One of the biggest challenges -- -- yards and one of the entrepreneurs face is taking risks in the face of uncertainty.
But -- to -- and bestselling author Jonathan fields says that -- can be turned into fuel for innovation day.
He's with us in studio today Jonathan thank you so much for being here pleasure so first -- what I think is really interesting is you say uncertainty.
Can be felt as pain redeeming.
-- in our brains are literally wired to experience taking action in the face of uncertainty as on ease with as physical needs and -- -- get a physical response to most of us actually.
Kind pull ourselves back from that we don't have that feeling anymore which is the opposite of what not Norris -- it.
So you're feeling really just an easy about -- -- and taking any type of risk so you have a couple of elements to kind of help.
Entrepreneurs out the first is -- -- Yeah I mean one of the big things on the north and pretty much everybody does is when we have to actually take action bits of uncertainty we -- -- doom and gloom scenarios and tell ourselves this is gonna bomb we're gonna lose everything people hate us.
What you wanna do as you may not be able to change of circumstance but you've changed the story that you're telling about the circumstance.
So instead of paralyze yourself and mobilize yourself.
By asking different questions you know what if I succeed and then paint that picture and that's the one -- -- -- So is it just kind of a more positive outlook on the story instead of feeling like you're in this dark hole.
Pretty much I mean our our brains also have -- -- from the negativity bias which means that we go towards the negative story probably is a survival instinct.
So what we need to do is keep telling -- positive story the possibility story to counteract that and then to override it -- making that a reality.
Okay and you also say to do this we should mad at saint.
-- well I'm not the same time -- you might want to but -- meditation is actually one of the things is tremendous amount of research about it now.
Literally rewire your brain so that you experience having to take action we don't know Huffington and with much more equanimity and much more he's much more common you actually make better decisions along the way so a daily practice.
It doesn't make the change immediately but over time it really changed we experience.
I'm not sure people know how to meditate I mean what does that entail just closing your eyes and thinking positive thing you know a lot of people have his knee -- we actually it's woo -- it's yet our -- religious and some -- -- these -- it's really not there -- a lot of different ways to get to that place but.
They can be fundamentally as easy as just sitting for a few minutes and just observing your breath noticed sensation on your breath as it enters and -- your body.
And people think that -- -- -- simply couldn't do anything.
You have to really an exercise and me I know we're also must exercise anyway that you say that helps relieve stress a lot you have little counter intuitive so what we know -- exercise affect our -- but what a lot of people don't know -- exercise literally also really strongly affect your brain allows you to function and more calm way and make better decisions.
A -- and the last.
The last one is sprinkled shrinking it down so when we have a big thing looming in front of us terrifies us that paralyzes us who -- do -- take that thing.
Children -- 10205000.
Smaller things and then address each one individually.
And it it's a mobilizing -- because we don't becomes paralyzed by the smallest -- to work with -- you're just breaking -- Your tasks -- and and it seems so simple.
What we experience it radically differently and and when we see okay they're little things to do it just allows us a lot more freedom.
And allows -- to take smaller risks along the way that add up to -- -- certainty of success.
But what did you just have one -- -- I mean if you decide I'm better quit my job and start a business.
How do you break that down into small -- Seattle actually it's a great example because you -- -- -- -- probably a thousand small pieces you know I'm gonna quit my job well and why do you wanna quit your what do you wanna start.
You know like what -- the elements are vigilance -- what are you gonna have to do to get from quitting my job keeping my insurance testing the assumptions about the businessmen making it work.
-- take each one of those nuggets and see if you can one little experiment to see what works what doesn't.
