A big surprise today in Washington senator Jim -- of South Carolina announcing he will resign -- senate -- in January.

To take over the leadership of the think tank the conservative think tank The Heritage Foundation.

Earlier this week the senator criticized speaker bangers fiscal -- proposal saying quote would destroy American jobs and not reduce our debt a panic.

Joining me to talk about the senator's resignation his outlook on the fiscal -- And a host of other issues I'm delighted to be joined by South Carolina lawmaker congressman -- -- -- Congressman great to have you with us let me begin.

With a -- -- Because as I was discussing Steven Hayes and with our partners our senator -- I haven't heard a single Republican.

You know that's going be the cause of the fiscal -- not.

The fact that we didn't yield -- that ultimatum.

Why in the world are Republicans talking about the president's ultimatum.

Is the cause.

Well Lou I think that there are a -- Jim Jordan -- Jim -- who you referenced earlier we don't have his pick a megaphone -- -- have his bigger bully pulpit.

There's a band of of conservatives in the house many of many of us opposed to -- so called debt deal last summer.

My but you know the put the president.

Can command media -- -- -- and and whatever he does becomes news in order.

A 435.

A little voices and and frankly the Republican conference is not always seeing an -- the same sheet of music.

It is stunning to me that we're going to go over a you've -- fiscal clue -- slope.

Because of eight and a half days of revenue but at and that -- that's what the president is asking for eight and a half days -- the borrowing.

The other thing to look at though -- up think -- is you know.

That the president wants more revenue he gets that by going over the cliff.

He wants less defense spending -- get step by going over the -- -- he wants the Republican Party brand damage which he gets by going over the -- so what incentive does he have to sit down with John Boehner and negotiate.

Not all my question is why in the world it is is the Republican Party suddenly.

Throwing over or reaganomics.

Basic tenants of the party that is free enterprise -- individual freedom.

Smaller government.

You know and lower taxes.

Over this for you kidding me.

The Republican leadership -- also incentivized justice who just as well as the president as you know congressman.

They're gonna get twice I -- it twice they're going to get actual spending cuts.

-- if sequestration.

-- goes into effect.

You're going to see obviously domestic and defense budgets are cut.

But you're also going to see.

Tax increase here that will be -- But the fact is -- -- get nothing if you don't do.

The fiscal -- Well among my many limitations lose an inability to read other people's -- so I don't know what speaker byters thinking I do know what he tells -- conference and I know what he tells us.

Privately and 101 you can -- freely here.

Well -- it is speaker -- -- genuinely believe -- has convinced me that he is negotiating with himself.

Now so so he's on the spot between -- and and let's be clear John Boehner never voted for tax increase and his entire career in the house.

So -- he's got his principles all the other hand.

We -- all in November we weren't very successful when it comes to electioneering.

We're going to be blamed I think he wants to at least create -- -- -- willingness to sit down and talk.

In a broad way about entitlement reform and bending the spending -- But but what the president who won even engaging it's either give me my might increase in taxes -- all those dreaded rich people.

Or we're not gonna talk of and it and then he sent an unlimited credit -- with respect to the debt ceiling and -- can you imagine anything more absurd.

They -- hiding him and unlimited ability to raise the debt ceiling but he's got -- Unmitigated temerity to ask -- that.

Congressman I gotta -- yeah -- I got the most profound respect for.

But you've got me almost in tears thinking about those 435.

Folks there on Capitol Hill in the house.

Who have there's little tiny in megaphones and can't really get their message out.

But then I start desperately looking for that message and I I can't even find it.

Is I eagerly seek it.

And in the -- -- speaker of the house with his inability to rise to the -- the bully pulpit.

The fact is I don't see the creativity the the energy the the passion for the philosophy of the Republican Party that would engender a leadership a powerful leadership response.

To a direct challenge to the fundamental values and tenants of the Republican Party and I ask you if you don't respond now.

Women in the world -- the Republican Party response.

Well I'll let you an enormous secret Lou because all like cute between offs.

And also late this is how are you short time -- it -- Is that we are struggling -- go to hell -- this news.

No sir I would never never tell you that who we had a plan that -- many conservatives in the house had worked on and we were going to.

Our unveil it last week -- -- unveil it on an exact same -- to speaker Boehner -- unveiled his response.

So we can't it.

But there is a group of of conservatives led by Jim Jordan who's an extraordinary person -- Ohio and others -- we do have a plan -- -- eerily reminiscent of cut cap and balance which I hasten to add would have reverted.

The so called super committee it -- averted.

What we're talking about today -- have bipartisan support.

If we could get our house leadership took to reinvest in cut cap and ballots which was our plan last summer of but there's something about Washington that if it's not a new idea is not a good -- -- sure there's a reluctance to go back.

To an old plant but.

Well did have something we were gonna roll out this week and I would hope the -- would roll it out next week.

All right what portrait we appreciate your reluctance and on that.

And it's always -- -- really.

But -- -- -- but I appreciate that and then in -- you know that's always our obligation here that we maintain.

Yes -- senator Jim dement shocking everybody.

Are you interested in whatever vacancy might result.

A major student and governor Haley picking the very -- person she can put she can pick -- and I'm happy to give her.

For really good names off the top of my head Tim Scott -- more variety Jeff Duncan knew Joseph Wilson would be extraordinary.

It she's got -- -- much better political minds and and and better wisdom that I could afford her -- I I'm I'm really high all the Gaza serve worth.

In the house is going to be very tough to replace Jim -- No matter who she picks but Tim Scott would be extraordinary Mick -- old lady would be extraordinary.

And I -- would be well served with either one of them.
