Welcome back it looks -- -- job for Superman at the movies that is the highly anticipated man of steel opens in theaters nationwide today and analysts are calling for big box office bucks.
For the sixth installment of the iconic franchise there's a lot to live up to here but there are more reasons to celebrate this -- Superman's.
The great American superhero first made an appearance in 1938 in a comic book.
How much did it cost -- that was just ten cents a copy one thing and dime.
Compare that to a record 2.2 million dollars which was the price tag.
For an ultra rare perfect condition Superman comic books sold at auction.
While the superheroes come along way since that racking up millions and millions of dollars of the box office.
The first Superman movie let's just put this into perspective.
Brought in a 134.
Million dollars in ticket sales and that was back in 1978.
But what it does better than something like.
In -- hangover part three today it's pretty impressive the franchise collectively boasts.
Over half a billion in profits throughout the year and Superman's latest man of steel.
We'll add more fuel to the fire with the movie estimated to bring -- again I'm thinking this is a really high and tall task here a hundred.
Million dollars in the opening weekend alone.
If you plan to see -- plan to see the man of -- this weekend chances are you'll be.
-- your 3-D sporting your sorting three a 3-D IMAX glasses it's a big weekend for the company.
Shares a buy -- have already been flying high so far this year will the new movie bring more super returns for shareholders.
But that's correct Foster -- entertainment chairman as president he's joining me now live from Los Angeles.
-- another Fox Business exclusive huge weekend for you guys Greg.
Let's talk about why we should see Superman and IMAX -- and the other theater because that's your challenge.
Well I think the first -- high.
And second of -- I think that the reason to see an IMAX is because the movie was really designed with IMAX and mind and that's because.
Our partner Chris Nolan who's the producer of the movie.
Our other partner Zack Snyder who's the director of the movie and Warner Bros.
have a long history -- IMAX and we've done some great successes with them that directed 300 Chris is not obviously all of the -- man movies and inception.
And we have a partnership that's been in existence for many many years and when they design a movie.
They usually put IMAX in mind.
And so this movie has all of the features that make IMAX.
China and thrive at the box office the sound is tailored for us.
Our screens are very large obviously the movie is a fan boy kind of audience -- film and it it's just a movie that I've seen it in IMAX obviously and and that -- just a movie that really works very well with our DNA.
Greg can you can't can you see them had a hundred million in this weekend alone I've listened that the world is littered the streets of Hollywood are littered with big.
-- beliefs in certain films of their opening weekend where they under shot it you think both spotters Superman can do this -- -- You know I think if it does.
Ninety million -- it does a 110 million it's sort of irrelevant I mean obviously everyone wanted to do as much as it can but I think this is a movie that has something going for -- that a lot of big blockbusters.
Try to have that often don't which is it's a really good movie.
And I think that what this movie will have our great legs.
It's a movie that I think will be around for a long time it's not the kind of movie that's going to be a quick.
One week wonder and out the door it plays really well it has terrific character is obviously the the big action set pieces are are.
And so I think that I'm I'm dodging your question -- I I'm not gonna tell you that's exactly going to be a hundred million dollars I think it clearly has a chance.
And based on the midnight grosses that were announced last night.
It obviously is well along along that direction but regard -- in that you know in the turtle vs the rabbit side.
I think this movie has hasn't quite a long a long run ahead of it.
What -- -- what's -- is expected takes them let's say it does do a hundred million what's your screen tech.
You know if we can if we can do.
Double digit percentage of the of the film that would be great.
You know we've traditionally we end up doing.
In the in the eight to 101112%.
Range we tried very hard not to focus on percentage because.
We reach a capacity issue.
We're our theaters are sold out in -- the vast majority of our theaters last night at the midnight shows were sold out.
We did about 1920%.
Of the box office last night.
Of -- 4000 screens or whatever was the played the film.
So capacity is often an issue for us on these big huge -- opening weekend grosses.
But you know that's what our hope is I think if we can do around 10% will will be thrilled but.
Regardless I think we'll just be close to capacity and that's you know we -- issue is we just need more seats.
You guys are also looking at at a -- your plan let's move from just this weekend to five years out.
The real issue that I find very interesting that I'm hearing people talk about is that IMAX is possibly getting into the personal entertainment system the home theater.
I can't imagine how much that would cost what are the plans on that.
Will at some point people be able to say I want to IMAX screen on on a smaller scale of course in my fancy -- house and how much would that cost me.
Well it's it's more than fancy pants it's it's it cost two million dollars and I think its own pockets -- -- millions after two million dollar face.
-- say you know it's a it's a -- relatively small market com.
It what it is is an opportunity for us to brain.
Home entertainment to a whole new level but to do so in very much of a Ferrari kind of way it's something we're exploring it's something that's generated a lot of interest.
From but from really really exceptionally high net worth people.
It is not in any way ever going to get anywhere close to replacing.
What our core businesses.
Which is a theatrical experience when we make a movie with a filmmaker.
Or are we get involved with a movie with a filmmaker that filmmaker is not making it for anything other than a big iconic.
Cinematic situation and that's what were all about.
Everything else is just sort of gravy but you know we have a network of about 650 theaters around the world we hope to grow it.
Like we have in the last many years -- five years ago we had a 150 commercial theaters.
Now we have 650.
So it took us 41 years to get to a 150 and in five years we've quadrupled it.
And all of that focuses on the -- theatrical cinematic experience.
Out of my home.
And that's really what our efforts are are being spent on but a home theater is kind of an interesting thing -- and it's exciting and where -- very pleased with the interest that -- garnered but we'll see it's way too early to make any kind of predictions on what ultimately is gonna end up becoming.
Every studio chief is on the phone right now they want one for their house all right thank you very much Greg will be looking looking forward to the personal -- system and also.
To see how the numbers for man of steel come out thank you so much for joining us.
Thanks -- nice to see you.
Greg Foster IMAX entertainment chairman and president by the way he was the chief of staff of the mayor of Beverly Hills when he was just sixteen years -- -- -- we knew he was going to be a leader close.
