America thinks there's there are held at Santa -- -- -- -- a lot like well the end of the year.
With all this momentum what roadblocks lie ahead joining us now -- journal's Washington bureau chief Jerry -- Jerry.
-- this should be somewhat symbol and yet typical Washington dysfunction.
-- it isn't.
I don't think you should expect anything to be simple and again tonight guys that and that this a big this is a big big bill is the first time in twenty years.
There's been a serious attempt to rewrite the immigration -- so I think it's a natural that people take it seriously.
And it is contentious now this this vote -- -- -- in the senate right now about whether to proceed with the bill that will almost certainly pass that guarantees a couple of weeks of debate.
I think most people think at the end of that couple weeks that this will pass in time for the fourth of July recess but it's not certain.
They're still a couple big obstacles in the senate.
One is an attempt by Republicans to toughen up the border security provisions of the bill.
They may or may not succeed in doing that if they succeed it may or may not cause some Democrats to fall away.
And that secondly this kind of a broader debate about whether what the senate is going to put together.
Can pass Muster in the house that's why -- house speaker Boehner said this morning which you just noted is important that was sort of indication he thinks is a -- done one way or the other.
-- -- is there a way to separate the one issue that a lot of people seem to be in agreement upon which is the foreign students who come to the United States to get advanced degrees.
Then have to leave the United States instead of working here helping our economy growth is their way maybe to pass that separately if the bill doesn't make it through.
Well there would be and you knew you could get the votes to do that because one of the tricky things that Democrats in particular don't wanna do that because they weren't looking for comprehensive package there.
Their fear is that if you pass.
Majors that allow companies get more high tech workers either by doing it that -- by allowing college graduates to to stay or by just bringing in.
More workers -- who gets -- skilled worker pieces.
That you remove the incentive for a broader immigration reform and so while everybody would be in favor of that.
It's hard to take this apart because then you have people picking and choosing you don't get a comprehensive reform done.
And Democrats in particular -- demanding a comprehensive reform so it it you know there's there's more than ample support for those measures to get more high tech workers here.
It's just that procedurally you probably gonna have to get that only as part of a comprehensive package.
Because that's -- -- there's a lot of other things that are really contentious right like this notion that we're gonna just do this sweeping.
Eleven million illegal is -- all in everything's okay not to mention it's gonna cost us billions of dollars to -- this.
Well it may have but on the other hand it they'll most of -- tell you it's going to be worth billions are long run to the economy is you're gonna get.
You know you get these high tech workers -- who create jobs I think there's a kind of -- consensus among economists and that.
In the long run you get more workers paying good earning wages and paying taxes to help pay for some of those Medicare and Social Security benefits for baby boomers.
And -- get more consumers if there legal about boards so there's a short term cost there's probably a lot of long term economic game.
One of the fears Democrats have though on that front is does this drive down.
Wages at the lowering the wage scale in the short run you can get the economic debate that'll go on all day long about that question instead of.
Well we run how to play this out what happens.
Think what happens is there there there is -- healthy debate there's probably some steps taken in the senate to toughen up border security I think Republicans want this to pass I think Mitch McConnell probably once -- the past.
Part of what you're seeing now as optics that it will sort of make it look like it was a good fight before -- I think he gets done one or the other by the end of the year -- with speaker Boehner on that track has -- stuff --
