Our top story tonight -- new quinnipiac poll finds that all the government scandals that are plaguing our nation of all of them the majority of Americans polled.
Think the IRS targeting conservative groups is the most important.
But the same poll also found that even more people 73% actually think lawmakers should be be paying less attention to the scandals.
And more to perhaps the biggest issue that matters to every -- -- economy.
Joining -- -- former Massachusetts.
Senator Scott brown and former Ohio congressman Dennis Kucinich they are both fox contributors gentlemen.
Makes you so much for joining me senator brown let me start with DO.
Why do you think it is that Americans are most focused on the IRS scandal is it because it potentially impacts their money.
Well they know is categorically wrong the fact that we.
You know obviously want the IRS to do their -- fairly and impartially and not -- take on any particular political slant but in fact they haven't done that.
-- what they've done as they focused on conservative groups and spend time effort and lobbying money through their union -- to try to single out these groups and is just wrong.
They need to reestablish the trust between the IRS in the American taxpayer.
And the only way to do that is to an -- -- -- independent investigation.
And potentially an independent prosecution.
I -- listening to -- -- do you agree with that and and do you think there was there is trust reestablish I'm not sure Americans really tough trusted the IRS in the first place.
And I you're absolutely right about that.
And there's always been this suspicion but when you -- injected into that the politicization of the IRS and focusing the IRS and -- people who whose politics may be different from.
The incoming administration.
That's something that's important to all Americans and you raise another point net is down okay we're focused on IR IRS.
But isn't it isn't our job really to make sure that the American people have more income.
That there's more jobs that the economy moves forward.
This is this is something that we can't take our eye off of now obsolete senator brown I -- at -- the government has are already proven that they can't do anything about improving the economy because we haven't seen a big jump there.
In all this time but there was something even deeper in the poll that disturb me even more.
They asked -- do you think the targeting of conservative groups was a decision made by civil service employees at the IRS.
Or by the Obama administration and 35%.
Thought it came from the administration have beaten number of people -- think it basically started the top what does that tell you.
Well the buck stops.
With the president and he is responsible for many of these -- season.
Through his rhetoric and other rhetoric.
The people's rhetoric throughout the administration.
Don't forget this also -- was added to the kind of fire in the flame is Jeanne Shaheen Schumer.
Bennett and frank and send a letter to the IRS asking them -- scrutinize these groups even more.
I can tell you firsthand when a member of congress sends a letter.
To an agency they pay attention that was completely inappropriate and I would argue is undue influence trying to influence an agency over a group.
For political gain -- for political purposes and it's wrong.
And not only that as this investigation goes on it seems like things look worse and worse congressman I would point out to you.
Just today looking at the number of trips.
That the IRS commissioner Douglas -- took to the White House during his time as commissioner 187.
I think we have a chart of this.
Showing that he went more.
-- -- anyone else.
That was basically visiting the White House all kinds of important people.
I mean you look at Hillary Clinton Janet Paula Tonto Tim Geithner all kinds of people that would have had.
So many different reasons to go to the White House and -- meet with staff there at the same time his predecessor went only wants to me this is a smoking gun.
What are your thoughts -- This week you know it's certainly the reason for his visits would be explored by and then various congressional committees are looking -- its.
I I might point out though that.
Well this has not been laid ahead in the lap of the president you do you really don't need.
They have conspiracy to have individuals who are acting in alignment with prevailing thinking.
As far as you know challenging the Tea Party I mean let's face it.
People should not be challenged.
With the IRS audits based on their politics that's rock and it looks like that's where this whole thing started where he's going to go it's anybody's guess.
Senator brown I say only half kidding way is either good or bad thing.
That lawmakers are distracted from doing anything about the car the economy and the debt ceiling.
And all of the economic problems in Washington I mean.
It should be should be facing these problems but they weren't doing a great job in the first place I don't know how sad I -- that that that -- -- looking at these scandals and sat.
Well bottom line is union allegedly senators had time to write letters and -- to try to get more scrutiny but more importantly.
But I was there for over three years we spend very very few few days doing anything regarding the economy and this is something that.
Had every reason Chuck Schumer they drive the train in the senate they could address these things.
The -- sent over many bills dealing with economic issues in the senate chose to ignore -- so gridlock is good that's what they want they want to be able to point fingers.
And and not get things done you right we have debt deficit taxes spending jobs national security energy and out keeping our kids and family safe from.
Terrorist threat says what happened in Boston and drug.
The rest of the country these -- things -- should be focusing on in the doing everything.
But you know gentlemen may not much for coming on we're out of time thank you so much that you're welcome -- in -- now.
