We have the president US operations Myron gray joining us -- Myron good good morning good morning thanks for having me we even trying to talk to you for -- -- and super storm sandy came.
And it always just amassed so they -- so much for.
For doing this today and giving us an outlook on the holiday season and what it means for UPS sell.
Half a billion plus packages between Thanksgiving and Christmas -- deliver -- Yes this thing -- exciting time for us we expect that holiday shipping will be up as much as 10% particularly after Thanksgiving and leaning up to Christmas.
So -- we look at as a happy it's time of the year.
Does that mean the economy's doing okay -- It means that the economy is moving forward.
We still don't see an uptick and we don't see a softening either so we think that the average American consumer will still seek to.
Have -- warm holiday.
Shipping pattern.
We're expecting -- the most like apple products they knew what had to.
-- a hot companies say that are giving you good business right now.
Well let me lead with we think that the -- shipping items will certainly be electronics for the -- tablets or mobile phones or.
Leap -- for the kid again unpopular group think that'll be exciting but.
Each job be.
Mobile app makers and mobile companies have a hot new product out so it's really hard to predict which one will be the leading.
-- -- Right right and and noticed certain trends thus far.
In terms of what tight -- shipping people are going for expedited shipping priority shipping what's that -- seeing the most change.
We really haven't seen a big change as of yet.
But we're prepared to react to whatever motor shipping that the consumer elects.
We certainly expect to see a -- number of purchasers own line as many as 147.
Million on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

Well that might start on Thanksgiving oriented you know -- says.
-- this is silly survey -- and that's out.
That says that 5:23.
PM exactly we're -- -- -- Buiter mobile devices and start shopping.
So you gotta let us know if you start to notice orders being placed for things to be sits on Thanksgiving because nothing is sacred anymore who.
Well I think just after the holiday -- and football consumers -- will quickly turned to shopping yes exactly.
Instead December 20 -- -- busy instead.
December 20 it would be our busiest day we expect the ship over 28 million packages around the world.
That'll be the highest ever for UPS and that equates to about 300 packages per second.
It's amazing.
How you can handle that so you wanna tell us how -- you are able to handle that sort of audience.
-- UPS gets ready for peak season.
Just after the last.
Peak holiday every year so in January -- we start.
Prepare for what we believe is our Super Bowl.
And so we've we've been getting ready all of all year.
And as a reminder UPS invest more than a billion dollars in technology.
Every year so technology is a great enabler bid that allows us to be more productive and efficient.
And it also.
Enhances the customer experience allowing us to debut products like UPS my choice.
Which puts the delivery time and date and location and the hands the consumer.
And consumers can receive a text or an email alert to the day of delivery -- the time.
We're leaving give you -- four hour delivery window when you can expect to receive your package.
Yet we have the -- choice website on our screen -- talking about this.
And we say that you really start planning this a year ahead of time you're serious tech and years technology isn't -- some of the routes that your drivers take.
To ensure that they get there using the least gas hit the fewest traffic lights and just make everything efficient right well absolutely gonna talk but that for a little bit like no left turns -- but what's your ruling generals on.
Right well.
The drivers utilize a device called a delivery information acquisition desire device or short -- -- yet.
And they receive constant communication throughout the day to alert them to.
When a scheduled delivery is do you all when a premium package should be delivered.
Or when a customer who is a UPS my choice customer is expecting -- delivery.
Either through a two hour window oil for our time frame and using the most.
Equitable means to get it -- -- driving the less miles using the -- Left hand terms to be more efficient and use less -- -- to make the delivered.
I know we we think -- UPS you know we always say on Wall Street it's a Bellwether for the economy because it is it's it's a huge company that encompasses so many different.
-- hear an airline.
You buy fuel you you -- operate on so many different levels and you're also a huge job creator so that takes us to how many seasonal workers are you hiring day and any plans to keep an -- full time.
Yeah we expect to hire as many as 55000.
Seasonal workers.
As a matter fact I started as -- seasonal worker over 34 years ago so some of those jobs to do and can translate into full time jobs.
Pet and then out full time very successful pilot has since late -- says it's a great story -- like that and OK and that hope you know everyone's talking right now well I guess -- have to be living under -- -- if you haven't heard the words fiscal cliff may be -- become.
-- -- Pending budget cuts and tax hikes and this kind of stagnation we're feeling right now as we try to round -- the year how is that affecting -- your business performance three business discussion.
-- I think that the best indicator of fiscal cliff is.
Certainly impacting -- how our our customers are making decisions we work would -- him nine million customers on a daily basis.
And they certainly are telling us that -- a reluctance on their part to invest.
Or to -- -- -- workers.
Because of the looming fiscal cliff.
However we believe.
That congress can come -- son reasonable.
Decision sometime soon and we certainly expect that to occur.
-- -- agree with you for -- today the downside rallying one less person tends to -- finally have a nice day on Wall Street.
Superstar I'm sandy kinda came at a really an opportune time for several reasons and I know that you -- into business for several days in certain areas particularly here in the tristate region.
-- I -- because -- -- Can you describe any hit that took on your your business.
Well I think it's too early.
To really understand the total impact -- and certainly thankful for the UPS employees who in many cases were.
Back out in the neighborhood is owned the day after the storm's impact.
Certainly -- heart goes out to those families who've been impacted.
But we're back up and running 100% grade I think it's too early to tell.
Yes most definitely and -- Lotta people -- -- especially the men out there who start their holiday shopping really late.
What's the -- date that you can send something to arrive by Christmas you.
Well for those who don't -- up into the exact last minute we'd like to have their packages by the nineteenth of December if they're gonna use normal ground services.
But they can wait isn't laid as the 23 to get them done -- For that that's point in -- many people all of the people I don't wait until it's my they're my husband included but I hope not but then how much of that package costs to ship.
Domestically.
If you're waiting -- -- point they're.
It depends on the size and weight and the distance that it has to travel.
All right lots of variables but I'm sure you've been paying and I Santa -- premium on that right absolute -- at their last minute that's this is what happened -- Well -- -- services are air services are certainly the required of charge over a normal ground delivers services yes.
