-- working the system and buying fuel efficient -- to avoid paying higher gas taxes think again.
Lawmakers in two states that will be Oregon and Virginia they want to implement a ton mile tax for fuel efficient car fuel market for everybody actually.
Making drivers -- -- for driving -- And in California.
The Toyota Prius hybrid was the best selling call last year could upon mile tax on the on the table for -- formally golden states and elsewhere.
Joining us now is Lauren fix from the -- -- -- let's bring everybody up to speed yet.
If you have -- ton mile tax you taxing driving as opposed to taxing gas consumption.
So -- taxes from gas sales go down because of fuel efficient -- tax revenues need to go off.
And we do that by taxing ton -- I know this is a serious proposal do you think we're gonna see -- nationally -- I hope not I I mean that's always a likable but EV cars and hybrid cars -- figured.
I'm gonna bypass the gas tax I don't have to go to the -- very often -- plug in the line in some cities and some states are even offering.
Free ability to plug in your electric car.
But as they say nothing in life is free not even love you will be paying -- they're gonna inhale the EV guy is by the by now.
You can't -- -- you do what you're supposed to do I mean you know you're a good person you're buying fuel efficient vehicles you buying electric -- buying hybrids.
And you pay a lot of money form a new saving money on the gas tax but they get -- common and going you can't win Kenya.
No I actually happens is this makes common sense.
You go to the pump you fill up.
And that for example Virginia they're charging seventeen and a half cents and sales tax on top and that toppled the gasoline use that for roads and repairs and bridges.
So what happens if you got more fuel efficient -- are up 6%.
For 2012.
That means and and with the cafe standard being 54 point five they're gonna have even -- tax money coming in so you have two choices either tax by the mile.
Or you increase your sales taxes and use that money and supposedly they really do.
To repair bridges and roads.
Now a lot of people civil I don't even own a car -- live in New York are live in Washington.
While you still use public transportation and you still want safe roads and if that's the case and that money has the still come from someplace in is gonna come from you the driver and that they don't get you one way they may get you both ways they may still checks you in gas -- charge every.
And -- -- -- -- -- the point is that you you might think -- upon mile charge replaces the gas that's not so you will end up paying votes right now at the moment is the proposal that you only paid upon mile charge on fuel efficient cars like the Prius and everybody else pays a tax on gasoline is that how it's gonna work.
Well that's how organ first brought it up to that July that it possibly be a bill but you know I think when you think about it what's gonna happen -- Colin we've discussed this before.
What's gonna happen if they -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- -- Who's to say that -- gonna start auditing that as well.
So you have to decide where the line in the sand is that they start monitoring this or they're gonna start putting in some sort of monitoring all the vehicles like they've talked about doing.
That mean they know a lot about you when your driving and they can start taxing you for other things as well -- Give me your opinion.
-- in my opinion is that sooner or later they will be tracking you with some common device that says how many miles you've driven you do you think is gonna happen.
Yeah yeah I think so the black boxes are -- and -- has already put up the black box.
Law they wanna have a -- 2014 I told everyone if you don't like it please tell your elected officials not to vote -- to fight this because it's not.
Every single card it's being produced today.
With -- exception to the German cars will hang out black boxes on them and they will get to know anything they want to know right now think they -- seventeen points of information.
-- -- you'll start getting a ticket in the mail you drove too fast weakening the police officers -- that we decided you know what story you're driving too fast to work out valued at 10 o'clock up.
I can see it coming a mile long -- I really can't get I know you were libertarian -- you.
Who may I know I tend to be more on the conservative side especially when it comes to business I'm with the -- wife Lauren fix what a pleasure thank -- much for joining us coming and -- -- Fine thank you thanks for having me.
