Denver Colorado today.
Where he will sign the 787.
Billion dollar American recovery and reinvestment plan into law at the city's museum of nature and science now the US conference.
Of mayors has -- lobbied for billions to go directly to cities and has put together a list of what they call shovel ready projects waiting for a green -- Denver mayor John Hickenlooper and host the president today and has some plans.
-- since -- fun -- joins us this morning mayor thanks for being here.
Morning so tell us first of all how did -- Denver will benefit from the stimulus bill.
Well I think like the entire country.
Denver needs to create jobs first and foremost but but in creating those jobs we've got to look to the future to make sure that it.
Every investment we may -- it creates jobs but.
But build something that'll help our economy next couple years and more importantly takes our city takes our country in the right direction.
And I understand that -- unemployment rate there a year ago was four point 4%.
Today it is six point 3% a one of the things you guys are known for.
Is your alternative energy and green technology.
Is that why don't you think the president -- your state as the place to sign this bill.
Think that's part of it when he came out here for the Democratic National Convention I think that was a turning point in his conversation with America.
And certainly our strong green.
Economy right that new energy economy is going on here in Colorado and and any place in the country is part of it I think what.
What the president sees is that that conversation he had during the campaign with America that's got to continue and and people you know just start the stimulus is just that's just a stimulus it's really up to to us out in America and to the business community nonprofit community.
To make sure that this.
The stimulus works -- that we put it to the highest and best use and many ways that will be green and and new energy jobs speaking of which why the science magazine explain that to people -- -- George sparks who runs the museum was euphoric about it.
But that there's some serious technology there -- that could explain why he's chosen -- tell -- about it.
Well there's a second largest rooftop array of solar energy panels.
Although on the rooftop of the museum in nature and -- And I think in addition that it's a wonderful.
Context to be talking about these investments because against some of investments that that are being talked about it telemedicine.
We've got a big training hospital in the city.
And all these health clinics and now suddenly we're going to be able to make investments to get fiber optics and and re -- high speed medical attention so that from the that the expert at the teaching university they -- go -- to any of the health -- -- and actually help the doctor do really difficult diagnosis.
Those kinds of scientific.
Really announcing -- a museum of nature and science is almost perfect.
OK let's go back to second dubbed this the stimulus bill -- when you start do you think you'll start to see the money flowing and and and how -- you earmarking which projects get the funds and which don't.
Well again I'm not sure exactly how soon the money -- flow of it but certainly respect to see.
Within the next week's or months at the latest.
More importantly is the criteria by which we look at these projects it is critically important -- woods they said before it's got -- create jobs today.
But it's gonna help our economy next year and and it's got takes the right direction so we if we do -- -- -- -- -- in low income neighborhoods that's -- that puts people work.
And then down the road it helps save money for his -- -- panel as we know.
From many many studies that save -- money and in challenge families reduces dropout rates reduces domestic violence really.
It -- small amount of additional income can really make a difference and that down the road is reducing.
Dependence on foreign oil and I think -- -- our country more.
More stronger and more viable economically all right mayor before we gal I understand that this is an invitation only event -- is on the left.
But at that.
Well I know that I got I got two tickets to I guess so I don't think they're gonna be too many people who I don't -- to patsy told too many people so.
Mostly I think it's people that have.
Are connected with some of these new new economic initiatives and people that -- You know about having investments and helping gotten this stimulus package to this point so far all right -- mayor Hickenlooper is great having on the -- thanks so much for taking the time to join us this morning.
You bet thank you.
