Are paying to advertise on web sites that let users illegally download pirated copies of movies and music.

This according to a study by USC's Annenberg innovation lap and its director Jonathan Kaplan joins me now from Los Angeles.

Thanks for being with us Jonathan so do you really feel like one big brands AT&T and -- Toyota Samsung do you really feel like they're kind of complicit accomplices.

In funding digital illegal piracy.

I think -- -- they are they don't really know that well how the error.

Ads are being put on these pirate sites but I think once they begin to think about it and control how their ad agencies in the ad networks.

Disperse their ads I think this will change I mean we've we've found quite obviously -- certain brands like Ford and Coke are never on these sites.

But a lot of other brands like major.

Car brands them.

Insurance brands are all over the side.

Now it turns out the ad networks -- place ads for all these brands -- running some of that some of them brands that are frequently appearing on these digital pirate sites now.

And it turned out the ad networks are able to block the brands from running on porn sites they do it quite capable -- why is it that they aren't as good -- blocking.

Brand ads from running on pirate sites because it just don't care enough about piracy.

Well I think it's money.

I think there's a lot of money to be made in placing ads on pirate sites there over a 150000.

So there's a lot of money in it and some firms like -- -- and open next have.

Have its quit the market and stop pushing out some of these pirate sites but a lot of other firms like Yahoo!.

And propel -- ads are continuing to -- service this trip.

You know -- asked Yahoo! for comment on that I got back -- A statement saying that we take all appropriate steps and we have these user terms of say in when using our ad network have to follow them and we take it died down one -- told.

But you feel like Yahoo! hasn't done nearly as much as Google asked to respond this problem is that right.
