All right ratings agency Moody's is giving Virginia hi I'm not for -- sweeping transportation implantable raise 3.5 billion dollars over the next five is.
This as the problem -- braces for the impact of the spending cuts in the defense budget so for more on the State's fiscal future.
I'm now joined by Virginia governor Bob McDonald and go Donald.
But governor thank you for being here you know all of all the states -- the vulnerable to the sequestration Virginia particular.
-- itself home to so much of the defense.
How has the these automatic cuts impacted you'll state so far.
Well thanks for having me on -- -- -- you know sequestration was meant to be a hammer not a policy.
Up -- expect that last eighteen months it would actually get does salt and it hasn't.
And -- the problem with that of course if you take the entitlement reform and cuts off the table and you put half of the cuts on defense.
It's just that really horrible policy -- -- what it means is a trillion dollars.
With previous cuts up plus interest rates and over ten years it's a couple 100000 jobs in Virginia and -- -- that hurts our kids and uniform that are in Afghanistan and our readiness seared Virginia so.
It's bad -- we can already see some mud downturns in the depend subcontracting industry and look -- got to take its share.
But don't like half of it on yeah that's our problem and I think going -- -- the next up 45 days were expected -- -- pretty significant number of furloughs.
Of our DOD civilian employs so the news I think we're gonna say more about a month.
So who's to blame for this mess.
Look what we do enrichment as we saw probably don't know what -- the president doesn't watch tonight as -- point blank but I will say.
I think it's been established it was the president's idea the president the commander -- you gotta be able delayed.
Governors can't make excuses we gotta get stuff done working with divided legislatures like the president's got I had it for two years.
And so I'd say.
You gotta find ways to take on entitlement spending.
And lessen the cuts -- defense.
And the president's not well to do that and outright to interject tax increases.
When sick restoration has always been about spending cuts right that's just not the right thing to -- Governor wanted to mention you're overseeing a sweeping transportation.
Plan but conservatives.
People of your own party.
So you broke a pledge and raise taxes have you respond.
But the bill is coming -- my desk I did push transportation hard this session.
I'm tired of us having our problems with job creation -- infrastructure with quality of life for families and I've proposed.
A way of getting that done the legislature make some changes to it that does involve revenue increases in Northern Virginia and Hampton roads state -- it's about to about twenty bucks.
Far -- -- per person so.
Listen there's no easy ways to get America's infrastructure rebuild I've got the most new jobs that part of the country.
-- in Northern Virginia so were making some tough decisions not everybody may be happy with about that but they'll be happy there -- getting people back to work.
-- out of traffic you know I look at what Reagan did thirty years ago or raise the gas tax.
Is that like I'm not gonna let the infrastructure -- -- -- no Ronald Reagan but I do know that that sometimes you gotta make -- tough decisions as governor and get things done they get problem solved and that's what we're -- Well we -- wish you the best of luck Virginia governor Bob McDonnell thank you so much for joining us.
