Just one of the host of the Republican National Convention he was almost in it Minnesota's Republican governor Tim Pawlenty was on McCain's short list for vice president before he went with.
Alaska Governor Palin and governor Tim Pawlenty joins us right now.
From Saint Paul, Minnesota governor think he's so much for joining us this morning.
Delighted to be with you there's no silver medals in this contest but I'm.
Grateful for the position I have in Minnesota and I think Senator McCain made a great pick.
So last night -- got things off to the start after the good stop story kind of died down a little bit if you had to -- report card.
On -- one how does the McCain camp look.
Well I don't think it's about the McCain camp -- good stuff said in an I was going to be an issue for our fellow citizens on the Gulf Coast Senator McCain realize they have to put first things first and that is to make sure the response effort in the concern the focus the care was directed.
At those folks in the Gulf Coast and may need some help so I think it was appropriate to set aside -- partially set aside the convention Monday night.
And that was the right thing to do in our back on track with a good evening last night was senator Lieberman and Fred Thompson delivering great addresses so I think it's.
Gone well now.
You know governor and there is a lot of focus on -- keynote speaker at this evening why.
It was Governor Palin the right choice for the ticket.
I think governor pay on is a maverick with a record of reform just like senator.
McCain is a maverick with a record of reform she amplifies his strengths in terms of energy issues in terms of fighting earmarks and pork barrel spending.
She's also somebody who's done a great job that.
They're reforming her state in a variety of ways and so I think she she shares senator McCain's kind of pension for being a maverick with a record over.
Warm yet we want the people we like a maverick one thing that they all need to be a maverick bonding you know pretty well -- the economy it's the number one issue that everybody continues to talk about what does the governor need to -- night and what frankly does the sender need to do in the next couple days.
Different to suggest to people that this is the ticket that is going to address.
The concerns about this economy.
-- Because you know the -- and ticket to opportunity and economic advancement of stability for Americans is their job and than most of the jobs now are being created or generated by entrepreneurial learning early stage -- smaller medium size businesses.
Senator Obama wants to take a bucket load of tax increases and dump it onto the backs in hands of our small businesses and that will not be good for our economy will not be good for our citizens.
In contrast Senator McCain has said -- We not only need to keep a lid on taxes -- don't statistically reduce them over time particularly as it relates to job growth.
And families and individuals so those -- that's a big difference as it relates the economy's not the only difference but as one of the big difference.
You know governor at -- to talk about those and it did that is -- tax opportunities.
Whether they -- capital gains are putting more money in our pocket.
-- sounds great on paper although you and I both know often times what you say you can deliver on the campaign trail.
And what you can deliver when you're an office have to shift particularly in this case because of the growing federal budget deficit.
A look get your thoughts on infrastructure because that is one of the -- -- obviously you had that tragic event with the bridge collapsed.
What can the campaign do now to listen we need those concerns about the infrastructure in this company.
With the growing budget deficit.
Yeah that's a great question and of course and beyond just taxes are other issues important -- the economy like energy like infrastructure like education so I hope those issues will be addressed and in this campaign season as well.
You know in Minnesota the legislature tried to increase the gas tax -- have cents a gallon increase the sales tax.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Most politicians most policy leaders around the country do not favor increasing the guest expert taken this time of really high energy prices were people are hurting so we're -- to have to look in my view and things like congestion pricing public private partnerships.
Funding for these capital projects and one last thing as more and more of us don't drive cars that are based on traditional fossil fuels -- we get into more hybrids more.
Flex fuel vehicles plug in Electric's perhaps some -- hydrogen fuel cells.
We can't continue to pay for our infrastructure just on the gas tax because we're not going to be buying as much gas as we have been previously.
You know governor we were talking about your state just about a half hour ago about the -- senate race between Norm Coleman.
And Al Franken in our proposed to be Al frank and when this state has largely been a blue state when he came to the presidential election how immune delivered this state in two months.
To John McCain and the Republicans.
A Minnesota historically has been -- very liberal place the land of Humphrey and Mondale wellstone and McCarthy but over time we've been able to make it more competitive.
I certainly -- represent -- -- it's a conservative state are red state but it's at least competitive advantage here still.
Is a bit towards the Democrats but with the right Republican candidate like John McCain or Norm Coleman we can win.
John Norm Coleman has been a great US senator he's a dynamic campaigner he's got a great campaign going.
And also -- is running against somebody and Al Franken is probably not electable.
You know governor before we let you go -- then you're you're one busy man out there.
Yet there was what's said about you when -- -- you have charisma and go out there on the campaign trail.
You know one thing we don't know about you that we should now I'm sure there's.
There -- -- -- about and you know that your comic behind the scenes.
-- -- I know I lead lead a pretty -- standard life like yes but.
The one thing is -- like to -- play hockey gets a little different disposable for much of the country a favor perhaps not hockey place and I don't have some -- -- -- usual thing that I do that perhaps would shock you or give you that.
Shock entertainment value.
Are right well we the good news is is that hockey season's coming up pretty soon governor Pawlenty I want to thank you so -- are joining us.
And at best of luck over the next couple days will be watching very closely.
