Forget college that's what some students are saying more of them flocking to certificate programs instead for a faster and cheaper education.

Welcome to the show it's great to have you here just how popular are -- certificate programs and why are they becoming such a big thing.
Well -- we're very flexible number one number two they're very much more prevalent -- people realize.
18% have a certificate.
And number three they actually can be combined with a higher education degree.
And then you can get more -- you can get a two year degree and certificate and even a few people.
Get a BA and then get a certificate so now these are occupation -- oriented programs that really are tied closely to specific jobs.
You know it's interesting you're senate sort of critic of these and sound why it's what -- -- the negatives that people don't see from the outset.
Well the Kindle -- certificate is.
-- finishing the program and be getting placed in -- where appropriate job.
Since these programs tend to be very.
You really don't get a lot of general skills so if you don't use those skills and only about -- You know just a little bit more than half really get placed well so this is -- a very important issue.
And so if you don't do that you really don't get that much pop from this some kind of training well -- are the institutions addressing those concerns.
Well trying in -- and things change I mean now and we we we think they can do a better job for.
I -- not continue to be put under pressure around.
There is not a program a Department of Labor called -- full employment.
Which they're trying to evaluate each program and each school to identify those programs that are successful.
Both educating and placing their students and then that would be a way to you know well get rid of those anonymous success -- It for this government program to figure it out but in the meantime let's talk about what people are getting out of these programs what Clinton.
-- areas are they studying and what kinds of jobs are they getting in the intro we said people are getting some really good good paying jobs what are the.
Jobs well obviously the IT field you know so if you're an IT person and you get a certificate there and you get a job -- that.
-- you'll make more than most people with a two year degree and even more than a lot of people with a BA degree.
But got more certificates are kind of more manually oriented airplane -- song.
Machinists have different sorts.
Bomb and then of course there's our office management.
Well you know it seems to -- if you get placed with the skill even though it's specific -- -- an auto mechanic.
You're always gonna have work that's not something that's gonna go away I think like a pretty good deal to -- it you know if that's the kind of thing you want to do particularly if if that's what you always dreamed of doing.
No question you know really want to build on your own likes and dislikes.
And then you'll be most happy and if you he'll bring more -- in the job and you'll get better at it and you know you -- career obviously there are some dead -- career but.
Most people have some skills can find a niche for themselves and in.
And you know I have a good career.
And how much -- these costs -- -- much more expensive than the warrior less expensive although much less expensive and for your degree -- certificates run from his.
Sure just three months to two years.
-- and it's and they pay what they cost depends on where you go -- about half a certificates aren't public Community Colleges.
And then it's very cheap just a couple of thousand dollars a year.

And then another half are done by these private for profit schools.
