And here's another one.
One fund box in the cherry created by Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick -- Boston Mayor Tom Menino has raised twenty million dollars that's the good news for marathon victims.
But others are being created that are not so respectable.
How can he make sure your donations get into the right hands when you donate to this charity or any other.
Joining me now can Berger president and CEO of Charity Navigator -- back to the show.
So right after this event.
Domain -- created in the wake -- this bombing in the wake of this marathon disaster.
And almost all of them carry some kind of tagline about.
Am fun being held people looks -- her -- -- what's going on here.
-- ripoff artists there is bad people as well as good people that are trying to.
Get in there they know that the faster you get in there the -- you get that don't main names the more likely it is.
That someone will impulsively give because it's risk return and people want to give fast and quick that because they're hard it's going -- to the people says it.
The very dangerous tremendous -- and the very people who -- -- help end up.
Helping peoples who are scam artists instead.
Let's talk about how he would know that one of these web sites is for real or not for real what are the things I should look for.
Well that it in all kinds of ways you can look very real you can see videos you can see pictures you can see.
All of the right bells and whistles that could appear on the surface which is why there's such a risk so it's so hard.
Which is why we really advice people as much as you can either -- Go for.
One of the charities that's been known who has -- track record.
If she can't do that the second best thing is something like the one found its brand -- but it has reputable people involved Kenneth Feinberg was involved in 9/11 in the -- shootings an all these other kind of situations is being.
Involved in that so that's your second best choice if you can't find -- traditional charity.
Go that way but you got to remember if you gonna do this the money may not get.
There as fast that you're not -- -- Let's talk about new account for just a second you know as this is been astonishing.
Millions and millions of dollars raised from regular Americans all over the country in the wake of that shooting most of it has not even gone to the fan once it's really an outrageous.
Particularly horrible it's one of the worst we've seen that it be in -- I think it's quite inexcusable.
And it speaks to this tension where some of these traditional charities.
They're vetting process there's so bureaucratic there's so slow that it's pathetic which is why there -- these other efforts that they're trying to create such as the one fun.
Such as the national compassion funds that some of the victims are trying to put together it's because the traditional groups are just taking so long.
You know what's interesting is when we talk about the national compassion -- before you weren't you weren't for you didn't like the idea but now you're starting to turn on it because.
Look at the end of the day the money isn't getting where it needs to be all and I spoke to the people after the interview and it turned out that they are -- to create a charity that was under the impression it was some kind of a governmental body.
And that is.
Interesting and encouraging they also mentioned Kenneth Feinberg is somebody they want to engage in the process of -- number very encouraging signs in the way that they're thinking about doing this.
-- will be in the details.
When we see what happens when they actually launch but for now the one fund is there.
And it has reputable people involved.
And so -- good idea it's a good idea one -- quite follow up that says some of the families actually get out there and create their own charities.
Is that -- waiting out.
Well you know sometimes people claim that there.
Family members are related to the family so there's always a danger that's why we say if you live in the area and you know the people go for it that's fine.
But if you're at a distance and you're not sure somebody can falsify that.
It's much more risky -- merit so no crowd funding site avoid Google -- social media for research -- great stuff thanks for coming on appreciate your time my plan.
