-- Our first guests tonight inside the house caucus meeting.
He's one of those leading the way on the step by step approach to immigration reform.
Joining us now is congressman -- -- member of the Judiciary Committee chairman of the subcommittee on immigration -- member of the house oversight committee.
Congressman has always good to have you with us that must have been quite something to hear chairs break out -- what has been rather's old late.
Rather somber meetings when they caucus convenes.
I think you got allowed us here when he set I'll be brief.
But the second allowed us here was.
You know he reiterated what he has said time and -- again which is that the senate bill is not going to be voted on in the house.
If I knew I another language to say it and I would say it any another language so maybe our.
Friends in the -- -- would get the message but their bill is not going to be voted on in the House of Representatives we are going to do our own.
Build our own way step bust out.
It's been 27.
Years since the last four rate in the quote comprehensive immigration -- -- I don't know what the rush to do -- in the next 27 days would be.
-- other than a political rush -- what I cannot add this to close listening to it to Jay Carney.
And I have looked and looked and looked since I got to Washington for.
The comprehensive immigration bill that President Obama and the house and senate Democrats passed.
In 2008 in 2000 and not when they had control of both bodies of congress and the White House.
They didn't lift a finger on comprehensive immigration reform.
Which -- skeptics think that there are more interested in 2014 in the election cycle than they all are all real remedy.
We -- going to work our will of the house -- we're gonna -- responsibly.
Step by step and hopefully.
Engender public trust in the process.
It's that process will be -- regular order in the house there will be hearings there will be studious and rigorous.
Analysis of issues and and questions asked and there will be insistence upon answers.
Before public policy is created by the house.
As novel as that sounds and as unusual -- that is for us.
We have had four hearings so foreign remark go -- toward the amendment process went well until the late evening and that's the way it's supposed to be done if you have a better idea that the one propose.
Debate it was stability in fact and then take a boat.
You don't lump everything in together of the good the bad the ugly.
But not so -- -- throw some more money in certain states where you -- those senators to vote for that's not the way our framers set it off.
And that's not the way we're going to do what -- we have passed four bills -- -- judiciary.
Another out of Homeland Security the deals with the border there are other bills bills to calm and -- we're gonna let the house work its will.
And I think that's what the American people want -- think they wanna see the process unfold and not have -- deal caught behind.
A mahogany door.
It is it's exhilarating to be quite candid about the matter.
To hear you and to hear the leadership the other members of the leadership of the House of Representatives.
Say that this is going to be a government well -- a process well managed and the and the people served.
Rather than to see another effort by.
I once thought they were well meaning I have to say congressman I'm not certain that all the members of the gang of eight.
And this president are well meaning because it suggests that they.
If they are well meaning they -- they missed entirely the lessons of 2006 and seven which is the American people deserve far better.
On the important issues that that.
No matter to our sovereign they are destiny our our our lives as Americans and that of course border security.
And and immigration must border security must be present.
Immigration must be -- but it's got to be done sensibly and in the national interest.
You you all have decided to do it the right way I -- -- use the word again it's exhilarating.
Well -- -- was exhilarating for me -- was in that conference here.
My colleagues who have some very compelling stories.
About how their families came to this country.
And we are a nation of immigrants.
We are also a nation of wall that does not mean you can't balance -- -- with compassion.
I'm thankful that we have a compassionate.
Citizenry and that we live with compassionate.
People but we are about the respect for the rule wall.
And I don't know for the colleagues in the senate haven't noticed -- -- but there's a tremendous decrease in confidence in the institutions of government.
And it if nothing else people are gonna have confidence in the process -- hope we end up with a product they like.
But whether we end up with a product or not they're gonna have confidence in the process and again I don't want to repeat myself.
Well but there are so who believe that the president is more interested in the issue -- 2014 -- he is based solution.
And look no farther back -- his first term when he had Nancy Pelosi is the speaker.
And Harry Reid is -- leader of the senate and they did not lift a finger on comprehensive immigration reform.
Why -- they wanna -- before August stayed indoor for two years why do what the next 27 day.
It congressman cantor.
Made a very interesting point on Sean Hannity show last night saying.
That a President Obama -- can selectively in -- Obama care who's to say that he cannot be selective as an enforcement.
Are in border security.
In fact I will -- you that he's been extraordinarily selected Boston.
Forcing security -- our borders.
In immigration law itself.
This is frankly.
This means that he's going to have to change some of the rules of looks like if if there is to be a real reform which I think most Americans want.
But they first and foremost want that border to be -- as a condition preceding.
To any real change in immigration law that is equitable and humane to all.
And I think they want to make sure that this is the last time we go through this conversation as a nation and the only way to be sure of that is not to give the executive branch the ability to turn triggers on and off.
Based on political expediency so I can -- the president right now.
We're not gonna give him the authority to decide which -- all he wants to enforce nor secretary Napolitano.
You can add recess appoint -- to your list.
All of -- -- selectively enforces -- he wants to.
And look I'm about respect for the rule -- you don't like the law change it but is not his job to decide which ones to enforce and which ones not to an air Kantor's.
Parents who turned out it always good to talking with you or -- a safe first before I say.
Goodnight to you.
I want to say congratulations to you in the Republican leadership are quite a day.
Then I could -- very much.
