Jonathan Bender may have had hoop dreams after being bit by -- for -- -- he decided to change paths.
And -- was treated by the NBA right out of high school but left the game after seven years due to debilitating like he.
During his time off he helped create the GB intensive trainer and today is looking to take its products nationwide.
Time you very much for coming and us.
Thanks -- hadn't -- you became an entrepreneur you're my kind of falling into it after retiring from the NBA due to this crippling -- Tell me about your first retirement.
After having injuries around the triple -- six I started to really have epiphany moments about what I was gonna do later.
3040 years no what I'm I'm going to be doing because this could be over and and it's.
And that's the time and I really sort of take a look at our owners.
And really start to investigate what they did outside -- basketball -- it was phenomenal.
Things that they did their primary business was not best -- -- -- play.
And that may need to focus more -- what I needed to do outside the game so I didn't really you know.
Feeling the real regret about leaving their first because I feel like I needed to get out here really learn you know and -- -- life.
Absolutely but then he did come back and -- for the knicks hit and retired again so do people think you're crazy for leaving the NBA that's kind of the end goal for so many people.
You have good you know -- -- welcome from.
So we look at the NBA as you know that is the top.
That is the top goal we don't see anything else but as I got out there I had opportunities the other -- intensity of avenues that would even hired -- in the NBA.
And I'm very competitive.
So I want to -- you know who's pulling the strings how do -- -- to that next level.
And only way you can get there is -- creating a process and owning something so that's the product so.
So tell me about how your JD intensive trainer works.
OK so it's for joint pain lower back hip and knee pain so basically as apparatus that you strap on you don't have to learn anything was put it on and you walk.
But anybody -- having any type hip pain or are knee pain it -- those joints in re -- the -- to the Mosul the blue muscle.
-- -- -- The the quad muscle builds muscle that you need to engage to protect those stories.
What was the process.
Actually you know all three -- and creating -- yes so I actually wanted to create something for myself.
That I could use out when I was doing my basic training when I'm -- basketball like movements -- -- -- and to adapt to.
You know my natural movements so I set out in the -- when -- how people walking their mechanics and it just came to ever into the store put some things together.
They look like.
Complete crap but it definitely worked and that's how we get to where I am a -- that's and you get these designers and you get everybody else involved right.
Still you're still very -- and you haven't sold very many products and are you fearful at all that your retirement from.
And gold and BA may have been seen.
Well NBA first -- -- -- because that can be a win like this and so we have to create another process that I can do when I'm 8090 years so.
It's still create a legacy for the generation that's coming -- me.
So I feel like it's definitely not conveying this something that you know -- put me here for a reason.
And continue walking and -- my legacy.
And what -- your growth projections for the next year we're looking to do a million have premiums are this year and we're well aware.
Great and many pro athletes wind up going broke soon after retirement that you say you are determined to not become another statistic -- to fall into that category so how are you planning to do that.
I think the -- them -- -- right now it's the perfect way to go because you have to create something else just like I created.
You know myself in my product which was -- talent in basketball I have -- something else outside of that particular talent and and bring it to the world.
I mean if you look at you know and doctor that's been training always like to become a doctor can you say -- -- Next Tuesday you can't get doctor anymore and he's -- follow the same -- as the you know -- the NBA athletes than just professional athletes as well.
So I think it's more courageous move that new thing that new.
Product that new service and making -- an extension of you and helping others and I think you can deal -- below fair.
And you are also a small business he had just yourself and one other worker and your medical device are you concerned at all about how the Affordable Care Act could potentially impact your business.
No no I'm not the end you know I heard about it not -- opponent and I don't think it's gonna affect this at all because we have a very good margin.
And -- that we are small business so we don't have we're very lean a little have a big.
You know big amount employees -- over here so we -- -- keep it real lean when -- keep on margins that you know very wide.
And I think would be OK we'll be good for those you know things like that come down -- -- And so what's next for your product -- ahead.
We're we're gonna try to definitely pushed -- product out nationwide and a worldwide will begin orders from the UK and Canada and Australia.
So we're just gonna keep.
Keep refine and outside keep refined enough product and -- as many -- -- we can't.
Well best of luck to you and thank you so much for joining me -- thank -- -- From New York -- Rogers fox -- -- dot com.
