Getting thank you called.
Drive Walt Mossberg all over the latest in technology as usual and he spent the last few weeks reviewing this new tablet the Microsoft surface we wanna know it is it cool -- all the -- murky is here -- this week all things digital personal technology columnist for the Wall Street Journal.
Microsoft needs a little cold -- the -- -- -- needs to be in the conversation guys.
You know.
That they obviously hate they make that the platform that most the world's PCs run -- and yet.
They've been out of the conversation for 567.
Years because.
They've done virtually nothing in mobile phones they're trying and but they've done nothing and -- had no tablet.
Operating system so what they did was take take a page out of their archrivals.
Playbook -- And they decided to do an -- -- thing where they made that they designed the hardware they built the fact treating made this tablet.
They can put this new operating system on -- they wrote apps for it.
They have an ecosystem for -- and it's it's historical -- its the first computer of any kind.
Made by Microsoft.
We're gonna and that's that is historic when you think about it is this -- start evidence for and I wonder and also but more importantly for this conversation.
Did they get it right.
Yet they got it they got it right and they didn't get it right.
-- and here's what I mean I think on the hardware which is the thing you would expect them to have the most trouble with because.
Other than Xbox which is a big success.
They have not made you know a major piece of hardware I think this is a good piece of hardware it's again taking a page out of Apple's playbook.
It's it's it's a very -- It's it's metal it's very good good looking it's.
Carefully designed it has -- -- stand on the back that's.
That's solid and then.
It has.
Just a generally good feel to it.
The problem here is that it runs on -- version of windows eight which cannot run all year old windows programs.
And it.
It.
Doesn't have many of the new style tablet apps.
That the system was built support they're only gonna have.
101000 globally when they launch on Friday of which only 5000 of the available in the US.
An apple has over 700000.
Of which almost 300000 are specifically designed for tablets so.
There's a big huge gap there.
What is it appealed to look at it at least on the price it based prices what close to 500 dollars for and I not -- you get compared to the I've -- double the amount of storage.
He did he get W manage storage.
It's -- AJ you know I think it's.
It's -- Their their their marketing is probably going to be around productivity.
And now.
I do not buy the idea that you can't be productive on an iPad I'm productive and an iPad all the time -- one thing you can't do and I -- to run.
Microsoft Word PowerPoint and excel the other full versions there's no version of them.
There are similar -- but there's no Microsoft Office stuff on anybody else's tablet they have rigged up a version of Microsoft Office.
That runs on the surface.
And that's a plus and to go long -- that they've made these covers that are very -- and cleverly designed to have keyboards built into them we've seen these for the iPad and and some of the android tablets from third parties but Microsoft really.
Took great pains to make these thin light and so when you combine the fact the have a keyboard you -- by which is optional.
And you have Microsoft Office most of -- not outlook but the other ones that are included.
Then I think they're gonna have a message that you can get.
Sort of office type work done on the surface.
Normal you know out there it is -- front of the surface.
Replay options now and a tablet language I know I've had gotten I've had many good gracious alive.
Good thing right that's that's that's my next that's my next thing I'm a look at whom entities so -- our own -- about that.
Now look I guess of -- as always thanks a lot.
While it is great -- -- eight he had lied.
