And I think that -- -- colder weather chilled consumers' appetite for spring merchandise last month as retailers struggled to lure shoppers back into the store.
But despite -- slow start we've got someone who says spring's fashion trends.
The gain momentum and she's predicting some of the season's biggest winners.
Joining us right now is Gabriella -- -- -- senior vice president -- -- but what bush securities thank you so much for joining us.
Thank you so what are we need to know here I mean I'm looking out at sixth avenue and snow's coming gotten very concerned that you know shoppers might be heading out a little bit -- this year for their stock much of their spring must.
-- Yes there's a lot of concern.
Aside from just higher gas prices and some other macro factor it's.
Weather is a big issue.
Specifically in the midwest and the northeast we've seen a slowdown in mall traffic.
And we're sprinting really what is a typical Q1 which is the weather is turning happen.
Across part of the country the rest of the countries holding out.
And then that retailers are providing light weight merchandise and so there's really -- -- now where -- now purchasing going on.
Whereas last year it was unseasonably warm.
I'm in Chicago was 81 degrees last year on Saint Patrick's Day it was definitely not 81 degrees yesterday.
Snow the consumer's right now are just really holding out and and at the end of the day they're gonna wait for the marked down.
-- what about personal income that is weight I was down three point 6% in February people have less money in their pocket how is that affecting retail sales.
Well it's effecting it I mean it's it's it's all just share of wallet and when the consumer spending on other.
Again I'm bringing up gas prices but you know you -- you have to spend on gas.
And is that consumer -- has less we don't have to -- -- -- as you can you can let your fans do the walking through the Internet I mean -- cut is is is that -- they.
Some problems -- the Internet sales as well it was adjusted the brick and mortar the -- the drive through.
Well I think it's brick and mortar I think and Internet sales.
And they and mean they've traditionally been pretty strong am I so I would say less so than what we're seeing really in brick and mortar.
Are -- but eventually spring will common people will have to go out and they replenish their wardrobes or at least update that you've got a couple names that you're looking at need.
Apparel sector with so.
In my opinion a very difficult sector to look at because they're so many ups and downs what are your favorites -- now.
Still the favorites are GAAP and express and the -- like these two retailers is that there really no discernible trends in the market right now.
Still last year coming into spring we had colored denim everybody had to have -- it was a must have items seemingly everywhere that they the color much skinny jeans -- -- -- Yes it is it -- air but -- we're about a year into it at this point sell I think it's more.
More often than not the consumers it's gonna be part of the consumers wardrobe.
So really what we're seeing is these retailers that are taking a stand and basically.
Guiding the consumer and saying.
These -- the categories you need to have so when you walk into a gap store.
Their message is very clear it's the -- gene it's the boyfriend charts it's the essential -- like these are the items you have to have.
When you walk into expressed they've taken it -- another -- and are offering fashion silhouettes so.
It's the -- and -- draft the problem top and also the work shirt so.
I like these two retailers because they really have a point of view and we you walk into that store.
These are the items that you must have for the season David -- -- -- yeah well -- I won't I won't tell you what I've worked -- -- but I do have a young daughter a teenage daughter and the problem is is that they're sold -- I mean they're stared.
There fashioned views change on a diamond.
And that's why I'm wondering if if you don't rather than going to the person tries to be on the cutting edge somebody pulling back Michael course for example you pull back and you watch.
Then they seem to be more stabilize not is not as says subject to the -- changes will be treated.
Am -- right or wrong and well.
Well -- these are also higher price points you're talking -- -- -- there is.
Does the is the average teenager really spending 348 dollars on -- -- probably -- But with winds gusting with with Michael cars and the accessories and that's that's fantastic for that is that it's not really subject to weather.
So I can -- a handbag of its snowing outside which is great and that we'll update my wardrobe.
So what we're seeing from our perspective with cores and an accessories is that.
It's all about innovation and having -- prod acted.
And also they are cultivating the jet set lifestyle which is what really resonates with consumers.
Also last year just as as -- -- something to point out is.
Course is operating -- some pretty lean inventory levels it is -- more inventory in the channel now and they have such great momentum that to you need inventory due to sales and so we've actually seen some pretty.
Strong traffic trends in the story that I got Leo Santa -- what do you mean which one of those you like.
-- not personally but I mean you see me Michael.
