Our top story tonight family spending more on health care than food no kidding.
That's the conclusion of a stunning new report that also says employers are pushing more of their costs -- to workers.
There's some good news is well with us now doctor Scott got -- former policy advisor at the center for Medicaid and Medicare services -- Paul Howard director of the center for medical progress at the Manhattan institute welcome via both.
Doctor Scott I'll start with you -- wanna show some numbers here from this Millman study that was just released so.
Dollars this is for people -- -- okay.
This is more than the cost of going head to public college for a year isn't this -- -- control.
-- -- there is out of control in terms of the burden that's placing on families cost of actually slowed the rate of increase is actually slowed.
Largely because of the slow economy which only compounds the impact on families if costs aren't aren't throwing -- -- -- -- -- because people just aren't earning money in overall GP isn't very.
That's really not much of of a relief.
The other reason -- -- slowed is that more of the cost of health -- is being shifted to consumers as a result of consumer driven health care plans which is ultimately a good thing.
It's gonna make consumers smarter shoppers of health care and it's lowered the cost do well horizon not HealthExtras.
Scott I gotta tell you I'm not as big a fan as you are I understand the reasons for that bad.
I'd rather not have to bear the burden now that's cost policy you take a look at these numbers so.
We get that -- were -- bill for a regular family family of 48300.
Dollars your total employee health care costs for a single year.
9100 dollars so you're paying more for your health care costs and you are clear grocery bill what is going on here.
Well look at it this way -- you're paying for your groceries at least we get and make out the typical American is not paying for health care a year and a year out.
Health care costs for three quarters of all Americans average under 4000 dollars a year.
That means you don't close to or over 40000 dollars coming -- of yours your family's pocket one way or another.
To pay for health care that you're not using this system is -- vastly expensive and -- right we've got to turn more power over to the consumers to get more control over well.
The reality is if you shop around you can't save money doctor Scott to you let's look at some of these out of pocket costs we were just talking about -- play out of pocket 3600 dollars.
He compare this to how much you spent on gas 2900 dollars I mean look.
You know people's wages are not growing when you put in this kind of costs for health care.
You know it's coming out of things that you can't afford not to pay you have to pay for gas you have to -- for food what's going on with the -- -- budget.
Well unfortunately I think this is only gonna get worse all the numbers.
After people if people try to go out of their network of providers or try to go outside the prescribed coverage that those plans provide.
They gonna get salvage a very heavy coinsurance.
On that that's gonna come out of their own pockets.
We got so many promises with Obama -- right we're gonna have all these people covered.
We're gonna keep costs under control costs.
Costs under control not so much Paul what's going on.
Well look costs are going up but also obamacare is an expansion is gonna pull more people in the system we're gonna consume more health care.
And if you have more demand it's gonna drive prices up.
You've also got to push by the administration have hospital consolidation hospitals already have tremendous pricing power in the market as as they consolidate further prices are gonna rise even more well.
I hate to see that you know we took a look at where all this money is going to get that it's hospitals it's doctors.
Doctor -- an -- is -- the way it should be is this the arrangement as it should be or is there something wrong with this picture.
Well a lot of the waste.
A lot inefficiencies on the provider side and particularly in the hospitals very hard to get control of that when you.
When you have a government run system because politically.
Those hospitals exercise a lot of clout they usually the largest employer in congressional district -- it will -- local districts.
And so it's very hard for the government's doing thing to try to affect those costs that's why you want a more competitive marketplace for those cost me disciplined by consumers and large employers and other people make I -- I decisions.
I don't understand why -- can't selected may cost one price in one market.
And twice that in another Paul can you illuminate me.
Well look look when there's no try to price transparency -- the highest cost is paid by the person who's paying out of pocket the uninsured.
That's just ridiculous it's because the person -- utilizing this service whether it's the employee.
The patient the consumer when they're not bearing bearing anything like the true cost they have no attempt or no opportunity discipline assistants say is that really worth it to me.
-- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Well -- picking up on Paul's point -- he's exactly right or shop around and look for institutions that provide the best service at the lowest cause people can't even get information about.
What the best institutions -- to go for some of these procedures.
Well yeah we we took a look at the Fox News poll which.
You know people are increasingly saying I don't want Obama care.
Take this under the new health care -- you and your family will be worst top 53%.
With -- -- better -- only 26.
Is this what you hear when you talk to friends and family.
But I think the vast majority of people don't understand the -- you know thousands of pages long incredibly complex but they do instinctively understand is that costs are gonna go up.
It's getting more complex more of your Barack retires and Washington's gonna have more control of your health care and that means at the end of the day things -- going to be more confusing and more expense.
And Washington having more control of everything is always frightening doctor Scott last word.
But by a group called anonymous that when I I talk to doctors and they there they say the same things they're looking out out more paperwork and more confusion as -- -- -- implement and there is already seeing it.
-- -- -- -- -- I didn't keep Uncle Sam -- and maybe might might be the best way to go Paula doctor Gottlieb thanks for coming on tonight great to see you guys now.
