Training is under way for Major League Baseball and while all eyes will be in Tampa today inland near me he -- hold a press conference to discuss -- -- of taking performance enhancing drugs.
The impact of the down economy on spring training is a -- of facts and stories from training US -- and ticket sales.
For Florida's grapefruit league in Arizona's cactus -- have dropped by 25% in hotels.
At spring training fight cutting as much as 100 dollars off room rates as reservations have dropped.
From my story I'm joined by a -- pardon me president of the -- this -- and Brian Barnes assistant general manager.
Of Roger Dean Stadium which holds -- I should say the Florida Marlins and St.
Good morning gentlemen Robert let me start with you first the cactus league game is just over about one week away.
What kind of impact anything in terms of pricing and ticket.
Yeah same thing good cells overall.
I won't say this spring training is recession proof but it certainly.
Is recession resistant.
We have more games this year than we've ever had so as a percentage we maybe down that actual -- of cells are doing quite well.
And Brian for you guys that -- for a -- me you know compare this year from last year I understand I think you guys have more games as well to.
But -- -- contained in the end things -- sponsorship all that kind of stuff walking through that.
We've seen you know like like Robert had said you know we we are having more games is here.
We we expect when all said and done on our early projections to.
Probably draw a few more people but if -- with the benefit of the that's for -- six additional games.
From a sponsorship standpoint I mean.
-- sponsors are out there we know that is just a matter to -- a bit more of a challenge this year to you know kind of uncover every sponsor and and and looking high and low form but we do believe -- the sponsorship is out there is just -- matter of finding it.
And Robert walked me through what some of the local hotels and in doing this welcomes people just are traveling a lot last.
How are they trying to incentivizing people to come out for spring training.
Well as travel is down across the nation you're seeing a drop in the hotel rates and -- someone who.
Perhaps came to spring training last year is going to find.
Better rates than they dead so -- there is some value in spring training packages this year.
They're still are a lot of people who are coming spring training that's still a very very important part of many people's lives to.
See if their team is -- go all the way this year.
And Brian are you seeing some of the similar things as well that you expect people still -- turnout but that the packages will be that much better.
Yeah I would agree on that I think what we've seen from our facility standpoint is less commitment on on thinks it's a season tickets so we expect to make that up in terms of just people coming out on a daily basis two games in -- walk across out.
And I -- just.
-- find what talking about dollars and cents would only bring to it -- to that area.
To our our clubs to -- county it's it's somewhere in the range of in between thirty and forty million a year.
This what our economic impact is here at our facility.
Robert I understand in Arizona that brings in as much as 300 million dollars to the area.
When you look -- in terms of some of the things that you need to do to get people there.
Are are you changing its strategy.
I don't know the word change in the strategy so much we think that again because of the extra games.
Our probably our per game average is going to dip slightly.
-- our total attendance is going to be and I think that we're going to see fans coming.
The last half of the season is still shaping up very nicely the first half is always the hardest to get attendance because.
There's more of the forty man roster and rotation and people are coming out quite as fast.
Some interesting Brian before we go A-Rod is said to address the -- yet today about the steroid use.
What impact you think that hasn't spring training I mean I'm I'm sure they'll be a media circus there that's for sure.
If he had I would agree with that you know it's for the last few years we've had you know I think there -- -- -- it's going to be a little bit of a distraction.
I don't think it's gonna keep people away we have had.
Similar you know issues the last few years with us there -- talker around this time -- but it.
I don't think it's gonna drive people -- but I do you know obviously it is a distraction over in Tampa right now.
All my brain and Robert gentlemen thank you very much -- -- this morning.
