Ranking member of the committee senator hatch among precious just our computers report this morning -- former IRS commissioner -- -- in the now familiar ousted acting director.
Stephen Miller senator welcome to let's begin with -- sound bite we just heard from you when you're asking mr.
Miller why he missed let you.
Like he misled the American people in his response.
I did not live -- that you come back with what you lie by omission I mean when you at all satisfied with any of the testimony you heard this morning.
No they were just giving excuses all the way through that that hearing and what Miller -- I sent two letters we signed by a number of Republican.
Senators -- what we were very concerned about this.
And in both cases ask -- about these problems and especially.
In the IRS asking for -- -- our list which is contrary to their rules and contrary to the law and then and he just basically end.
-- he just places they sent letters back and do you have any reference to what he knew and how we news day.
IRS is not doing what was right and so that's why sentiments in -- life of me.
It is frustrating indeed but.
How does it seem like we -- getting nowhere with this investigation -- hearings as well house preparation ways and means excuse me on Friday.
And I know that you're on the record here are suggesting perhaps the administration just did not want to deal with these -- arrests targeting conservative groups until after the election.
Well that's -- and looked as though they're just deferring everything in -- just to get by the election about the same time.
They were making it very difficult for conservative view the groups to get approvals.
And they use this spike in 501 -- four.
Applications what they didn't say is that there was a larger spike in a 5165.
Applications which of the union.
Clinton supporters and they didn't do it does nothing about that in other words what they were trying to do in my opinion.
Conservative organization from being effective during the election year and try and get them over until after the election year was over and frankly.
You know they're denying that type of stuff -- my gosh what else what else could have made.
Is it your belief that the IRS had a strong influence the ultimate outcome of the 2012 presidential election.
Well let's put it this way and it.
You know and they didn't go after the George Soros type five Wednesday for -- go after all of -- Wealthy and Democrats -- one simple words when that so called spike occurred.
I just went after these.
These conservative groups and look.
We should not have the IRS going after anybody not -- it's not moderates not liberals they should be down the middle doing what's right and clearly they did not do what's right here.
So American people rightly so are intimidated by the IRS I think it's fairly okay.
In the wake of this scandal become big it's become political how do you suggest reforming it.
Well who -- who isn't afraid of the IRS I think most people are just terrified when the name comes up.
Because they're afraid that you know they could be they -- misuse the law to try and hurt them I've seen it time after time.
I think most employees at the Irish are really decent honorable people who do a good job.
But let's face it -- the -- the IRS which is one of the toughest -- unions and the business and frankly.
You know I think there was a real effort to try and sway the election and not let these other groups get their five on Wednesday -- status so that they -- They could raise money and help.
In the case of the Tea Party people that they thought were good they don't always think I was so good but but they had a right to participate you know.
Fair point so what do you think should happen I know.
Miller's been ousted our firings and not do you think perhaps he should be held mr.
Miller in contempt of congress for his statements -- -- today.
I actually don't wish anybody any harm but I I do feel that that he has been disingenuous.
And some of those answers.
You know it's a tough spot to be on -- -- it clearly did not handle it right.
The IRS didn't have a right he clearly didn't come back and where he had an obligation to come back and say look senators.
I may have misled you this is these are the facts and I didn't do that they should have done that especially since we're.
Members of the one committee that really -- -- -- IRS did you would think they'd want to cooperate with us.
Stepping back senator bigger picture obviously the CEO of apple Tim Cook is testifying as well about.
Apple's tax practice is -- Leads me to my follow up here about overall the overall need for corporate tax reform the tax code across the board is complicated -- -- this scandal.
All of this -- concern and hear the IRS right now let's.
They need and the priority tax reform in this country down to a lower point on the agenda.
Well as far as I know apple was living within the constraints of the laws that exist but it also points -- tax reform is so essential.
Look this -- monies are overseas -- -- -- that a long time -- Republicans would do because we would have come up with a Wednesday a bill that would have allowed them to repatriate those monies back here.
And this economy would be going even better but that's why come back when they'd have to pay 39%.
They can just do their business -- -- and that's what.
The corporate leaders devastated and otherwise that have been criticized by the shareholders -- may be sued so you know it's a bit better if there's ever a reason for tax reform not just corporate tax reform.
It's what's happening the way some people don't have to pay any taxes but that's.
They're living with a -- as far as I can say.
And and they had a right to do that it it's the law that's wrong not not the corporations.
And we need to change the IRS code make -- more responsible for the American people.
Make it more efficient and workable and simplified that dart -- god -- bill.
-- You know they IRS code that nobody understands.
Our top down reform at the IRS and tax policy hopefully coming our way senator Orrin hatch a pleasure.
Thank you --
