with Joseph and JD it really wise -- guys are king and key members.
We had a long run let Bob -- the Bonnie love Bobby.
Same thing with Tony Stewart it's hard to get that done pro sports stay together that long.
-- we had great history with -- one of -- two races.
Won a championship football club can you imagine that unbelievable and so.
We wish -- the best we're excited about -- coming on board.
We got -- bush at 23 got Denny Hamlin 27 we got a very young group of guys.
And more open we can stay together with these guys for a long long time in the future well and it's significant that Joey what god knows racing number two money.
Tony Stewart's old -- right.
And now people and all of us here everybody technically at our race team.
We signed joy we said we -- fifteen we had three years of working with them to be exciting for us.
Obviously Home Depot felt the same way.
And -- when we put him out there this weekend.
The tough thing for him as with a start -- of the Daytona 500 now that's tough.
Now we've been down there seventeenth has won once as I mentioned it's extremely tough.
Well and as as -- -- -- talked to Tony and and Bobby -- that Tony Stewart neither of them have won the Daytona 500 so it's a very elusive.
Victory is -- So many things have to happen.
You gotta go 500 miles together miss any wrecks that were out there at the crew -- got to make great decisions he got to have great pit stops.
It's extremely tough to win that race and we certainly have found that this last week to -- example we start off in the shoot out on Saturday night we had.
Three were a big cars two of homeland.
For certain part of the race that was only -- -- really.
Less than a hundred laps.
And in the end we wrecked all 30 this is so if it's it's extremely tough to get there now -- -- -- -- 500 miles yeah and by the way -- it's not really tough to win the Daytona five it's tough to survive in an economic environment like we're in right now I was talking to Tony about baton.
Sponsorships are changing course Bobby LaMont is now working with a dot com company.
The Big Three aren't doing the sponsorships they used to the Big Three car companies and so what's it what's it like with sponsorships these days is the economy so tough.
What they've ever by suffers right now particularly we survive the racing to do with -- sponsors.
And I take great credit -- though for us.
-- -- -- we had two of our biggest sponsors.
Okay we only have one year left on the contracts and what they did they analyze everything in their portfolio that they were marketing web.
Both those companies came back -- is -- luck.
NASCAR works as we want to expand for a long term deals with you.
But it's fascinating that when these companies are hunkering down like Eminem for example they figured that the best place they they cut away all the extraneous things but NASCAR is but one vehicle that they can't do without.
Well I certainly think we we feel that way about it.
You know highs mainly because of our fan base us fans found their loyal they're dedicated.
And I do think it's it's a fact that you've got a ten month sport.
This is -- six like abolished TM.
And so I thank the -- just as I look I got TV IR radio I got a fan base comment.
I got hospitality that the racetrack I got the drivers and I learned.
Different appearances this stuff for us.
It I think it just makes for a very effective tool for marketing -- and we're excited about that and you know and business.
-- all of us right now we've had to hunker down this have pictures NASCAR makes some decisions they cut out testing say -- millions of dollars.
So there's been changes we've all had a to look at it be very aggressive and what we're Dylan.
And I'm sure you see that all across the business world.
We do think in the end I think this is one of the great marketing tools and I think we're going to be.
-- -- come out the other side of this period that we're in right now and yet you imagine your fans -- course Eminem is looking for the most colorful fan that's kind of a nice promotion.
It is -- honoring the fans this is all about the fans they get a pick over toward what 44 week period.
The most colorful fan.
-- you may not be the most colorful person in the world but you're the most decent person and everybody just.
Loves you to death Joseph Gibbs I wish you the very best and in the Daytona 500 thanks a million.
David that's a nice is having column is milked us.
