Right now I expect here thank guests like five let's go do that apple and Google and -- you know no.
Maps -- Google Maps in the latest iPhone and iPad it's been just a mess.
And a Walt Mossberg says really could give android phones to major damage -- been looking for.
Joining us now from Washington DC in this week's all things did you all -- Walt Mossberg personal technology columnist at the Wall Street Journal -- You reviewed to Google Maps her arm android finds just -- make -- how good are the -- Well they're very good they're not perfect day in.
Although Google's working on this for seven years -- have a lot more data and more accuracy then the new fledgling apple maps.
I did find in my tests at least.
-- a couple of inaccuracies including.
A Google advising me to make an illegal left -- which they're now fixing in their database but overall.
It's a very rich.
Feature filled.
And useful app on android.
-- -- said the so ready to just be clear this is the app for android the Google Maps right for -- not the one that you use on the iPhone and apparently they're coming out the new one there.
As well I guess the big question for people -- the iPhone are thinking about it is this enough.
-- it has been a mess hall acknowledge that for for apple.
This apple others you know new mapping service -- -- up to what Google puts forward but this is is this enough to choose a different phone -- android over iPhone.
I don't think so overall at least not for most people maps are important.
But.
The truth is despite all the mess and all apology from apple.
The Apple Mac maps in most cases all really all cases that I've tried.
Do you find the location accurately I'm well aware that not everyone is -- that experience there are lots of examples on the web.
But -- at the map all the via collapse don't worked at all.
The thing is if you use maps a lot if -- on the road and you using these -- for navigation and and for whatever other reason you you just.
It's just a heavy part of your phone usage then yeah I think I think it would make a difference to your choice of phones.
It would be that may be -- the tipping factor but I still overall.
Think there's took a ton of things going for for the iPhone does not to excuse apple here.
-- Walt Disney sense of how Long Will it take apple potentially to.
Wound up markedly and pray of those maps to I don't okay how all -- -- catch up to Google but I don't.
Well noticed catching up to Google and and date and that's a fabulous.
Question.
As many are questions are.
He here's here's the thing -- keep in mind there are really two issues here.
One -- features and richness.
And you know that kind of stuff and the other is accuracy.
Basic accuracy which involves having.
The databases hooked into the maps for apple -- licensed a very respectable big giant worldwide database from TomTom.
But there's something about the way.
Either they've not hooked it up bright or.
You know there are certain and certain.
Places in the world -- even a big database like that needs help from additional licenses so -- got to really work.
Fast and hard on making sure it's at least -- Our terms of features.
Like you know the Google Maps -- look inside Macy's and tell you where that apartments are.
They can give you the names of two -- on -- college campus that's gonna take apple some time I mean Apple's obviously got.
Money and talent and they can do that but the but maps are hard and they take time so I think they'll probably get the accuracy.
Mostly fixed.
It in a shorter periods of time if -- were apple that's what I'd be focused on.
The features will come along.
Probably a little behind that.
Are pretty good stuff second guessed Walt Mossberg F following John Allison to identify question from data is a good question just this hour.
I don't know parole -- that's pretty from wall that's a big town at this time a big cap thank you walk.
