Well President Obama saying he won't do you any Wheeling and dealing to bring an -- -- -- -- Snowden back in the US.
Meanwhile the guardian newspaper today publishing secret documents.
-- the administration allowed the NSA to sweep up -- records showing Internet and email usage of American citizens.
Joining -- senior national security correspondent for Newsweek and the Daily Beast Eli lake welcome -- meet you.
Thank you very much for having me on the show so -- it.
It's that you -- something like I'm not going or something for sure I'm not going to be scrambling jets to get a 29 year old hacker climate hacker not a leaker.
He's playing -- DT -- he is trying to lessen the importance of the -- in case.
Assuming that there would be some negotiation with the Russians to try to get him extradited which is probably unlikely gonna lead to anything.
It's a Smart negotiation tactic to publicly say I'm not gonna make -- a huge priority.
Because you know by and let your adversary here you're negotiating partner across the table saying you know you're not going to be able to squeeze us for bunch of other concessions.
On things -- the Russians will be interest in whether that's missile defense or our policy on Georgia or any other things.
So I think that there is a sense that.
You know this could turn into a situation where you know.
The snow Laden's.
Fate will be determined by.
Larger geopolitical issues now with Moscow and I think that Obama simply saying you know he doesn't -- -- go down that road at the same time it looks like he's not singing.
You know from the same songbook as the rest of his administration perhaps we're telling us how -- been horrible this breaches and so I mean listen a week or two ago people were calling him a traitor right and now the president's calling him a hacker in this huge difference there -- -- I never thought.
We had any enough information to call him a traitor -- you -- the definition the constitution but.
That was you know we've seen it is a definite change -- So there are two things working here -- geopolitical.
Out common our relationship with so many of bar.
Colleagues are international peers and it's kind of concerning the way China's.
Reacted to request for extradition.
You mention the situation with Russia there's a situation with -- saying it is waiting favorable trade rights under treaty with the US and it's also offered the US.
23 million in aid for education about human rights what -- let's start here with this whole.
Referendum if you want -- caught that on what it says about the way the rest of the world views the United States right now.
Right now it doesn't seem like the united the United States is feared.
And smaller countries like Ecuador appear to you know basically -- taunting the United States I mean it reminds me in some ways though it's not unique to Obama.
You know after Hurricane Katrina Hugo Chavez you know offered all this aid to the people of New Orleans and things like that.
This is what petty -- spots will tend to do at times to try to.
Make themselves look more important among their own populations which.
You know in Ecuador.
There is a terrific buzz -- story which ironically showed the Ecuadorian government purchasing Israeli equipment to monitor cell phone traffic.
Inside their country so everybody kind of does it but the US discussed.
Well and then the other -- questioning here.
Is in regard to the danger of all of this information of the national security each of these leaks.
Glenn Greenwald told you and I seriously the fourth -- I wanna know why.
Glenn Greenwald -- -- -- league East -- of the guardian.
Is it because he Greenwald is now part of the story.
-- Glenn Greenwald is definitely part of Syria not -- look a gift horse in the mouth that's very did pretty well for us.
Thank you Glenn Greenwald for the interview the other -- there might.
Are right so basically grandma tells you it's -- -- -- -- copies of all these documents.
He chat with people all over the world and if something should happen to him he's gonna make sure that information is being -- -- -- significant danger here.
And then the president is sort of downplaying the risk I mean that's concerning now.
I don't we don't know the full extent of what's certain matters and we don't know what's on that we -- I mean but the assumption is and he's talked about this and Glenn -- -- a little bit about this with me is that -- -- -- technical blueprints for how the NSA.
Like actually gets the data out of the fiber optic cables.
And you know the locations of their stations.
And the real technical know how.
That helps the NSA set up what they call platforms.
A vacuum up a lot of this kind of data.
And so forth so you know Snowden.
We know what's there and did he.
Fabricated encryption keys within the NSA that allowed him access.
To servers that he himself as a systems administrator in Hawaii.
Was not supposed to access and do we know what else -- more information -- -- half.
We don't know because I mean the NSA director I think it's said that today.
He doesn't know the folks at what they have and and the FBI is investigating all kinds of possibilities at this point so.
The -- that's part of it which is the unknown level of of what he what he was able to get.
And then the fact that they are all over the Internet and that other people have that these files and they just have to give.
A password and then they're they're gonna be all over the place is -- kind of WikiLeaks situation but instead of you know difficult and sensitive diplomatic cables that are marked secret these are the most classified secrets in the US government -- signal intelligence.
And it -- student also got.
The other side of the NSA's mission which is information assurance and doing information security for the US intelligence community in the US military.
Well that is the super nightmare scenario -- -- -- there's no evidence that he has that but that would potentially mean that he would have things like you know the nuclear.
We gotta run but I'm just here if you like keeping the administration should be doing more things get this guy back to find out all of this information.
Know what would you I'm not entirely sure what's more the administration I don't I don't know what the more the administration -- do.
Really it's unlikely they could.
We could order a set a special operations raid in Moscow.
-- point Eli lake thanks so much thank you look.
