Else I wish I had accused of are we not members -- but I can't -- not quite official voting ends tomorrow at 5 PM Pacific time 8 PM eastern for Sunday night's 85 annual Academy Award.
Would nine films up for best picture who will win -- and how much is the top award actually worth who better -- -- and somebody who actually had an award winning picture.
Mandalay entertainment chairman and CEO Peter -- joining us now wonderful to see you Peter thanks for coming at I -- I want to talk about not the Academy Awards but the golden.
Globe awards jet which is usually kind of a small time affairs a warmup for the -- work.
This time it was huge.
You have debt the highest ratings.
-- and I guess six years.
You had a terrific performance by Tina Fey and Amy Poehler.
Just hysterical.
And they they nominated and and awarded a lot of films and individuals who worked -- for nominations the Academy Awards now I should mention.
That you was part of Dick Clark productions.
All the Golden Globe -- -- your very happy with the success of Golden Globe but to what extent if -- Will the Golden Globes affects the Academy Awards.
All the chatter what's happened so late in the season is on this much -- -- march when they come -- -- are planning a summer vacation.
So it's very very -- all the films really played fully they've already had -- -- the British Academy Awards the Golden Globes sag vis.
-- PGA DGA so many awards but the globes are the ones -- all the celebrities really gather at a party like atmosphere.
And.
The truth is they are pretty good predictor of -- pretty good predictor of the big awards the show is very successful because as finance -- That's the basic difference the Academy Awards show generally looks like 101000 people -- squid.
It's -- -- to a 747 the economy collapsed doesn't have the same kind of zest and a partner actor globe.
Let's go right to the heart of the matter who is really going to come out on the winning side of this I guess we could just -- we to show best picture nominations and again but it's a very crowded field now it's no longer just the five freight and and peer work -- see this going.
Who -- think really -- -- -- from.
Well from the beginning everyone -- Lincoln was the you know the odds on favorite you know Steven Spielberg all the Daniel Day-Lewis conversation.
-- as good as the awards in the earlier words came out and Argo instead of picking up steam.
Now Lincoln is that our course even though Lincoln is the biggest grossing domestic of all the pictures domestic gross that is.
It's still now are dark horse to win it will probably win -- Day-Lewis.
The best actor award in might even wind.
Spielberg the best director award because the other fellow Argo Ben Affleck wasn't even nominated in the best director category.
So that's a real anomaly in this business and so ultimately you say -- could win best picture.
And then that let Lincoln to win best director Daniel Day-Lewis -- best -- -- a lot of those moves are really in the gods but those two pictures.
-- may -- silver linings as a very very dark horse I'm not a silver ores but a dark horse maybe it's again but I think it's gonna be those three nominations and awards.
I mention a couple of films that that I know you and I'd like to but that didn't make it there -- sky fall which is that and the best James Bond movie I think since.
Since gold finger I guess you have to go back FR and Hunger Games which I thought was an extraordinarily.
-- five -- in higher -- about ten times.
That's right -- we're looking at right now.
Why did these -- not get in there.
But you know that you really write about sky fall fifty years of James Bond than they were they really did was a complete make over.
A complete do over it was you know not -- do was all -- and it -- type of actor in the performance in the and the success of the -- it was amazing that wasn't one of the nine films special 100% for showing even the direct that what I target that's correct.
Hundred games as you know one of the things -- young adult films it never gets that old adult audiences -- pick up very hard and to get them.
And that's the and the academy remember is 6000 more conservative older members and they really vote.
Gephardt there -- their pocketbook and their experience it generally doesn't go to those younger films.
And -- they also vote their studios don't they have anything really comes official winner in all of this anymore Peter it is so costly.
To distribute a film that -- several the studio names are always listed and production companies correct.
Yes that's true.
But you know the gold now the last she is is not the same as it was earlier because -- films had.
Hadn't played out they had reached -- dvd that -- pay TV windows all kinds of things like they have these films have pretty much played out.
Yes they'll be some terminal value -- some reward the best picture best director best actor internationally.
But ultimately the films that played out so it's more even more glory than gold right now at these studios like the glory and -- did just.
Did glory for their career these actors and directors want the glory for their career.
And that's important it translates some money.
But the big big dollars and -- -- used to generate by -- into the being the best picture best director best actor best actress.
Isn't the same anymore because -- films of already exercised most of via.
Financial reward.
Will we ever see Rain Man to.
No no -- less -- that lets you put in spandex.
Why that is a lot of Peter's great picture -- -- I would thank you for coming at -- at the same theater.
Thing we.
