Hello and welcome to -- -- much Jeff Flock we've got an interesting story for you this time take a look at this.
This is an old school aluminum case it is made by the aluminum case company.
In Chicago Illinois and even more interesting that that case is the story of the people -- own this company Olympic game -- -- and her husband Ken McDonald.
Decided after working for your lives in corporate America kinda.
To get your own business and get your hands dirty what possessed you.
I think -- short story is is that we were tired of coming on the complaining and to each other about.
How we had to deal with morons all -- -- at that point we decided we were so Smart we do it ourselves and now these guys in the background complain about Q when they go exactly excellent that is a better way to go.
You did this by cashing out all of your 401K all of your savings basically putting it all on the line.
What were you thinking there.
Well one we needed to do that in order to buy it.
But we weren't thinking that we were quite capable of doing this we were excited to get into manufacturing wanted to make something after.
Having sold services all of our lives.
And to build a business that we could possibly pass -- -- So you had success obviously success in the corporate world we look at what people are making.
Did you actually this is a metal fabrication business you make these old school aluminum cases.
Lot of people think that the whole market has gone to plastic cases you saw.
A potential here what did you see.
Plastic cases are very big in the marketplace there's still a spot -- aluminum cases and to make an aluminum case with a one -- you know is a bit of an anomaly.
So the way that our company does it is but this unique in the marketplace.
So there was a number of different opportunities available -- -- with because you've got some I examples of what you do here and the great thing about this.
You you talked about you know going to China for example.
A lot of people can do things in China and I love to see all of this.
The equipment that you've got here a lot of this stuff looks like old equipment.
But -- working is working right I mean the technology hasn't changed all that much.
Now the technology hasn't changed -- part is what you have to do to actually make the part.
What has changed as a way that you have to think about making the part -- be rough evening.
Well the biggest differences is that there's a lot of automation that's involved let's say today -- rather than.
Sixty years ago when the company was originally started.
You right so you needed to think about how that all fits together just take a look at some of the examples of some of these cases.
Is he said it's kind of old school but a lot of times people look this people love the durability on this threat.
The durability as well as the lightweight.
Also if they'd want medal.
You've been around us aluminum.
How to get -- we walk around here wanna get more into your mindset and what you were thinking.
You started looking for a business.
Maybe the worst possible time I thought that she would be thinking about buying a business and expanding.
But actually whether you were saying you thought actually that was a good time because you -- get more bang for your buck.
And I absolutely.
And we had girls when we started we didn't want a different we didn't wanna do retail we wanted to do manufacturing.
And in looking at that in order to basically replace our existing in.
We needed a fairly substantial manufacturing firm.
This company had at a great history.
But -- that I'm not only with the economy going now that the owners were older they were looking to -- they act like a lot in their business it was on the down side anyway.
You came NN.
Brought them things like own systems and computers and even have a website.
And -- at an email and point man.
An amazing that a business what you bought three years ago didn't have them exactly.
But again it was they had purchased -- company in the thick.
And it would fall and they just kept going with what had worked for them.
And -- were -- -- wanna get your take away.
You know we all of our viewers are in corporate America they may be thinking like -- thinking I'd like to do something different but I don't wanna do a franchise I don't wanna do something that.
Other people maybe did.
Give me -- take away for them and vice guidance what what you said.
I think as always it's basically just do it.
Do your research make sure that you have real good understanding.
What you're looking -- what your market is access the market potential and things.
You've been pretty successful it.
And we -- leave you perhaps here -- conference room with a look at what these cases look like.
As we said their old school.
But there are nice and -- And they can customize -- anything that you need out of an indication that manufacturing here in America still going strong.
Thanks for watching conference through my Jeff Flock here on the Fox Business now.
