The joint terror task force right now is looking at what is being called the citing a mysterious flying object.
Near New York's JFK international airport -- -- after reports that an -- Italian pilot claimed he saw a black -- hovering.
Just 200 feet from his plane -- he approached the airport.
Mike Baker is here -- a former CIA Covert operations officer and president of diligence on global intelligence and security firm.
Good to see you might thanks for being on with us thank you from London.
What do you make of this because -- maybe you and that it will come as a surprise of people but drones are in use here in the United States just not the same raises the Defense Department uses them.
Not try to made -- into the armed drones -- developed.
To a great degree and for the commercial sector amendment and that's always been the case -- -- in video the military has benefited from.
Technological advances and a commercial sector so.
There's a lot of broad legitimate purposes for drones what you're talking about the other environmental.
Video surveys or whatever may be along with the law enforcement and homeland defense.
And I'm a big buyer on on -- in fact there's I could make money and then today's stock market is invested drone manufacturers but I think -- You know people are very spun up right now because of the idea that somehow the drone program now is going to come to the US.
And suddenly everyone's going to be surveil well.
Policy has -- a long time well working within the government and if you're not involved in terrorism are criminal activity you probably don't have much to worry about.
And and speaking of that there wasn't there are it issues about trying to -- here in the US I believe -- the mayor of Seattle.
Canceled they would on the upcoming use of tunes rounds -- -- -- -- in investigating crimes Sainz.
But don't have -- might do we need to start worrying about it more as a military budgets get caught was three billion dollar spent on drones.
By the Department of Defense every year.
That that won't be the directions these companies try to -- increasing use among universities and police departments and even more Cattrall.
Well yes and I think they've got BO very interesting applications again for.
For legitimate purposes of law enforcement homeland defense here in the US.
-- the big -- has been so far about the idea that somehow we'll use the drones to target US citizens here in America.
And I again I mean you're never gonna be are convinced some segment of society that you know that's going to indication that the government is -- to do the -- I'm -- city in the applications -- -- -- quite frankly I think you know there's there's been a lot of this up on Capitol Hill particularly with the nomination of John Brennan coming up.
Over you know certain senators and others in the on the oversight committees talking about the drone program and how dangerous it might -- -- -- comes in the US.
I know what they're doing which is they're poking.
The -- -- the -- the White House and and they disagree yes with John -- you don't take on thanks to some degree.
But I think that you -- by trying to do this in the political way they may actually be damaging.
-- program the drone program which has given us more bang for the buck frankly.
In the war on terror than just about any notes have been doing what -- And according to a new Fox News poll on the majority of those polled.
Did support the use of drones in fact at 74%.
In used overseas to kill suspected terrorist.
But -- what about if you look closer at these poll results.
The US president has the authority to use -- to kill Americans on US soil we still had almost a third of those polled this said.
Yes there OK with that do you find that shocking.
-- I did find that very unusual I wanna know who those those at 30% at 32% of the people are who wanna give the president.
You know the authority to target US citizens -- on American soil without -- checks balances oversight all those things I end because you can imagine Republicans aren't aren't checking now about to -- sure I give President Obama that authorities -- you have to assume it's.
It's President Obama see -- staunch supporters who feel they can do no wrong.
Which is that -- -- stunning bit of hypocrisy given what they would have said if you've said would you give that same authority to President Bush or Republican president.
But again I I think -- you know where we're getting we're getting a bit spun up.
And it's a bit over -- in terms of this whole idea of US citizens part of it wasn't publicity over and while locking not -- was a US citizen.
Obviously he's taken up arms against the US -- -- and and eight he was taken out by drone and and part of this problem has been wall my god it was US citizen well you know what.
He took up arms against the US CE basically renounced his citizenship we had a process in place we could have taken a citizen should way.
And then -- -- I'm not sure what we'll be so difficult about that I don't have any angst over.
That issue I do have -- still we're giving any president the authority.
To that degree of targeting its citizens US citizens here in America that's a problem.
Mike great to see you always terrific and if they want more view that you follow you on Twitter MB company man and you walk funny for.
Not aware of what thank -- a bad idea and I do my best since I have heard of regular -- -- -- might end Canada.
-- it was great to see things like who -- Martha.
