I -- there's a new plan in congress to fix the post up this this go from one mess to another.
It's being spearheaded by the powerful chairman of the house oversight committee Darrell ice that -- some of the proposals are supported by post office management.
But the unions no surprise wants none of it so that Canada post office stopped believing red ink or will it ultimately need a taxpayer bail out.
-- Brooks the policy director of public notice is with us now.
I mean the numbers are staggering do we really even need that post up if at all at this point.
Well I think the post office does play a very vital role but there finances are an awful shape and they have to do something.
To address this -- -- get too far when they try to cancel Saturday delivery there's other proposals out there now that have cluster boxes so the Mel isn't delivered.
That every house but -- core location and a neighborhood like many apartments today but they need to look at serious ways to get their finances under control.
Close up as close sixteen billion dollars last year.
I don't know how to get a dig himself out of that and -- your point about this no door to door delivery just put it like a box at the end of the street.
Really that would save four billion dollars that's -- -- -- -- why not then.
Well it's so hard for the governor to make changes and that's unfortunate.
I think they should go a lot further.
I think god they should look at private companies like Al box and Austin, Texas.
It actually stands a -- a digital copy of me imagine how much money the post office could save.
If they only gave you what you really need it like a hard copy magazine and other things you -- good read on your off pad those are the kind innovations we should be -- for our from our government.
But unfortunately the government's not the fastest at innovating.
I mean I know most men will disagree with me but I don't need a Victoria's Secret catalog four times that we -- that's probably how many I get at this point.
Didn't -- Saturday delivery are item over that.
Didn't didn't know door to door thing IMAX economy over that to the pension and benefit overall though is always the stickiest point how to get through that.
Well they've got to have an honest conversation with each other they have to admit.
Their finances are terrible they cannot continue on with these very generous pension benefits.
And now they need to really reach an agreement to.
Have the Postal Service on the same type of retirement that many Americans are on like 401 -- and not these guaranteed job benefit plans.
But the unions I mean they are gearing up they're gonna fight this tooth and now.
And we're -- -- -- Saturday mail for a long long time because of it and then what happens it goes completely busts right.
I think we're headed out on that track -- -- mean there was not that long ago where the senate did pass a bill to reform the post office it didn't move in the house.
I still have hope that they'll do something but.
They continue on down this path I think they are gonna go bust.
And there either have to have serious reforms or look to the government for bailout and I think that's an awful precedent.
Yeah we have a statement from the American postal workers union and they said the bill would be devastating.
Haven't devastating effect on the Postal Service honestly devastating.
I think that's a stretch -- me I think.
Unions too often -- at protecting jobs instead of looking to how to maximize a workforce of me.
We don't necessarily need all these postman going -- door can't they be doing something in the economy more effectively and perhaps make more money that's they should be doing.
And one of the I think the most important parts of the reform act postal reform act of 2013 is it prevents the taxpayer bailout it is high time we've had -- -- like this put.
In a reform act but again.
President has shown we bail people out we bail things out it's probably not gonna go like the post that was not going to be the one that we don't.
Well you know they can put that in the bill now in -- -- congress down the road doesn't have to follow that I think that.
Not -- and about post service would be good places -- but if they continue on this path they're going to be depending on American taxpayers and that's wrong.
-- apps they read about that.
-- -- thank you so much for taking the time have you with us thank you.
