Well it's been twenty hours since.
We heard about the firefight overnight in Boston.
And -- we've been following out what's been going on really in the last thirty minutes we've heard all the latest details of what happened in Boston.
How law enforcement there is continuing to look for this nineteen year old we have on hand here Mike Tobin -- been in Watertown.
All day long.
Mike tell us what the mood is -- -- now I understand that people are allowed to move around freely can you tell me.
With the scene is like I -- people feel more confident now.
Well today what we did see is a big surge of activity people seem dead to be eager to get out of their houses they've been a cooped up since this whole thing got started.
We saw a lot of people like get up get walking -- walked out of the Starbucks -- walked out of some of the local stores.
And we're very disappointed to find at the stores are open and they had to return home.
Because there's just nowhere to go but quickly people are getting out getting -- along walking the dogs things of that nature prior to that announcement.
That the shelter in place order had been lifted out Watertown had been a ghost town but for the activity of the police the order of the day.
Was to see these a police groups but national Guardsmen tactical -- state troopers -- going door to door knocking on the doors and searching these individual houses.
But now we just heard from the heads of state police and we heard from the from the governor their belief that they don't believe this nineteen year old is still in Watertown they believe he is somewhere is still in Massachusetts.
They don't believe that he has the means to travel.
But they heavily that this surge was -- they believe the search was exhaustive.
And they just didn't turn a month so they think that somehow he was able to slip the barrier that being said they only said they believe.
He was able to slip the barriers that they urged the residents out here to be vigilant as -- start going about their normal lives again.
So you see people you see all the cars back on the road they weren't they -- right just an hour ago.
People glad to get outside of their house houses -- ready to return back to normal but.
Certainly an air of tension because no one knows where this armed and dangerous -- this individual who's presumed to be armed and dangerous is located.
Well Mike I see the traffic moving behind -- -- And I saw the video today of the police going house to house.
Describe this in more detail for us -- -- actually walking -- Walk through the house is open up the closet doors go in the basement in the -- coming how thorough where they searches.
Well -- we weren't allowed to go inside the houses with -- we are just able to sneak up bottom from time to time his -- Is searching these individual houses not by -- we see them knock on the door there wasn't any kind of a forced entry in the day thing is the word had been communicated to the people.
Particularly in Watertown.
That when they see a uniformed officer they -- opened the door and let him in -- -- see these guys go on the front door.
They spent some time inside of the house and then they would come out presumably they were doing all of the things that you that you mentioned there that they were were trying to search the likely -- likely hiding spots looking in the crawl space may be looking in a closet looking and have part of the house where no one had bad.
And that's it you go through you search the house say you're doing you know a low tech search of the house and you move on to the next one thus far there's their search they believe was exhausted.
But it didn't didn't turn up this a suspect.
Are what might stay with this for just a second here I'm gonna bring -- -- we L hill -- It was used to an investigation.
Having been a former prosecutors I understand it.
It does this surprise you I've never personally have never seen anything like -- and I was shocked at the way this all unraveled and now we're finding out new news from this presser.
That they believe that this young man this nineteen year old this terrorist is still in the state still.
State and left on foot and that -- just forgotten oppressors while what's going to be critical I think for the law enforcement now working with federal prosecutors is to try to find him.
And get him alive and the reason for that series because we've been speculating all day long did these two terrorists that they work just to two -- the two of them or whether some help you know.
With all of the weaponry they have the ammunition all of that all of the planning.
It also just to look up if you look at the videotape as we all have of their cases it just -- so.
It seems it's not like a a look at -- -- the gate almost that this was kind of -- part of that plan thing they didn't just roll out of -- and do it if that's true.
Then prosecutors and law enforcement need to get as much information -- as much information as they can from him who helped you how they help you there's a way to do that what's the State Department.
About why are you plugging into a network what is that weren't even more than tackle behind you big question all -- kind of questions but could they have done this on their -- in your view because a lot of people say there's so much information on the Internet right now wind -- Possible they could have it's just that it's really would be shocking to me that they wouldn't have.
Talked about it the right about it plan with somebody else at least and where did they get they know there's there's money involved here.
And harboring they -- they -- state in the area even five days afterwards now they've blended in with the MIT Harvard community so that's part of it but that sort of idea of just sticking around and looking to see how world reporting on it and what -- what the chaos that their causing.
That it is -- it is shocking that they were terminal there do that you think they do they laid down -- they backed you know they do criminals terrorists in this case one of the facts that I thought you should comment on it was said the press conference here of some 200 rounds fired in the firefight.
That's a lot a lot around absolutely I mean the end -- it was -- -- a lot of rounds.
Everybody meant business I mean mile descent person might my son called me at at 1130 last night saying this is happening.
And so cops were out there they did their job.
-- I don't know if you've been able to.
Talk to people.
Since this ban on being on the street has been lifted.
What are people telling you -- today -- they feel safer.
It seems to me that they're just disappointed.
Yeah that is Susie got an opportunity to get out of the house and go to out of the store may -- -- refresh of the refrigerator.
Looks like a lot of mothers a Starbucks right around here try to get into the Starbucks they're disappointed -- -- -- hard -- That the owners those stores didn't necessarily come down and open up as quickly as they would like.
By and that's -- really you -- this happened so fast as soon as this.
Who it as the -- shelter in place was lifted we've turned around went back on the air and Steve like just now emerging from their homes at you know as we speak.
Well -- Mike thanks for coming out with us tonight.
Excellent reporting and just fantastic reporting from Watertown -- will thanks for coming on in getting us the prosecutor's point of view here are very helpful indeed.
We'll be right back.
