-- it is.
All right so -- this city of Detroit days are numbered my next guest certainly thinks -- joining me today is Michigan State senator Rick Jones with his ideas on solving -- for its financial woes.
What which may -- to bring the city to an end altogether.
Just give our audience backgrounds to Detroit you know obviously having very serious financial problems can't meet any of their obligations that are depending on funds from the state.
The most recently because that they were supposed to.
Approve a contract with the law firm to help the financially reorganized.
And they rejected that so where do you think that leads that -- them.
Well certainly that leaves them on the brink of bankruptcy.
And so what we're asking them to do is start working with the governor state of Michigan save the city of Detroit.
-- -- they go through a federal bankruptcy will be horrible the vultures will come -- and they will pick up the jewels of Detroit Cobo hall bell I'll.
Even Detroit is to -- -- could be in danger under federal judge.
Why think I mean they had to agree in these are -- the miles so there's a series of milestones that they have to hit.
In order to get this money released from the state they were supposed to.
Get this contract in order and start moving in this direction order to get the ten million dollars released.
They knew they weren't getting the money and it is just like Greece in the -- right you know there.
They're supposed to get aired ads are the European Union they're supposed to be getting this money but then they don't do what's required in order to get it dot what does that tell you.
While I can say this is total dysfunction on the part of the City Council they refuse to work -- -- mayor they refuse to work with the governor the mayor tried to call overhead.
Mrs.
sorry we're on holidays.
So as a city is imperil their on -- holiday.
-- this is time for them to come to the table.
It's a lot what I've suggested if they don't go to the table we need to look at all the options.
Could want option -- dissolving the city of Detroit.
What is their response to practical point of view on the what would it really mean to dissolve the city would meet with the mayor be out of a job and then would you just take over their finances -- You know -- means a -- go away what would happen.
If you dissolve the city -- right it would become part of Wayne county.
The sheriff would take over the police services and an economy would take over the services just like they would in any other.
A part of the county your or the townships.
-- do they have the political will to be tighter with their financial budget what would it mean for contracts what would it mean for the bills that are getting paid.
Well obviously.
If they were dissolved those would have been -- in another fashion.
If they go through federal bankruptcy.
This would be horrible for all the employees all the retirees.
And the people of -- right.
Bankruptcy is not the best option for so it's time for this City Council to stop the dysfunction.
Get to the -- work -- -- mayor and work with the governor state of Michigan to fix Detroit before it's too late.
Why bankruptcies worse option I mean maybe that's exactly what the doctor ordered maybe it frees them not to actually take a hard look at the obligations.
That they committed to pay but -- simply can't because the tax revenue is not there.
Well you know -- trade has -- point 5% of their population over the last decade before the census.
You know a person left every 22 minutes -- yet the city council's.
Did not make the cuts they're spending like there is no tomorrow.
Is bankruptcy an option yes it's probably the last worst option.
Because bankruptcy.
On the vultures come in they pick over the jewels of the city and -- -- what's left -- there would be very unfortunate for all the people.
I gas I -- -- -- the -- save vultures at -- might be economic progress senator thank you so much for coming out we appreciate your time.
Thank you.
