Gary -- has hosted his over of the top TV show for more than twenty years.

But before his career in television he served ten years as says -- -- -- in Cincinnati and eventually became the mayor.

Joining me now is talk show host and former Cincinnati mayor Jerry Springer I want to start with the fact that since you deal with all these wacky people all the time yeah.

What to do have difference between them.

It's of these but I just drives me crazy the back -- -- in -- people just spend and spend and spend they don't they don't live their lives that -- do than.

Oh you mean the politician just spend yes.

Well it's different when you talk about government and then when you talk about -- room family.

I would suggest.

When you talking about your your own -- your responsibility.

Is.

To meet your own budget.

And every once -- -- you have to borrow mean we will have critical real ordered by a home social we'll do that.

When you're talking about the government though it isn't just your family.

When you're talking about the government it isn't like the private sector because it doesn't operate on the profit -- it can't and it shouldn't write it should operate on the service motive.

So every once in awhile in fact a lot of times you have to change the rules when -- talking about the government.

If it isn't politically popular to say -- but sometimes for example I would argue.

When you're in or recession or near recession -- trying to climb out of it.

That is not the time you should cut spending.

You know in order to get the economy moving again we do need people spending because of people aren't spending businesses get in trouble they don't.

That is agenda that is the idea you and me going out by yeah.

So -- I don't use the same standard in looking at how the government operates when it and the -- stand because you hear politicians always say well -- have to live within my budget.

We you know what sometimes lets face it during -- on the depression.

We had to spend World War II to get out of the depression.

-- -- I get that might question really is do people that have a desire to serve in public office yeah.

Should there be some sort of at least remedial -- if not some sort I don't know how many of them come from a financial background if they've ever taken of a course in management of their -- of course an accounting.

And and again it goes back to -- that.

These are other people's -- -- you have almost a fiduciary responsibility to make sure that you don't abuse that.

Well we there certainly are enough advises and very professional people in the government whether to democratic administrations or Republican administration.

That are experts in finance but the reason you have the congress for example -- -- would be tough on the congress and I could do it is a Democrat that they all it is Republican congress.

But the reality of the congress is to represent.

The desires and needs of the people.

And some people that they represent have tremendous needs that you can't financially justified but in terms of morality and survive.

-- suggesting that the liberal when you -- and exactly under -- -- -- -- and -- back -- but at the same time but it's a good decent way to live it's it's decent it's moral but at the same time do you do more harm.

Because of the fact that now we're in a pickle global point where we don't have money for basic government services and Rahm Emanuel Chicago's a perfect example of a -- say I can't do the other things that might citizens need because -- of pensions are gonna provide let me just.

One example that one example that.

The health insurance fight we've had.

Before we had obamacare.

Thirty.

To forty million Americans -- without health insurer right.

So -- start the discussion by saying.

We couldn't argue discussed try to figure out.

How to make it economically feasible bought the starting line is number one we made sure all Americans have health insurance that that's the first debt.

Was Hillary's point well god bless her but Michigan win and second -- is if you look at all the obamacare but it's the right thing doesn't solve the fact that we're still gonna have twenty million people at least without health insurance which I'd just go.

Why not think it's a gap and lead the rest of -- -- -- The cause we are community.

If a bomb goes off in a quarter of America killing millions of Americans.

We would spend what ever what's necessary yes right yes but when.

99.9.

Percent -- boss will leave this earth because of the disease or an accident.

So we know that killed -- ultimately of all of us is going to be some health related issue.

Therefore.

Why don't we use the same thinking to save my gosh the first thing we have to do.

The first responsibility as an American.

I just to make sure that Americans are safest possible from disease will figure out how to pay for next but for if your child is sick.

You don't go -- negotiate with the doctor and I went before you deal would march.

I'm doing how much are you gonna that are doing it I don't -- that are driving that in the UK so.

And you know what.

People in your live longer than people here in America that life expectancy is longer we keep picking on northeast of the -- that I know what I've been they'd they'd they -- they say but guess what.

We can't pay for that so go ahead and divest that fit that that's an equivalent net look at that's that's what I don't allow Americans that's healthy drug debt and debt pay for I can afford it and you can afford and and most of his -- most of his -- it's might might -- -- -- -- fix the gap we don't disagree on that and and don't throw the baby out with the bath water but.

Before we go Lotta time.

So how did you get from being a politician to been.

The TV host of drinking now.

But the real answer is for ten years I was a city councilman and mayor of Cincinnati.

And then NBC.

Hired me the NBC affiliate in Cincinnati hired me they said the day you stop being mayor.

Follow we will hire you to -- around news so for ten years I was news anchor and commentator on the NBC affiliate in Cincinnati.

Then we were pretty dominant in the ratings over those ten years.

And the company that don't -- also won't talk shows they don't Phil Donahue Sally -- -- etc.

in fact they they don't rush limbo for a walk.

And so.

They took me to lunch one day and take you pretty dominant in the ratings still -- he's been close to retirement was starting a new term talk -- you can hosted I was trying to what I didn't know addition I didn't try out.

I was assigned as an employee to do we talked.

-- and then the talk show you you have it which you like better.

But -- mayor was best governor -- I enjoy what I do yeah I enjoyed being in it why why are you what -- -- special -- in a manner.

Because it's it's next to being president it's the most significant political job you can have.

Because you -- touching people's lives every single day whatever -- -- executive you get you are right there it was so for filling.

And I felt like I was doing something important -- what they do we silly it's on people like it obviously -- what that would stay on the -- but.

It's not as important as being -- Jerry Springer nice to meet -- -- -- -- to have governance thank you.
